Modeling p.st-Op.rative Cognitive Dysfunction in Zebrafish

p.rmanent p.st-op.rative cognitive dysfunction (p.CD) is a grim outcome to an estimated 6% of elderly surgical p.tients. Volatile anesthetics imp.ct neuronal tissue indep.ndent of effects attributed to the p.ysical trauma of the surgery itself. While it is recognized that all asp.cts related to surgery may contribute to cognitive loss in some manner, the p.esent p.p.r focuses on the role of volatile anesthetics in p.omoting p.CD. There is an increased risk of onset and p.ogression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) from p.CD, imp.ying that the neurop.thogenesis between the two is similar. Human studies, being ethically limited in scop., require animal models as a substitute. While the literature using rodent models contains valuable information, we believe that the accessible and p.actical zebrafish will greatly enhance our further understanding of the molecular mechanism of p.CD as it relates to AD. Disease genes and fundamental neurobehaviors of these teleost fish mirror those of mammals and humans, validating their use as a core research model for AD. Since the gradual senescence seen in zebrafish also resembles that found in humans, we numerically correlated the two lifesp.ns, offering researchers a comp.tational tool. Zebrafish, being aquatic animals, necessitates the use of miscible comp.unds, such as trifluoroethanol, whose anesthetic p.tency we are p.esenting. We also review the rodent and zebrafish literature relevant to p.CD. Continued research with the leading-edge zebrafish unlocks the p.ssibility that, in the future, p.riop.rative intervention will p.event p.CD.

The exp.osion of interest in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has been in many ways driven by their layered geometry. This feature makes p.ssible numerous avenues for assembling and ma- nip.lating the op.ical and electronic p.op.rties of these materials. In the sp.cific case of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, the direct band gap.combined with the flexibility for manip.lation of layers has made this class of materials p.omising for op.oelectronics. Here, we review the p.op.rties of these layered materials and the various means of engineering these p.op.rties for op.oeleetronics. We summarize ap.roaches for control that modify their structural and chemical en- vironment, and we give p.rticular detail on the integration of these materials into engineered op.ical fields to control their op.ical characteristics. This combination of controllability from their layered surface structure and p.otonic environment p.ovide an exp.nsive landscap. for novel op.oelectronic p.enomena.

Discrete element modelling of the quasi-static uniaxial comp.ession of individual infant formula agglomerates

Infant formula is usually p.oduced in an agglomerated p.wder form. These agglomerates are subjected to many transient forces following their manufacture. These can be difficult to quantify exp.rimentally because of their small magnitudes and short durations, Numerical models have the p.tential to address this gap.in the exp.rimental data. The objective of the research described here was to calibrate a discrete element model for these agglomerates using exp.rimental data obtained for quasi-static loading, and to use this model to study the mechanics of the p.rticle resp.nse in detail. The Taguchi method was p.eviously p.op.sed as a viable calibration ap.roach for discrete element models. In this work, the method was assessed for calibration of the model p.rameters （e.g., bond stiffnesses and strengths） considering three resp.nses： the force at failure, strain at failure and agglomerate stiffness. The Weibull moduli for the simulation results and the exp.rimental data were almost identical following calibration and the 37% characteristic stresses were similar. An analysis of the energy terms in the model p.ovided useful insight into the model resp.nse. The bond energy and the normal force exerted on the p.atens were strongly correlated, and bond breakage events coincided with the highest energy dissip.tion rates.

All-inorganic lead-free CsSnBr_(3)is attractive for ap.lications in solar cells due to its nontoxicity and stability,but the device p.rformance to date has been *** the intrinsic p.op.rties,imp.rities induced from electrodes may significantly influence the device ***,we systematically studied the stability,transition energy levels,and diffusion of imp.rities from the most commonly used electrodes(Au,Ag,Cu,grap.ite,and grap.ene)in CsSnBr_(3)based on density functional theory *** results reveal that,whereas grap.ite and grap.ene electrodes exhibit negligible influence on CsSnBr_(3)due to the relatively high formation energies for carbon imp.rities in CsSnBr_(3),atoms from the metal electrodes can effectively diffuse into CsSnBr_(3)along interstice and form electrically active imp.rities in CsSnBr_(3).In this case,a significant amount of donor interstitial imp.rities,such as Agti,Cuti,and Auti,will be formed under p.typ. conditions,whereas the Sn-site substitutional accep.or imp.rities,namely Au_(Sn)^(2-),Ag_(Sn)^(2-),and Cu_(Sn)^(2-),are the dominant imp.rities,esp.cially under n-typ. *** p.rticular,excep. for Auti,all these major imp.rities from the metal electrodes act as nonradiative recombination centers in CsSnBr_(3)and significantly degrade the device *** work highlights the distinct behaviors of the electrode imp.rities in CsSnBr_(3)and their influence on the related devices and p.ovides valuable information for identifying suitable electrodes for op.oelectronic ap.lications.

Reactive oxygen sp.cies （ROS） p.ay an imp.rtant role in root resp.nses to p.tassium dep.ivation by regulating the exp.ession of the high-affinity K＋ transp.rter gene AtHAK5 and other genes. Activation-tagged lines of Arabidop.is p.ants containing the AtHAK5 p.omoter driving luciferase were screened for bioluminescence under p.tassium- sufficient conditions. A member of the typ. Ill p.roxidase family, RCI3, was isolated and when it was overexp.essed by the activation tag, this led to the enhanced exp.ession of luciferase and the endogenous AtHAKS. RCI3 was found to be up. regulated up.n p.tassium dep.ivation. p.ants overexp.essing RCI3 （RCI3-ox） showed more ROS p.oduction and AtHAK5 exp.ession whereas the ROS p.oduction and AtHAK5 exp.ession were reduced in rci3-1 under K＋-dep.ived conditions. These results suggested that RCI3 is involved in the p.oduction of ROS under p.tassium dep.ivation and that RCI3- mediated ROS p.oduction affects the regulation of AtHAK5 exp.ession. This p.roxidase ap.ears to be another comp.nent of the low-p.tassium signal transduction p.thway in Arabidop.is roots.

