The objective of this study was to establish a baseline for future studies that aim to determine possible contamination from human, agricultural and industrial activities. As well as the determination of the indices of environmental or geological contamination and enrichment factors of heavy metals Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg and Pb in agricultural soils of Constanza, Jarabacoa, Rancho Arriba and San José de Ocoa (SJO), municipalities located in the valleys of the Central mountain range of the Dominican Republic. The determination of the concentrations of heavy metals was carried out using the X-ray Fluorescence technique. Just like in Azua, San Juan de la Maguana (SJM) y Barahona in the southwest. Producer municipalities of vegetables, rice, beans, corn, melon, watermelon, tomato, banana, avocado, sugar cane and fodder for cattle. The concentration of 160 mg·kg-1 Probable Effect Level (PEL) of Cr according to the SQuiRTs table (USEPA-NOAA) for agricultural soils, were exceeded in 50% of the samples in SJM, SJO, Jarabacoa and Constanza;in Barahona and Azua by 20%. The PEL of 42.8 mg·kg-1 of the Ni was higher in more than 50% of the samples from SJM, Azua, Barahona and Jarabacoa;in SJO and Constanza at 35%. In the case of Cu with a PEL of 108 mg·kg-1 in SJO and Constanza, 5% of the samples exceeded its, in the other areas the concentrations were lower. Zn, As and Pb did not manage to exceed their respective PEL.

Arroyo Verde epithermal deposit,in the North Patagonia region of Argentina,is located within the Lower Chon Aike volcanism and is developed between 192.6±2.5 Ma(mineralization host rock)and 189.5±2.6 Ma(overlying lava).Marifil volcanic complex is the host rock for these veins,veinlets and breccias.This particular small deposit has developed low to intermediate sulphidation characteristics,with gangue mineral textures associated with several ore minerals.Electron probe microanalysis determines electrum,silver minerals such as acanthite,and tetrahedrite,related Ag-Cu minerals like jalpaite,mckinstryite,stromeyerite,and base metals like chalcopyrite,sphalerite,galena and pyrite.Fluid inclusions in quartz of two out of five events indicate that these Low Jurassic veins were formed due to subtle boiling and dilution mechanisms and by low-salinity(3.4 wt.%to 6.7 wt.%NaCl Eq)magmatic-hydrothermal fluid at 225 to 310℃.The fluid inclusion measurements that indicate boiling(Event 3)were plotted,and based on this data,we interpret that the Arroyo Verde deposit has been eroded between 550 and 700 m.This particular character has not been previously recorded for other sectors of the eastern north Patagonian region.

Hyperglycemia is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease,and the consequences ofintensive therapy may depend on the mechanism of the anti-diabetic agent(s)used to achieve a tight control.In animal models,stable analogues of glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1)were able to reduce body weight and blood pressure and also had favorable effects on ischemia following coronary reperfusion.In a similar way,dipeptidyl peptidase IV(DPPIV)showed to have favorable effects in animal models of ischemia/reperfusion.This could be due to the fact that DPPIV inhibitors were able to prevent the breakdown of GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide,but they also decreased the degradation of several vasoactive peptides.Preclinical data for GLP-1,its derivatives and inhibitors of the DPPIV enzyme degradation suggests that these agents may be able to,besides controlling glycaemia,induce cardio-protective and vasodilator effects.Notwithstanding the many favorable cardiovascular effects of GLP-1/incretins reported in different studies,many questions remain unanswered due the limited number of studies in human beings that aim to examine the effects of GLP-1 on cardiovascular endpoints.For this reason,long-term trials searching for positive cardiovascular effects are now in process,such as the CAROLINA and CARMELINA trials,which are supported by small pilot studies performed in humans(and many more animal studies)with incretin-based therapies.On the other hand,selective renal sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors were also evaluated in the prevention of cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes.However,it is quite early to draw conclusions,since data on cardiovascular outcomes and cardiovascular death are limited and long-term studies are still ongoing.In this review,we will analyze the mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular effects of incretins and,at the same time,we will present a critical position about the real value of these compounds in the cardiovascular system and its protection.

