Plant growth and metabolism of exotic and native Crotalaria species for mine land rehabilitation in the Amazon

Despite its enormous benefits,mining is respon-sible for intense changes to vegetation and soil ***,after extraction,it is necessary to rehabilitate the mined areas,creating better conditions for the establishment of plant species which is *** study evaluated mineral and organic fertilization on the growth,and carbon and nitrogen(N)metabolism of two Crotalaria species[Cro-talaria spectabilis(exotic species)and Crotalaria maypu-rensis(native species from Carajás Mineral Province(CMP)]established on a waste pile from an iron mine in CMP.A control(without fertilizer application)and six fertilization mixtures were tested(i=NPK;ii=NPK+micronutrients;iii=NPK+micronutrients+organic compost;iv=PK;v=PK+micronutrients;vi=PK+micronutrients+organic compost).Fertilization contributed to increased growth of both species,and treatments with NPK and micronutrients had the best results(up to 257%***),while organic fertilization did not show *** Crotalaria had a greater number of nodules,higher nodule dry mass,chlorophyll a and b contents and showed free ammonium as the predominant N form,reflecting greater increments in biomass compared to native *** having lower growth,the use of this native species in the rehabilitation of mining areas should be considered,mainly because it has good development and meets current government legislation as an opportunity to restore local biodiversity.

Natural convection effects on TNT solidification inside a shaped charge mold

High Explosive Anti-Tank(HEAT) warheads and ammunitions are frequently produced by explosive casting inside an axis-symmetric mold with an inverted conical geometry in the basis. In order to prevent manufacturing defects, the solidification process must be controlled. In this study, a dimensionless solidification model has been proposed to investigate the heat transfer considering the natural convection inside the liquid explosive and the numerical simulations were performed by using COMSOL Multiphysics and Modeling Software, employing trinitrotoluene(TNT) thermophysical properties. The effect of three different boundary conditions on the top of the mold have been evaluated: convection, adiabatic and isothermal. It has been observed that solidification process was faster for convection case and slower for isothermal case, while an intermediary total solidification time value was found for adiabatic ***, liquid explosive was completely surrounded by solid explosive during the solidification process for convection case and also for adiabatic case through the end of the process. Otherwise, it was not observed for isothermal case. The natural convection effects promoted a vortex inside the liquid explosive, accelerating the heat transfer process. It has been concluded that isothermal mold top boundary condition should be preferred to prevent manufacturing defects, avoiding high thermal stress.

Plant growth and nutrient use efficiency of two native Fabaceae species for mineland revegetation in the eastern Amazon

The primary challenge of mineland revegetation is the establishment of species able to cope with low availability of nutrients,especially in steep slopes such as of mine *** evaluated plant growth response and nutrient use efficiency(NUE)of two promising native Fabaceae species(Dioclea apurensis—liana from metalliferous savannas;Bauhinia longipedicellata—tree from Amazon rainforest)from the Caraja´s Mineral Province,eastern *** were grown separately in 2-kg pots filled with mining *** were fertilized with nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium(NPK),lime,and *** results showed increments on growth of both species when nutrients were applied to the mining *** showed increases in leaf area,plant height,stem diameter,and shoot dry mass production when NPK or NPK?micronutrients were applied,while *** was responsive to application of NPK?lime or NPK?lime?***,*** showed higher NUE than ***,especially at the lowest doses of N,P and *** findings may indicate a substantial advantage of *** for mineland revegetation,as this species may require lower nutrient inputs,being,therefore,a more sustainable way to revegetate degraded areas.

A 32-million year cycle detected in sea-level fluctuations over the last 545 Myr

Spectral analyses of past relative sea-level oscillations as represented by the ages of 57 Phanerozoic(the last 545 Myr)stratigraphic sequence boundaries from the Canadian Arctic show a strong spectral peak at 32 Myr(>99.9%confidence).These findings concur with previous reports of significant cycles with periods of around 30 Myr in various records of fluctuations of sea level,and in potentially related episodes of tectonism,volcanism,climate,and biotic *** boundaries commonly coincide with stage boundaries based on biostratigraphy,and are correlated with episodes of extinction and times of flood-basalt *** connection between tectonics and sea-level variations may come from changes in rates of ocean-floor spreading and subduction,intraplate stresses from plate-reorganizations,and pulsations of hotspot *** coordinated periodic fluctuations in tectonics,sea level and climate may be modulated by cyclical activity in the Earth’s mantle,although some pacing by astronomical cycles is suspected.

