Modelling fuel loads of understorey vegetation and forest floor components in pine stands in NW Spain

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(P.pinaster;P.radiata and P.sylvestris):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor fuels.Additive systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as regressors.The systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological differences.In general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel fractions.The best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability explained.To reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential regressors.Only relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor relationships.Nevertheless,these models explained around 52%of the observed variability.Finally,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were fitted.These models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowing for landscape-scale estimates of total fuel lo

Congenital heart disease(CHD)is observed in up to 1%of live births and is one of the leading causes of mortality from birth defects.While hundreds of genes have been implicated in the genetic etiology of CHD,their role in CHD pathogenesis is still poorly understood.This is largely a reflection of the sporadic nature of CHD,as well as its variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance.We reviewed the monogenic causes and evidence for oligogenic etiology of CHD,as well as the role of de novo mutations,common variants,and genetic modifiers.For further mechanistic insight,we leveraged single-cell data across species to investigate the cellular expression characteristics of genes implicated in CHD in developing human and mouse embryonic hearts.Understanding the genetic etiology of CHD may enable the application of precision medicine and prenatal diagnosis,thereby facilitating early intervention to improve outcomes for patients with CHD.

Effectiveness of music intervention on cognitive function and neuropsychiatric symptoms in the elderly with dementia:a meta-analysis

Dementia is increasing dramatically with an increasing elderly population.Pharmacological interventions are proven to have limited efficacy to treat many of the features of dementia.In such a situation,non-pharmacological means become important to help people with dementia,especially music therapy.The efficacy of music intervention on cognition has been barely explored in the literature,and the few studies that are available present inconsistent results.The aim of this systematic review is to have a meta-analysis on the effect of music therapy for improvements in cognitive functions as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms in the elderly with dementia.

Trends in lactose-derived bioactives:synthesis and purification

Lactose obtained from cheese whey is a low value commodity despite its great potential as raw material for the production of bioactive compounds.Among them,prebiotics stand out as valuable ingredients to be added to food matrices to build up functional foods,which currently represent the most active sector within the food industry.Functional foods market has been growing steadily in the recent decades along with the increasing awareness of the World population about healthy nutrition,and this is having a strong impact on lactose-derived bioactives.Most of them are produced by enzyme biocatalysis because of molecular precision and environmental sustainability considerations.The current status and outlook of the production of lactose-derived bioactive compounds is presented with special emphasis on downstream operations which are critical because of the rather modest lactose conversion and product yields that are attainable.Even though some of these products have already an established market,there are still several challenges referring to the need of developing better catalysts and more cost-effective downstream operations for delivering high quality products at affordable prices.This technological push is expected to broaden the spectrum of lactose-derived bioactive compounds to be produced at industrial scale in the near future.

Transcriptome analysis shows nicotinamide seed treatment alters expression of genes involved in defense and epigenetic processes in roots of seedlings of Picea abies

Nicotinamide treatment of plants and plant cell cultures has been shown to promote defense and decrease levels of DNA methylation.In the present study,we used RNA-seq technology to study overall changes in gene expression induced in roots of 3-month-old spruce(Picea abies)seedlings grown from nicotinamide-treated seeds to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying the defense promotion.Approximately 350 genes were identified as differentially expressed in roots after the seed treatment.Stress response genes,including transcription factors MYB77 and LHY and two chitinase enzymes,were generally upregulated,whereas genes thought to be involved in epigenetic regulation such as DDM1,known to promote DNA methylation,were present at high frequency among the downregulated genes.Across all samples,the expression of downregulated epigenetic-related genes was highly correlated with the nicotinamide treatment,indicating a common regulation.Our results support an earlier hypothesis regarding a potential role of nicotinamide as a defense-signal mediator.

Antisense therapy:a potential breakthrough in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders characterized by the progressive degeneration of neurons in the central or peripheral nervous system.Currently,there is no cure for neurodegenerative diseases and this means a heavy burden for patients and the health system worldwide.Therefore,it is necessary to find new therapeutic approaches,and antisense therapies offer this possibility,having the great advantage of not modifying cellular genome and potentially being safer.Many preclinical and clinical studies aim to test the safety and effectiveness of antisense therapies in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.The objective of this review is to summarize the recent advances in the development of these new technologies to treat the most common neurodegenerative diseases,with a focus on those antisense therapies that have already received the approval of the U.S.Food and Drug Administration.

Damage detection with image processing: a comparative study

Large structures,such as bridges,highways,etc.,need to be inspected to evaluate their actual physical and functional condition,to predict future conditions,and to help decision makers allocating maintenance and rehabilitation resources.The assessment of civil infrastructure condition is carried out through information obtained by inspection and/or monitoring operations.Traditional techniques in structural health monitoring(SHM)involve visual inspection related to inspection standards that can be time-consuming data collection,expensive,labor intensive,and dangerous.To address these limitations,machine vision-based inspection procedures have increasingly been investigated within the research community.In this context,this paper proposes and compares four different computer vision procedures to identify damage by image processing:Otsu method thresholding,Markov random fields segmentation,RGB color detection technique,and K-means clustering algorithm.The first method is based on segmentation by thresholding that returns a binary image from a grayscale image.The Markov random fields technique uses a probabilistic approach to assign labels to model the spatial dependencies in image pixels.The RGB technique uses color detection to evaluate the defect extensions.Finally,K-means algorithm is based on Euclidean distance for clustering of the images.The benefits and limitations of each technique are discussed,and the challenges of using the techniques are highlighted.To show the effectiveness of the described techniques in damage detection of civil infrastructures,a case study is presented.Results show that various types of corrosion and cracks can be detected by image processing techniques making the proposed techniques a suitable tool for the prediction of the damage evolution in civil infrastructures.

当2023年的12月,北京落下第一场雪的时候,广州依旧如夏季般炎热。陆续举办的几场艺博会相继落下帷幕,这些艺博会中有已举办了28届的老牌艺博会,也有今年正式启动的新品牌,算是为这个当代艺术新兴市场小小地添了一把火。在艺博会“井喷”的当下,一座城市有好几个不同主题的艺博会已成常态。放眼国内,四个一线城市中,仅剩广州还未有持续深耕且口碑良好的艺博会品牌。但这一颗颗投下的小石子,虽尚未能掀起风浪,仍荡起不少的涟漪。从无到有,投石问路,对艺术“小白”、艺术爱好者、不同层级的藏家、画廊、机构,都有些不一样的意义。