The simultaneous study of demography and behavior might provide a more comprehensive understanding about animal responses to anthropogenic disturbances.The White-winged Dove(Zenaida asiatica)is a frequent dweller of urban and agricultural habitats in North America,Central America,and the Caribbean.Still,research on the species is heavily biased to the USA.We analyzed the response of the species to human disturbances during winter across an urban-agricultural landscape in northwestern Mexico through a demographic and behavioral approach.We modeled the effect of disturbance types(pedestrians,cars,pavement and building cover)on the density of the species.Also,we investigated if surveillance behavior varied across the landscape by estimating and comparing perching proportion among land uses(urban grey areas,urban green areas,cropfields,shrublands).We did not detect the species within cropfields,possibly because food resources were not available for the dove during winter in this land use.Pavement cover limited species’density,as it might reduce the surface of the preferred feeding substrates of the dove.Pedestrians and building cover increased the density of the species,as they might provide food and shelter for the dove,respectively.Surveillance behavior peaked in urban grey areas,whereas it dropped in urban green areas.Differences on threat levels,threat type,and protective cover among land uses might in-fluence such behavioral pattern.Our approach contributes to the knowledge of the species and demonstrates that both demographic and behavioral cues provide complementary evidence for analyzing the impact of human disturbances on animals.

There is a scarcity of literature discussing nurses’ behaviors toward caring for suspected or confirmed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. The development of a scale specific to measure nurses’ behaviors will allow health institutions to assess the disposition of their nurses in terms of HIV care. This study aims to present the rigors of developing and validating a reliable instrument to contextualize these nurses’ behaviors. This study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed method design to develop the NB-CSHAP scale. Thematic analysis was done on the qualitative data from the interviews with persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) from which items were selected to be included in the scale. Exploratory factor analysis was utilized to extract the factors and Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the reliability of the instrument. Four factors were extracted and are categorized as either caring or discriminatory behaviors. These include: (1) service-oriented, (2) openhanded, (3) perceptive, and (4) discriminatory. The scale has an internal consistency of 0.73. The scale shows acceptable psychometric properties, hence can be used to assess the nurses’ behaviors in caring for confirmed or suspected HIV clients. The scale may be used by health institutions to determine the quality of the patient care provided by their nurses to clients with confirmed or suspected HIV .

Background: Duodenoscope-related multidrug-resistant organism(MDRO) infections raise concerns. Disposable duodenoscopes have been recently introduced in the market and approved by regulatory agencies with the aim to reduce the risk of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) associated infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of procedures performed with single-use duodenoscopes in patients with clinical indications to single-operator cholangiopancreatoscopy. Methods: This is a multicenter international, retrospective study combining all patients who underwent complex biliopancreatic interventions using the combination of a single-use duodenoscope and a single-use cholangioscope. The primary outcome was technical success defined as ERCP completion for the intended clinical indication. Secondary outcomes were procedural duration, rate of cross-over to reusable duodenoscope, operator-reported satisfaction score(1 to 10) on performance rating of the single-use duodenoscope, and adverse event(AE) rate. Results: A total of 66 patients(26, 39.4% female) were included in the study. ERCP was categorized according to ASGE ERCP grading system as 47(71.2%) grade 3 and 19(28.8%) grade 4. The technical success rate was 98.5%(65/66). Procedural duration was 64(interquartile range 15-189) min, cross-over rate to reusable duodenoscope was 1/66(1.5%). The satisfaction score of the single-use duodenoscope classified by the operators was 8.6 ± 1.3 points. Four patients(6.1%) experienced AEs not directly related to the single-use duodenoscope, namely 2 post-ERCP pancreatitis(PEP), 1 cholangitis and 1 bleeding.Conclusions: Single-use duodenoscope is effective, reliable and safe even in technically challenging procedures with a non-inferiority to reusable duodenoscope, making these devices a viable alternative to standard reusable equipment.

In the context of the quantum-mechanical description of single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering,intensity-field correlation measurements of photons emitted from a plasmonic cavity are explored,theoretically,using the technique of conditional homodyne detection.The inelastic interplay between plasmons and vibrations of a diatomic molecule placed inside the cavity can be manifested in phase-dependent third-order fluctuations of the light recorded by the aforesaid technique,allowing us to reveal signatures of non-classicality(indicatives of squeezing)of the outgoing Raman photons.

