In this paper, we propose a new soft multi-phase segmentation model where it is assumed that the pixel intensities are distributed as a Gaussian mixture. The model is formulated as a minimization problem through the use of the maximum likelihood estimator and phase-transition theory. The mixture coefficients, which are estimated using a spatially varying mean and variance procedure, are used for image segmentation. The experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the method.

Intermetallic beryllides are potential light-weight, high-temperature structural materials. In this paper. the processing techniques, microstructure. deformation, and oxidation properties of intermetallic beryllides are described. In addition to nickel beryllides (NiBe). which is treated as a model *** high beryllium-containing refractory beryllides, such as Nb2 Be17. VBe12. are also *** room temperature deformation and high-temperature creep properties of these beryllides are repor4ed. At room temperature. NiBe exhibits certain tensile ductility (~ 1 .3%). but all other beryllides are essentially brittle. Nonetheless, these beryllides become ductile at temperatures above approximately 1000℃. Their creep properties are presented. The creep properties are compared with those of intermetallic aluminides. Also. a comparison is made between the ductile-to-brittle transition behaviour of intermetallic beryllides and that of aluminides. Although beryllides are generally oxidation resistant at high temperatures, some beryllides, e.g., ZrBe13, suffer the pest reaction during oxidation at intermediate tem peratures. Soil contamination by toxic trace metal elements,like barium(Ba),may stimulate various undesirable changes in the metabolic activity of *** plant responses are fast and with,direct or indirect,generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).To cope with the stress imposed by the ROS production,plants developed a dual cellular system composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic players that convert ROS,and their by-products,into stable nontoxic *** assess the Ba stress response of two Brassicaceae species(Brassica juncea,a glycophyte,and cakile maritime,a halophyte),plants were exposure to different Ba concentrations(0,100,200,300 and 500µM).The plants response was evaluated through their morphology and development,the determination of plant leaves antioxidant enzymatic activities and by the production of plants secondary *** indicated that the two Brassicaceae species have the ability to survive in an environment containing Ba(even at 500µM).The biomass production of *** was slightly affected whereas an increase in biomass *** was *** stress imposed by Ba activated the antioxidant defense system in the two species,noticed by the changes in the leaves activity of catalase(caT),ascorbate peroxidase(APX)and guaicol peroxidase(GPX),and of the secondary metabolites,through the production of total phenols and *** enzymatic response was not similar within the two plant species:caT and APX seem to have a more important role against the oxidative stress in *** while in *** is ***,total phenols and flavonoids production was more significant in the plants aerial part than in the roots,of the both *** the two Brassicaceae species response was different,in both plants catalytic and non-catalytic transformation of ROS occurs,and both were able to overcome the Ba toxicity and prevent the cell damage.

Due to its extremely shallow in depth, the overland flow hydraulics is affected by surface roughness. raindrop impact, and in the case of laminar flow, fluid viscosity. The initiation of sediment in overland flow is subsequently influenced by these factors and differs greatly from that in river flows. This study is to investigate, by means of flume experiments, the effects of stone roughness, raindrops and fluid viscosity on the initiation of sediment motion in laminar overland flow. It was found that the critical dimensionless shear stress in laminar overland flow is much smaller when surface roughness and rainfall are present than when they are not. Surface roughness and rainfall generate disturbances in the flow which entrain otherwise immobile sediment. As a result, the threshold of motion in laminar flow on a rough surface with rainfall is similar to that in turbulent flow. It was found that critical flow power in laminar flow on rough surfaces in positively correlated with fluid viscosity and negatively correlated with rainfall intensity and surface roughness.
