Over the past decades,droughts and heatwaves frequently appeared in Western Europe(45°-65°N,10°W-20°E)during boreal summer,causing huge impacts on human society and ecosystems.Although these extremes are projected to increase in both frequency and intensity under a warming climate,our knowledge of their interdecadal variations and causes is relatively limited.Here we show that the droughts and heatwaves in Western Europe have shifted in their trends in the last decade:for 1979-2012,wind speed and precipitation have both strengthened in Western Europe;for 2012-2020,however,Western Europe have experienced declined wind speed,decreased precipitation,and higher air temperature,leading to more frequent droughts and heatwaves there.Recent changes in the WE climate and extremes are related to the variations of the North Atlantic westerly jet stream.In 1979-2012(2012-2020),the westerly jet stream shifted equatorward(poleward),which enhanced(reduced)transportation of water vapor fluxes from the North Atlantic Ocean to the European land areas,resulting in wetter(drier)surface in Western Europe.Further analysis suggests that phase changes in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation could have played a key role in regulating the position of the jet stream,providing important implications for decadal predictions of the Western Europe summertime climate and weather extremes.

Large-scale ocean‒atmosphere circulations(LOACs)have a pronounced effect on the near-surface wind speed(NSWS).In this study,we discussed the contributions of zonal and meridional flows to NSWS changes and identify the possible association between the Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode(NAM)and the NSWS changes over eastern China from 1979 to 2017.Results show that the reduction in NSWS over eastern China was mainly dominated by the weakening of the zonal wind component.NAM has a considerable effect on the NSWS over eastern China.When the NAM exhibits positive phases,the zonal-mean westerly weakens at low-to-mid-latitudes(10°-40°N).Meanwhile,descending flows prevail near 40°N,and ascending flows persist near 65°N in the troposphere.In the lower troposphere,there are northerly anomalies at low-to-mid-latitudes and southerly anomalies at mid-to-high latitudes(40°-70°N).The anomalous meridional flows transport heat from low to high latitudes and weaken the north‒south air temperature gradient.The decreased air temperature gradient over East Asia reduces the pressure gradient near the surface,decreasing NSWS in eastern China.NAM variations could dominate(32.0±15.8)%of the changes in the annual mean NSWS.Nevertheless,the contribution of NAM to the interannual changes of the zonal component in NSWS could reach(45.0±12.9)%.

Stem cells may be the future of therapeutics for stroke due to their regenerative and immunomodulatory capabilities.Major barriers faced when employing stem cells,however,include faulty migration,low cell survival,and diminished proliferation.M ultilineage-differentiating stress ensuring (Muse) cells,a subset of mesenchymal stem cells,overcome these barriers.Muse cells aid in neuroregeneration,have immense regenerative potential,and are pluripotent,non-tumorigenic,and immunomodulatory.In stroke specifically,these cells may restore an a nti-inflammatory environment,regenerate damaged neurons,and integrate into the neuronal architecture.In fact,Muse cells may be aptly designed to ameliorate neurovascular unit damage following stroke and observed in other neuroinflammatory disorders.

China's global shipping connectivity had been somewhat overlooked as the bulk of related studies predominantly focused on the throughput volume of its own port cities. This article tackles such lacunae by providing a relational perspective based on the extraction of vessel movement archives from the Lloyd's List corpus. Two complementary analyses are proposed: long-term dynamics with all ships included(1890–2008) and medium-term dynamics focusing on container flows(1978–2016). Each analysis examines China's maritime connectivity in various ways and on different spatial scales, from the global to the local, in terms of concentration, vulnerability, and expansion. The main results underline the influence of technological, economic, and political factors on the changing distribution of connectivity internally and externally. In particular, China has managed to reduce its dependence upon external transit hubs, to increase the internal connectivity of its own port system, and to strengthen its dominance towards an increasing number of foreign nodes and trade partners through the maritime network.

Exploring the reproductive ecology of the tropical semifossorial snake Ninia atrata

Based on histological analyses and field studies,this research describes the reproductive ecology of a population of Ninia atrata snakes inhabiting an oil palm plantation.Furthermore,through a multivariate approach,we explored the main drivers of reproductive output in N.atrata.Results showed that prey abundance and food intake were crucial variables contributing to reproductive output.Multiple linear regression models showed that neonates had high sensitivity(R2=55.29%)to extreme changes in climate,which was strongly related to slug and snail abundance variability and microhabitat quality.Reproductive cycles were markedly different between the sexes,being continuous in males and cyclical in females.Despite this variation,reproductive cycles at the population level were seasonal semi-synchronous.Constant recruitment of neonates all year,multiple clutches,high mating frequency,and continuous sperm production characterized the reproductive phenology of N.atrata.In addition,a significant number of previtellogenic females presented oviductal sperm as well as uterine scars,suggesting a high precocity in the species.The main drivers of reproductive output also differed between the sexes.In females,clutch size and secondary follicle variability were highly related to stomach bolus volume,fat body area,and body mass.In males,height of piles of palm leaves and body mass,rather than intrinsic reproductive traits,were the main drivers of sperm production.Nevertheless,in both cases,the relationship between body mass,prey abundance,and food intake suggests that N.atrata follows the income breeding strategy to compensate for reproductive costs and to maximize fitness.

This perspective focuses on the recent literature regarding the role of the gut-brain axis(GBA) in fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT) and stem cell therapy(SCT) in Parkinson's disease(PD).PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States,yet therapies remain limited.Current research suggests that the GBA may play a role in the pathogenesis of PD.GBAbased FMT as well as SCT offer promising new avenues for PD treatment.Pro bing the interactions between FMT and SCT with the GBA may reveal novel therapeutics for PD.

Introduction:Traumatic brain injury(TBI)is a common diagnosis among veterans secondary to combat experiences.TBI is also rampant among those experiencing homelessness,possibly due to veterans making up 12.3%of the homeless population(Tsai and Rosenheck,2015),or due to the high risk of violence or trauma among those experiencing homelessness.TBI is up to 10×more prevalent among those experiencing homelessness(Stubbs et al.,2020;Dell et al.,2021).
