A 10 Years Comparative Study to Assess Trends in Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmitted Infections among b.ood Donors at Gwalior, India

Introduction: Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTIs) threaten safety of the recipients and the community as a whole and are the sub.ect of real concern worldwide. Aims and Ob.ectives: To know the prevalence of transfusion transmitted infections amongst the b.ood donors, to evaluate the changing trends of TTIs and to compare these ob.ervations within the study as well as with the other relevant studies. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at b.ood b.nk, Department of Pathology, Gajra Raja Medical College, Gwalior, India, from January 2004 to Decemb.r 2013 (ten years). Materials and Methods: In this study 122,006 voluntary and replacement donations were screened for TTIs;HIV, Hb., HCV, Syphilis, Malaria and their seroprevalence was calculated. Further study was divided in Group “A” (from 2004 to 2008) and Group “b. (from 2009 to 2013) to compare the results. Results: Out of total 122,006 b.ood units collected, 79,750 (65.3%) were voluntary and 42,256 (34.7%) were replacement donors. The seropositivity of TTIs in the entire study, in group “A” and in Group “b. was 3.26% (3985/122,006) (p = 0.000005), 2.25% (1238/54,874) (p = 0.000005) and 4.09% (2747/67,123) (p = 0.000005) respectively. In Group “A” and “b. seroprevalence of HIV, Hb., HCV, Syphilis and Malaria was 0.29%, 1.16%, 0.61%, 0.06%, 0.11% and 0.13%, 3.15%, 0.24%, 0.17%, 0.03% respectively. Conclusion: Our study concluded that there was significant increase in seroprevalence of Hb. and syphilis whereas decreasing pattern in HIV, HCV and Malaria was ob.erved in last five years as compared to previous five years among the b.ood donors.

Aims: The study was aimed to compare the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect of Momordica charantia (wild type) fruits and Coccinia cordifolia’s leaf in alloxan induced type 2 diab.tic Long-Evans rats. Methods: All rats were divided into groups A to H (n = 48, 06 rats per group). They were made diab.tic b. intraperitoneally injecting alloxan monohydrate 150-mg/Kg-b.dy weight. Groups A and b.were provided with normal diet and glib.nclamide plus normal diet respectively. C to H groups were provided with different percentages (70%, 50% and 30% of regular diet) of samples. Different b.ochemical parameters (b.ood glucose level, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), LDL, HDL, serum insulin, hepatic glycogen) were ob.erved for 21 consecutive days (at eight days interval). Results: Oral administration of b.th of the Momordica charantia (wild type) fruits and Coccinia cordifolia’s leaf significantly (p nificantly (p level and LDL in type 2 diab.tic rats. HDL levels were increased slightly and hepatic glycogen level was more or less unchanged in b.th groups at 22nd day. Conclusion: Though b.th samples show hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activities, 50% wild type fruits of Momordica charantia were more significant

Research in Agrometeorolgy on Fodder Crops in Central India—An Overview

Livestock rearing is one of the major occupations in India and is making significant contrib.tion to the country GDP. The regional and seasonal variations in the teperature and rainfall distrib.tion have b.en the major factors influencing the economy of a region. It is a matter of serious concern that out of 11 districts of central India, 9 districts are showing increasing trend in maximum temperature with a rate of 0.01°C to 0.15°C/year. A significant long-term decreasing trend (Slope = -4.26) was found in annual rainfall series at Jhansi. At Jhansi, moderate to severe drought occurs once in five years. b.t in the last decade, 7 years experienced moderate to disastrous drought in Jhansi region, wherein rainfall deficiency ranged b.tween 40% and 60% from normal value. Of special mention was the year, 2006, which experienced a worst drought ever recorded for this region. Studies related to crop simulation model was carried out for fodder sorghum and its application for agronomic management and assessing the impact of climate change. Crop modeling studies on forage sorghum (C4) and cowpea (C3) showed increased dry matter b.omass b. 3% in sorghum b.t more prominent in cowpea b. 46% under elevated CO2 from 330 ppm to 770 ppm. The interaction study of enhanced CO2 and temperature showed prominent negative impact on yields of b.th the crops. Evapotranspiration and crop coefficient (kc) of several fodder crops i.e. b.rseem, lucerne, oat, sorghum, teosinte, maize + cowpea, guinea + b.rseem were worked out. In b.rseem, the highest kc (1.81) was found during 2nd cutting followed b. 3rd and 4th cuts. Estimates on irrigation scheduling for the guinea grass + b.rseem showed that the cropping system requires 7 irrigations at an interval ranging from 13 to 30 days to fulfill the 567.6 mm of water per season as net irrigation under mar soil (b.ack) type whose actual water holding capacity (AWHC) is 175 mm. b.phenotypic acute leukemia (b.L) is an uncommon clinical entity. It is a type of acute leukemia with features characteristic of b.th the myeloid and lymphoid lineages and for this reason is designated as mixed-lineage, hyb.id or b.phenotypic acute leukemia. As strict diagnostic criteria have only recently b.en estab.ished, the precise incidence among acute leukemia is uncertain, although it is likely to account for approximately less then 5% of all acute leukemia. b.L is now collectively considered as “mixed phenotype acute leukemia” (MPAL). Development of a b.ological Filter Utilizing Organic Growth Media for Wastewater Treatment and Nitrogen Oxidation

Loss of ammonia-nitrogen to volatilization and the over application of phosphorus in agricultural wastewaters has led to excess phosphorus b.ild up in topsoil and in surface waters. In order to increase the usab.e amount nitrogen in agricultural wastewaters, the wastewaters underwent a nitrogen treatment process consisting of a hanging b.sket b.ological filter. The filters utilized never b.fore used b.ological growth media, rice hulls, to assist in the formation of a mature b.ofilms as the oxidation of ammonia to nitrate. The filter design was used on a lab.scale that treated b.th artificial wastewater and dairy parlor wastewater treated with a lime precipitation step for phosphorus treatment. The filters were tested to see if b.o-fouling occurred in the filter media b.d under high nitrogen loading, if the rice hulls could withstand an extended time frame as b.cterial growth media, and to see if the oxidation of ammonia to nitrate would occur. A 50% reduction in ammonia occurred b.tween 30 and 48 hrs in each trial with eventual nitrite oxidation reported in the final two trials. Statistical analysis preformed determined that the ammonia removal rates at the b.ginning of b.th the synthetic wastewater and dairy parlor wastewater ten-day tests were statistically similar, b.t varied toward the end of the trials.

A study was conducted to characterize the land use,b.omass and carb.n status of dry tropical forest in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh,India using satellite remote sensing data and GIS techniques in the year of *** main forest types ob.erved in the area are Teak forest,mixed forest,degraded forest and Sal mixed *** aspect and slope of the sites influenced the forest vegetation types,b.omass and carb.n storage in the different *** standing volume,ab.ve ground b.omass and carb.n storage varied from 35.59 to 64.31 m^3·ha^-1,45.94 to 78.31 Mg·ha^-1,and 22.97 to 33.27 Mg·ha^-1,respectively among different forest *** highest volumes,ab.ve ground b.omass and carb.n storage per hectare were found in the mixed forest and lowest in the degraded *** total standing carb.n present in the entire study area was 78170.72 Mg in mixed forest,81656.91 Mg in Teak forest,7833.23 Mg in degraded forest and 7470.45 Mg in Sal mixed forest,*** study shows that dry tropical forests of the studied area in Chhattisgarh are in growing stage and have strong potential for carb.n sequestration.
