Nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. A FE-SEM image of the nickel hexacyanoferrate showed that it consists of nearly spherical particles with sizes ranging from 30 to 70 nm. The synthesized material was found to be a heterogeneous catalyst useful for the solvent-free oxidation of benzyl alcohol with H2O2 as an oxidant. A 36% conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde was achieved under optimized reaction conditions using specific parameters such as the amount of catalyst, the temperature, the benzyl alcohol to H2O2 molar ratio, and the reaction time.

Uptake and distribution of 14C-labeled Fosthiazate in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumL.)

The uptake of 14C-labeled fosthiazate (0.75 mg.L–1) by tomato plants was studied in solution culture both in the presence or absence of 2, 4 dinitrophenol (DNP, 1 × 10–2 mM), a metabolic inhibitor. Fosthiazate was rapidly taken up by tomato plants and nearly one third of the finally absorbed quantity was taken up in the first half an hour. The translocation of fosthiazate to the shoot part was under metabolic control during the initial stage of uptake. The kinetics of uptake both in the presence and absence of DNP conformed well to the dual phase than a single phase. In the presence of DNP, the uptake capacity (Vmax1) for the initial phase suffered, approximately three fold reduction in comparison to the absence of DNP while Vmax2 for the latter phase was statistically similar to the value observed in the absence of DNP signifying the metabolic dependence of the initial uptake phase. Autoradiography indicated that fosthiazate in the tomato plants tends to accumulate in the roots and at the root-shoot junction. In shoot, it is accumulated in the older leaves especially, near the leaf tip and margins.

Refractometric Studies on Molecular Interactions in Six Binary Liquid Mixtures

Refractive indices of the six binary mixtures between N-Butyl bromide with Aniline, Benzene, Xylene, Carbon tetrachloride, n-Heptane and Toluene for the entire concentration range have been measured at 303.15 K. Furthermore, deviation in refractive indices from ideal mixture, molar refraction, deviation in molar refraction from ideal values for these mixtures has also been evaluated. The results are discussed in term of molecular interactions between the components of the binary mixtures.

Multi Drug Resistance Bacterial Isolates of Surgical Site Infection

Multi drug resistance microorganism is considered to be one of the major health problems. The aim of this study was to determine antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacterial pathogens of surgical site infection. A total 250 samples were included, out of which 62.4% showed significant bacterial growth. Gram negative bacteria were 85.25% and gram positive bacteria were 14.75%;among them 65.38% of the total isolates were multi drug resistance (MDR). The age group between 31 - 40 found the highest number of isolates 22.4%. Among gram negative bacilli, the highest production of MDR was found in Acinetobacter spp. followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. In gram positive cocci, the highest production of MDR was found in Staphylococcus aureus. Acinetobacter spp. was found highly susceptible to amikacin and gentamycin 20.1% followed by ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin 18.6% and 16.2% respectively. Staphylococcus aureus showed 100% sensitive to clindamycin whereas penicillin showed 100% resistance followed by amoxycillin (93.75%). Amikacine and clindamycin were drugs of choice for gram negative and gram positive bacteria respectively. This study showed that alarming increase of infections was caused by multi drug resistance bacterial organisms. It increases length of stay and may produce lasting sequelae and requires extra resources for investigations, management and nursing care. Surveillance of surgical site infection is a useful tool to demonstrate the magnitude of the problem and find out appropriate preventive methods.

Our work aims to evaluate a complete outlook of virgin high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) polyblends. Virgin PP of 20, 30 and 50 weight% is compounded with virgin HDPE. The properties like tensile strength, flexural strength, Izod impact strength are examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and polarised light microscopy (PLM) are used to observe the surface and crystal morphology. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests verify the non compatibility of both polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques are used to study the thermal behaviour of composites. The results manifest co-occurring spherulites for polyblends;indicating the composite to be a physical blend of continuous and dispersed phases, but on the other hand PP improves the tensile and flexural properties of HDPE.