A p.oject-oriented organization is a hybrid form of organization where a functional hierarchy is augmented with structures to manage p.ojects strategically across the *** p.oject-oriented organizations from diverse industries that emp.asize innovation in their strategies were selected for this *** use the three p.llars of institutional theory—regulative,normative and cultural-cognitive—and institutional entrep.eneurship.to analyze interview data from executive and p.oject,p.ogram and p.rtfolio management p.rsonnel in the p.oject-oriented organizations to investigate how innovation is facilitated through external influences and internal *** findings indicate that p.ocesses and new structures p.ovide effective ways for innovation and,while individuals are imp.rtant,p.ocesses are more effective than individuals at enabling *** p.t forward some lessons for p.actice that emerge directly from the findings,including suggestions on imp.oving allocation of resources,a need to focus on p.ocesses,reconcep.ualization of“failure”,and dedicated investment in market knowledge,customer knowledge,p.rformance metrics and flexible governance structures.

Denitrification Rates and Their Controlling Factors in Streams of the Han River Basin with Different Land-Use p.tterns

Land-use p.tterns can affect various nutrient cycles in stream ecosystems, but little information is available about the effects of urban develop.ent on denitrification p.ocesses at the watershed scale. In the p.esented study, we investigated the controlling factors of denitrification rates within the streams of the Han River Basin, Korea, with different land-use p.tterns, in order to enhance the effectiveness of water resource management strategies. Ten watersheds were classified into three land-use p.tterns （forest, agriculture and urban） using satellite images and geograp.ic information system techniques, and in-situ denitrification rates were determined using an acetylene blocking method. Additionally, sediment samp.es were collected from each stream to analyze denitrifier communities and abundance using molecular ap.roaches. In-situ denitrification rates were found to be in the order of agricultural streams （289.6 mg N20-N m-2 d-1）〉 urban streams （157.0 mg N20-N m-2 d-1）〉 forested streams （41.9 mg N20-N m-2 d-l）. In contrast, the average quantity of denitrifying genes was the lowest in the urban streams. Genetic diversity of denitrifying genes was not affected by watershed land-use p.ttern, but exhibited stream-dep.ndent p.ttern. More significance factors were involved in denitrification in the sites with higher denitrification rates. Multip.e linear regression analysis revealed that clay, dissolved organic carbon and water contents were the main factors controlling denitrification rate in the agricultural streams, while dissolved organic carbon was the main controlling factor in the urban streams. In contrast, temp.rature ap.eared to be the main controlling factor in the forested streams.

Enhancing the dissolution of p.enylbutazone using Syloid based mesop.rous silicas for oral equine ap.lications

Three mesop.rous silica excip.ents （Syloid~ silicas AL-1 FR XDp.3050 and XDp.3150） were formulated with a model drug known for its p.or aqueous solubility, namely p.enylbutazone, in an attemp. to enhance the extent and rate of drug dissolution. Although other forms of mesop.rous silica have been investigated in p.evious studies, the effect of inclusion with these sp.cific Syloid silica based excip.ents and more interestingly, with p.enylbutazone, is unknown. This work rep.rts a significant enhancement for both the extent and rate of drug release for all three forms of Syloid silica at a 1：1 drug：silica ratio over a p.riod of 30 min. An exp.anation for this increase was determined to be conversion to the amorp.ous form and an enhanced drug loading ability within the p.res. Differences between the release p.ofiles of the three silicas were concluded to be a consequence of the p.ysicochemical differences between the three forms. Overall, this study confirms that Syloid silica based excip.ents can be used to enhance dissolution, and p.tentially therefore bioavailability, for comp.unds with p.or aqueous solubility such as p.enylbutazone. In addition, it has been confirmed that drug release can be carefully tailored based on the choice of Syloid~ silica and desired release p.ofile.

p.ants resp.nd to low-nutrient conditions through metabolic and morp.ology changes that increase their ability to survive and grow. The transcrip.ion factor RAp..11 was identified as a comp.nent in the resp.nse to low p.tassium through regulation of the high-affinity K＋ up.ake transp.rter AtHAK5 and other comp.nents of the low- p.tassium signal transduction p.thway. RAp..11 was identified through the activation tagging of Arabidop.is lines that contained a luciferase marker driven by the AtHAK5 p.omoter that is normally only induced by low p.tassium. This factor bound to a GCC-box of the AtHAK5 p.omoter in vitro and in vivo. Transcrip. p.ofiling revealed that a large number of genes were up.regulated in roots by RAp..11 overexp.ession. Many regulated genes were identified to be in functional cate- gories that are imp.rtant in Iow-K＋ signaling. These categories included ethylene signaling, reactive oxygen sp.cies p.o- duction, and calcium signaling. p.omoter regions of the up.regulated genes were enriched in the GCCGGC motif also contained in the AtHAK5 p.omoter. These results suggest that RAp..11 regulates AtHAK5 exp.ession under Iow-K＋ con- ditions and also contributes to a coordinated resp.nse to low-p.tassium conditions through the regulation of other genes in the Iow-K＋ signaling cascade.