A pulse of the Earth: A 27.5-Myr underlying cycle in coordinated geological events over the last 260 Myr

We performed spectral analyses on the ages of 89 well-dated major geological events of the last 260 Myr from the recent geologic literature. These events include times of marine and non-marine extinctions,major ocean-anoxic events, continental flood-basalt eruptions, sea-level fluctuations, global pulses of intraplate magmatism, and times of changes in seafloor-spreading rates and plate reorganizations. The aggregate of all 89 events shows ten clusters in the last 260 Myr, spaced at an average interval of ~ 26.9 Myr, and Fourier analysis of the data yields a spectral peak at 27.5 Myr at the ≥96% confidence level. A shorter period of ~ 8.9 Myr may also be significant in modulating the timing of geologic *** results suggest that global geologic events are generally correlated, and seem to come in pulses with an underlying ~ 27.5-Myr cycle. These cyclic pulses of tectonics and climate change may be the result of geophysical processes related to the dynamics of plate tectonics and mantle plumes, or might alternatively be paced by astronomical cycles associated with the Earth’s motions in the Solar System and the Galaxy.

Correlation of the largest craters,stratigraphic impact signatures,and extinction events over the past 250 Myr

The six largest known impact craters of the last 250 Myr(≥70 km in diameter),which are capable of causing significant environmental damage,coincide with four times of recognized extinction events at 36(with 2 craters),66,and 145 Myr ago,and possibly with two provisional extinction events at 168 and215 Myr *** impact cratering events are accompanied by layers in the geologic record interpreted as impact *** occurrences of impacts and extinctions can be rejected at confidence levels of99.96%(for 4 impact/extinctions)to 99.99%(for 6 impact/extinctions).These results argue that several extinction events over the last 250 Myr may be related to the effects of large-body impacts.

Natural variation of physical-habitat conditions among least-disturbed streams of a neotropical river basin in Brazil

The determination of natural variation in physical habitat conditions and the establishment of least-disturbed reference standards is important for ecosystem *** regions hold most of the global freshwater diversity,nevertheless little is known about the natural conditions of their physical *** calculated 255 physical habitat metrics for 31 stream sites in five protected areas of the Brazilian S~ao Francisco River basin to identify the most variable characteristics among tropical streams in least-disturbed *** performed principal components analyses(PCA)to find the most relevant metrics for ordination of streams in the following categories:water quality(2);substrate(7);fish shelter(6);riparian vegetation(9);and channel morphology(7).We used distance-based linear models(DISTLM)to test how much of the variation of these metrics could be explained by geographic position,average elevation,and average discharge of stream *** best statistically significant models explained 42%of substrate(33%geographic position;9%average elevation),26%of channel morphology(22%geographic position;4%average discharge),23%of water quality(14%geographic position;9%average discharge),17%of fish shelter(9%geographic position;8%average elevation),and 14%of riparian vegetation(7%geographic position;7%average elevation)***,regional features(*** and climate)related to the geographic position are of greatest importance,followed by average elevation and discharge for determining physical habitat ***,we suggest that reference sites should be set for tropical streams in the same regional landscape and with similar average elevation and discharge.

Objective To evaluate the efficiency of silymarin(SMN) in modulating metabolic parameters and redox status in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1 DM).Methods Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan. The diabetic rats were administered with SMN at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight/d for 30 consecutive days. The rats were divided into the following four groups: vehicle control, diabetic(alloxan-treated), DS50(alloxan +50 mg/kg body weight/d of SMN), and DS100(alloxan + 100 mg/kg body weight/d of SMN) groups. The bodyweight and food and water intake were evaluated. After 30 d, the animals were euthanized and the blood was collected for measuring the serum levels of glucose, triacylglycerol(TAG), urea, and creatinine. The liver and pancreas were collected for measuring the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT), and the levels of carbonylated protein(PC). The pancreas sample was also used for histological *** SMN reduced hepatic(P < 0.001) and pancreatic(P < 0.001) protein damage and creatinine levels(P = 0.0141) in addition to decreasing food(P < 0.001) and water intake(P < 0.001). However,treatment with SMN did not improve beta-cell function or decrease blood glucose levels in diabetic *** SMN improved polyphagia and polydipsia, renal function, and protected the liver and pancreas against protein damage without affecting hyperglycemia in diabetic animals.
