Evaluation of an erosion-sediment transport model for a hillslope using laboratory flume data

Climate change can escalate rainfall intensity and cause further increase in sediment transport in arid lands which in turn can adversely affect water quality. Hence, there is a strong need to predict the fate of sediments in order to provide measures for sound erosion control and water quality management. The presence of micro- topography on hillslopes influences processes of runoff generation and erosion, which should be taken into account to achieve more accurate modelling results. This study presents a physically based mathematical model for erosion and sediment transport coupled to one-dimensional overland flow equations that simulate rainfall-runoff generation on the rill and interrill areas of a bare hillslope. modelling effort at such a fine resolution considering the flow con- nection between Jnterrill areas and rills is rarely verified. The developed model was applied on a set of data gath- ered from an experimental setup where a 650 cm×136 cm erosion flume was pre-formed with a longitudinal rill and interrJll having a plane geometry and was equipped with a rainfall simulator that reproduces natural rainfall characteristics. The flume can be given both longitudinal and lateral slope directions. For calibration and validation, the model was applied on the experimental results obtained from the setup of the flume having 5% lateral and 10% longitudinal slope directions under rainfall intensities of 105 and 45 mm/h, respectively. Calibration showed that the model was able to produce good results based on the R2 （0.84） and NSE （0.80） values. The model performance was further tested through validation which also produced good statistics （R2=0.83, NSE=0.72）. Results in terms of the sedigraphs, cumulative mass curves and performance statistics suggest that the model can be a useful and an important step towards verifying and improving mathematical models of erosion and sediment transport.

Postoperative adjunctive bevacizumab versus placebo in primary trabeculectomy surgery for glaucoma

AIm: To compare the effectiveness of postoperative adjunctive use of subconjunctival bevacizumab in altering the outcome of primary trabeculectomy in terms of sustained lowering of intraocular pressure(IOP) and reduction of postoperative bleb vascularization and ***: A prospective, one center, randomized, placebo-control study. Fifty-nine patients(59 eyes) with uncontrolled IOP under maximal tolerated medical treatment(mTmT) were recruited. A primary trabeculectomy with mitomycin C(mmC) was done and the patients were randomized to either postoperative subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab(1.25 mg/0.05 mL) or balanced salt solution(BSS). Forty-seven patients(47 eyes) completed at least one year of follow up and were included in the study. The main outcome measure was the IOP, and secondary outcome measures include bleb morphology, vascularization, and fibrosis, as well as the need for glaucoma medications and 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) ***: At 1-year follow up, there was no significant difference between groups for IOP(P=0.65), bleb morphology(P=0.65), and the need for glaucoma medications(P=0.65) or 5-FU needling requirements(P=0.11). However, the bevacizumab group had a higher rate of success results, lower use of glaucoma medications after surgery, and optimal bleb aspect in more patients, but more 5-FU needling procedures required. CONCLUSION: A bigger sample size is needed in order to determine whether the differences found in the bevacizumab group are statistically significant.

The therapeutic promise of small interfering RNAs （siRNAs） for specific gene silencing is dependent on the successful delivery of functional siRNAs to the cytoplasm. Their conjugation to an established delivery platform, such as gold nanoparticles, offers tremendous potential for treating diseases and advancing our understanding of cellular processes. Their success or failure is dependent on both the uptake of the nanoparticles into the cells and subsequent intracellular release of the functional siRNA. In this study, utilizing gold nanoparticle siRNA-mediated delivery against C-mYC, we aimed to determine if we could achieve knockdown in a cancer cell line with low levels of intracellular glutathione, and determine the influence, if any, of polyethylene glycol （PEG） ligand density on knockdown, with a view to determining the optimal nanoparticle design to achieve C-mYC knockdown. We demonstrate that, regardless of the PEG density, knockdown in cells with relatively low glutathione levels can be achieved, as well as the possible effect of steric hindrance of PEG on the availability of the siRNA for cleavage in the intracellular environment. Gold nanoparticle uptake was demonstrated via transmission electron microscopy and mass spectroscopy, while knockdown was determined at the protein and physiological levels （cells in S-phase） by in-cell westerns and BrdU incorporation, respectively.

Oxidative stress is a health condition that could potentially harm the patient, and it is defined as the lack of balance between the production of oxygen free radicals, which rises, and antioxidant defenses, which are in decrease. metabolic syndrome implies a variety of risk factors that are based on abdominal obesity and insulin resistance. moreover, the importance of metabolic syndrome is emphasized due to the fact that it presents an increase in oxidative stress, which is produced by the sum of alterations that each risk factor produces within the metabolic syndrome pathology. Reducing oxidative stress in these patients is currently one of the most interesting challenges of cardiovascular and metabolic therapeutics, because it is a molecular biology alteration that is not generally diagnosed and, therefore, not treated. The increasing incidence of overweight and obesity cause an increase in the incidence of metabolic syndrome, thus turning into a huge problem that keeps growing at alarming proportions. This syndrome＇s incidence oscillates between 20 and 40%, depending on the gender, age, ethnic group, and diagnostic criteria used for the definition of the disease. Prospective studies show that metabolic syndrome doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease and causes a five-fold increase in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. With the aim of decreasing the oxidative stress caused by metabolic syndrome, we investigated the effect of antioxidant protection in DNA repair and cell membranes through the use of blueberry extract, which is the fruit with the highest antioxidant capacity, in patients with metabolic syndrome. Thirty patients were studied for a period of 6 months of intervention, and it could be demonstrated that they showed a highly significant decrease in the damage produced to the DNA, which was measured by the urinary excretion of 8-hydroxy-2＇-deoxyguanosine （8-OHdG） and the damage caused to the vascular endothelium and cell membranes, which was meas

An Investigation on the Utilization of Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device among Women in Kabwe, Central Province

Introduction: Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is an effective long acting reversible contraceptive but its use is low. This study examined factors contributing to the utilization of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) among women in Kabwe Central Province. methodology: This was an analytical cross sectional study. Primary data was collected from 150 respondents in using simple random sampling method. Data was analysed using the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) version 22. Chi-square test was used to test associations among the dependent and independent variables. Logistic regression analysis was conducted. The confidence interval was set at 95% and significant level was at 0.05%. Findings: The study found that 44% of the respondents had high level of knowledge about IUCD. About 28% of the respondents, said that they used IUCD because it maintains menstrual bleeding, 26% said that they used because IUCD it does not cause infections, and 19% said that they used IUCD because it does not migrate to other body parts. majority (81%) of the respondents agreed with a statement that age contributes to underutilization of IUCD. About 77% of the respondents agreed with a statement that marital status contributes to underutilization of IUCD and 75% agreed with a statement that, education level contributes to underutilization of IUCD and was significant. Furthermore, 91% of the respondents agreed with a statement that lack of knowledge about IUCD contributes to underutilization of IUCD and 74% agreed with a statement that religion contributes to underutilization of IUCD. Age (p = 0.003), marital status (p = 0.002), education level (p = 0.003), and employment status (p = 0.02), were found to have a significant relationship with the utilization of IUCD.
