This study.investigated the ef.ect of.a visual memory.training program on Chinese handwriting perf.rmance among primary.school students with dy.lexia in Hong Kong. Eight students of.Grade 2 to 3 who were diagnosed with dy.lexia were recruited. All participants received six sessions of.training, which composed of.30-minute computerized game-based visual memory.training and 30-minute Chinese character segmentation training. Visual perceptual skills and Chinese handwriting perf.rmance were assessed bef.re and af.er the training, as well as three weeks af.er training using the Test of.Visual Perceptual Skills (3rd edition) (TVPS-3) and the Chinese Handwriting Analy.is Sy.tem (CHAS). In comparing the pre- and post-training results, paired t-tests revealed signif.cant improvements in visual memory.skills, as well as handwriting speed, pause time and pen pressure af.er the training. There was no signif.cant improvement in handwriting accuracy.or legibility. The improved visual memory.and handwriting perf.rmance did not show a signif.cant drop at the f.llow-up assessments. This study.showed promising results on a structured program to improve the Chinese handwriting perf.rmance, mainly.in speed, of.primary.school children. The improvements appeared to be well-sustained af.er the training program. There is a need to f.rther study.the long-term ef.ect of.the program through a randomized controlled trial study.

Understanding the genetic component of.scoliosis in humans has relied on the assumption that spine development is conserved across species. Since evolutionary.conserved genes tend to lie within sy.teny.blocks (HSBs) and genes which are not conserved lie within evolutionary.breakpoint regions (EBRs), HSB analy.is may.be used to determine if.spine development is conserved across species. We hy.othesized that vertebral patterning genes are conserved in amniotes and their location is within stable or “sy.tenic” regions of.chromosomes. Seventy.seven patterning genes involved in f.f. Wnt and Notch signaling pathway. were analy.ed to determine their location within HSBs or EBRs in the genomes of.several amniotic species. The human genome was divided into 1 Mbp intervals and a comparison was made to determine whether these genes were pref.rentially.localized within HSBs or EBRs associated with rapid evolution. The results indicate that genes associated with somite development in humans are pref.rentially.located away.f.om the EBRs: 0.014 genes in EBRs on genome average vs. 0.030 on average in other parts of.the genome (p-value = 0.01). The concentration of.vertebral patterning genes in HSBs, provides evidence that developmental pathway. involved in vertebral morphogenesis are likely.conserved across amniotes, consistent with their known f.nction. These data support prior observations indicating that gene networks associated with major developmental processes such as neuronal, central nervous sy.tem, bone and blood vessel development, some mediated by.Wnt and Notch signaling pathway., were less likely.to be localized at EBRs.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a member of.the f.aviviridae f.mily.and causes acute and chronic hepatitis. Chronic HCV inf.ction may.result in severe liver damage including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The liver is the primary.target organ of.HCV, and the hepatocy.e is its primary.target cell. Attachment of.the virus to the cell surf.ce f.llowed by.viral entry.is the f.rst step in a cascade of.interactions between the virus and the target cell that is required f.r successf.l entry.into the cell and initiation of.inf.ction. This step is an important determinant of.tissue tropism and pathogenesis; it thus represents a major target f.r antiviral host cell responses, such as antibody.mediated virus neutralization. f.llowing the development of.novel cell culture models f.r HCV inf.ction our understanding of.the HCV entry.process and mechanisms of.virus neutralization has been markedly.advanced. In this review we summarize recent developments in the molecular biology.of.viral entry.and its impact on pathogenesis of.HCV inf.ction, development of.novel preventive and therapeutic antiviral strategies.

Objective To identif.0}f.ctors associated with very.long survival among all cancer cases di agnosed at age 19 y.ars or y.unger registered by.the Cancer Data Service at the University.of.Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. AIM: To identif.0}and characterize the f.nction of.non-mu-scle my.sin Ⅱ (NMM Ⅱ) isof.rms in primary.rat hepatic stellate cells (HSCs).METHODS: Primary.HSCs were isolated f.om male Spra-gue-Dawley.rats by.pronase/collagenase digestion. Total RNA and protein were harvested f.om quiescent and culture-activated HSCs. NMM Ⅱ isof.rm (Ⅱ-A, Ⅱ-B and Ⅱ-C) gene and protein expression were measured by.RealTime poly.erase chain reaction and Western blot analy.es respectively. NMM Ⅱ protein localization was visualized in vitro using immunocy.ochemical analy.is. f.r in vivo assessment, liver tissue was harvested f.om bile duct-ligated (BDL) rats and NMM Ⅱisof.rm expression determined by.immunohistochemistry. Using a selective my.sin Ⅱ inhibitor and siRNA-mediated knockdown of.each isof.rm, NMM Ⅱ f.nctionality.inprimary.rat HSCs was determined by.contraction and migration ***: NMM Ⅱ-A and Ⅱ-B mRNA expression was increased in culture-activated HSCs (Day.14) with sig-nif.icant increases seen in all pairwise comparisons (Ⅱ-A: 12.67 ± 0.99 (quiescent) vs 17.36 ± 0.78 (Day.14), P y.14), P y.14), P y.14), P f.icant dif.erences were observed in NMM Ⅱ-C mRNA and protein expression between quiescent and activated HSCs. In culture-activated HSCs, NMM Ⅱ-A and Ⅱ-B merged with f.actin at the cellular periphery.and throughout cy.oplasm respectively. In vitro stud-ies showed increased expression of.NMM Ⅱ-B in HSCs activated by.BDL compared to sham-operated animals. There were no apparent increases of.NMM Ⅱ-A and Ⅱ-C protein expression in HSCs during hepatic BDL injury. In Australia,the proportion of.f.rest area that burns in a ty.ical f.re season is less than f.r other vegetation ***,the 2019-2020 austral spring-summer was an exception,with over f.ur times the previous maximum area burnt in southeast Australian temperate *** f.rest f.res have extensive socio-economic,human health,greenhouse gas emissions,and biodiversity.impacts due to high f.re intensities.A robust model that identif.es driving f.ctors of.f.rest f.res and relates impact thresholds to f.re activity.at regional scales would help land managers and f.re-f.ghting agencies prepare f.r potentially.hazardous f.re in ***,we developed a machine-learning diagnostic model to quantif.0}nonlinear relationships between monthly.burnt area and biophy.ical f.ctors in southeast Australian f.rests f.r 2001-2020 on a 0.25°grid based on several biophy.ical parameters,notably.f.re weather and vegetation *** model explained over 80%of.the variation in the burnt *** identif.ed that burnt area dy.amics in southeast Australian f.rest were primarily.controlled by.extreme f.re weather,which mainly.linked to f.uctuations in the Southern Annular Mode(SAM)and Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD),with a relatively.smaller contribution f.om the central Pacif.c El Niño Southern Oscillation(ENSO).Our f.re diagnostic model and the non-linear relationships between burnt area and environmental covariates can provide usef.l guidance to decision-makers who manage preparations f.r an upcoming f.re season,and model developers working on improved early.warning sy.tems f.r f.rest f.res.