BACKGROUND Whole-tumor apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)histogram analysis is relevant to predicting the neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy(nCRT)response in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer(LARC).AIM To evaluate the performance of ADC histogram-derived parameters for predicting the outcomes of patients with LARC.METHODS This is a single-center,retrospective study,which included 48 patients with LARC.All patients underwent a pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)scan for primary tumor staging and a second restaging MRI for response evaluation.The sample was distributed as follows:18 responder patients(R)and 30 non-responders(non-R).Eight parameters derived from the whole-lesion histogram analysis(ADCmean,skewness,kurtosis,and ADC10^(th),25^(th),50^(th),75^(th),90^(th) percentiles),as well as the ADCmean from the hot spot region of interest(ROI),were calculated for each patient before and after treatment.Then all data were compared between R and non-R using the Mann-Whitney U test.Two measures of diagnostic accuracy were applied:the receiver operating characteristic curve and the diagnostic odds ratio(DOR).We also reported intra-and interobserver variability by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC).RESULTS Post-nCRT kurtosis,as well as post-nCRT skewness,were significantly lower in R than in non-R(both Ploss of both kurtosis and skewness than non-R(Δ%kurtosis and Δ skewness,Pdemonstrated changes between groups were post-nCRT ADC10^(th),Δ%ADC10^(th),Δ%ADCmean,and ROIΔ%ADCmean.However,the best diagnostic performance was achieved byΔ%kurtosis at a threshold of 11.85%(Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve[AUC]=0.991,DOR=376),followed by post-nCRT kurtosis=0.78×10^(-3)mm^(2)/s(AUC=0.985,DOR=375.3),Δskewness=0.16(AUC=0.885,DOR=192.2)and post-nCRT skewness=1.59×10^(-3)mm^(2)/s(AUC=0.815,DOR=168.6).Finally,intraclass correlation coefficient analysis showed excellent in

In recent years,there has been a growing need to understand how salinity affects microbial communities in agricultural soils.Archaeal and bacterial community diversities and structures were investigated by high-throughput sequencing analysis of their 16S rRNA in two arable soils with low electrical conductivity(EC)(2.3 and 2.6 dS m^(-1))and a saline soil(EC=17.6 dS m^(-1)).The dominant bacterial phyla in the soils were Proteobacteria(relative abundance(RA)=46.2%),followed by Acidobacteria(RA=13.1%)and Actinobacteria(RA=10.0%),whereas Serratia(RA=6.0%)and Bacillus(RA=4.0%)were the dominant bacterial genera.Candidatus Nitrososphaera(53.5%)was the dominant archaeal phylotype in the arable soils,whereas Nitrosopumilus(RA=0.4%)dominated in the saline soil.The archaeal and bacterial community structures were different between the soils and significantly correlated with soil sand,arsenic,barium,and antimony contents,but not with soil salinity.

Predictive roles of organizational and personal factors in work engagement among nurses

Objective:To determine the work engagement levels of hospital nurses and the predictive roles that nurses’personal and organizational characteristics play.Methods:A cross-sectional design was employed in this study,which included 549 nurses working in the Central Philippines.Nurses were selected through purposive sampling,and a self-repor t questionnaire outlining personal and organizational characteristics was employed.The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale(UWES)was applied to gather data about nurse engagement.Results:The dedication score was the highest among the three dimensions of engagement while the vigor score was the lowest.Overall,Filipino nurses experienced an average level of work engagement.We observed significant relationships between a nurse’s age,years of experience in nursing,years in their present unit,and their position at work and their levels of engagement,vigor,sense of dedication,and absorption.Hospital capacity was a negative predictor of vigor,dedication,absorption,and overall work engagement.Fur ther,the type of nursing contract was a negative predictor of vigor and dedication.The type of hospital and the nurse’s position were positive predictors of vigor,dedication,and absorption.Conclusions:Filipino nurses were satisfactorily engaged at work.A number of nurses’personal and organizational characteristics play a predictive role in their work engagement.Thus,nursing administrators must suppor t,develop,and implement activities and measures that engage nurses at work.