BAX G(-248)A Gene Polymorphism and Its Association with Risk of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer—A Case Control Study

Pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein BAX is an important member of mitochondrial dependent apoptosis regulation and ultimately plays a pivotal role in malignancies. A promoter G(-248)A polymorphism in the TP53 binding region of BAX results in differential binding capacity of TP53 protein there by regulating its expression, which has been found to be associated with different clinical outcomes in various malignancies. Presently we aimed to analyze the possible impact of the BAX G(-248)A polymorphism on the risk and other clinical features of non-small cell lung cancer in Indian population. The BAX promoter polymorphism was analyzed in blood samples of 320 subjects with 1:1 case/control ratio by primer-introduced restriction analysis PCR and survival curves were plotted using Kaplan-Meier analysis. It was observed that more than 3-fold increased risk of developing non-small cell lung cancer was associated with homozygous AA genotype of BAX G(-248)A promoter polymorphism in Indian population, with more predominant in smokers with pack-year > 45 (heavy) and using cigarette or huka as their smoking source than homozygous GG genotype. Significant associations was observed between TNM stage (p = 0.037) and histological type (0.02), of non-small cell lung cancer patients with the polymorphism. Patients homozygous for A allele exhibited a significant poor overall survival compared with patients displaying GA + AA or GA or GG genotype [median survival 6.0 vs 9.0, 11.0, and 30.0 months, respectively (p < 0.0001)]. Adenocarcinoma and advanced stage patients with AA genotype showed lower median survival time than squamous cell carcinoma and early stage non-small cell lung cancer patients (median 3.0 and 5.0 vs 8.0 and 9.0 months, respectively). Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a leading cause of seizures and epilepsy worldwide. Its clinical manifestations are varied, non specific and pleomorphic, depending on multiple factors. Since NCC mimic large number of neurological disorders, it is important that clinicians should be familiar with these rare presentations to avoid delay in diagnosis and management. We herein describe an unusual case of multiple NCC’s involving entire cortex with only cognitive and behavioural manifestations and review pertinent literature.

From the evolution of the mankind, Turmeric has been used in conventional medication. India is in lead for producing, marketing and exporting the Turmeric and its value added products. Curcuma longa (Turmeric) is an Indian rhizomatous medicinal herb from the Zingiberaceae family that is common and widely available across the globe. The components of Turmeric are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin and these are collectively known as curcuminoids. Curcumin, the active ingredient of Turmeric is generally investigated by the scientific community for its wide range of antioxidant activity, anti-Inflammatory properties and anti-cancer activity, anti-metabolic syndrome activities, neuroprotective activity, antimicrobial effects, anti-arthritis effects, anti-viral effects, anti-asthma and anti-diabetic effects, anti-obesity, cardio and liver toxicity protection activity, anti-depression and anxiety activities. Turmeric has been widely used as a typical household treatment for cough, sore throat, respiratory ailments and could be an effective immunity booster against SARS-CoV-2 therapy during the ongoing pandemic situation. Safety evaluation studies indicate that both turmeric and curcumin are well tolerated at a very high dose without any toxic effects. Thus, turmeric and its constituents have the potential for the development of modern medicine for the treatment of various diseases. So in this review, we describe the various metabolic roles of curcumin and activities for the benefit of human health.

A comparative evaluation of dentin caries removal with polymer bur and conventional burs—An in vitrostudy

Aim: To evaluate the comparative efficacy of Polymer bur (Smartprep) and Conventional burs (Carbide bur & Diamond Points) in selective Dentin caries removal. Materials and method: 15 freshly extracted carious human premolars and molars were selected for this study. These teeth were split in the center of carious lesion, in order to obtain two corresponding half. Thus 30 samples were prepared in this way. These were randomly divided in to 3 groups of 10 samples each. Group 1: The carious portion of these samples was excavated with the help of polymer bur Smartprep (SS White). Group 3: Prepared with Tungsten carbide round bur (No. 018). Group 3: Prepared with the help of Diamond points (No. 018). The period of time involved in this process is measured. After excavation of all carious lesions, a longitudinal section from mid most part of lesion was obtain with the help of diamond disc at slow speed. After staining with caries detector dye “Seek”, the sections were subjected to histological evaluation under stereomicro-scope. The thickness of remaining caries is measured in more or less than 1 mm. Results: The difference in grading of remaining carious dentin between Polymer bur and Conventional burs were statistically non- significant, but Polymer bur taken more time in comparison to Conventional burs. Conclusion: Smartprep bur is more conservative in selectively dentin caries removal than Conventional burs but same time it is more time consuming than Conventional burs.
