Anodic aluminium oxide （AAOM） membranes were used for template growth of carbon nanotubes （CNT） inside their pores by chemical vapour deposition （CVD） of different hydrocarbons, in the absence of transition metal catalyst. A composite material, containing one nanotube for each channel, having the same length as the membrane thickness and the external diameter close to the diameter of the membrane holes, was obtained. Yield, selectivity, and quality of CNTs in terms of diameter （up to very thin CNT）, carbon order, length, arrangement （i.e. number of tubes for each channel）, purity, that are critical requisites for several applications were optimised by investigating the effect of changing the hydrocarbon feedstock gas, also in the presence of hydrogen. The samples produced using methane as a feedstock have a well ordered structure. The role of the alumina channels surface during the CNT growth has been investigated and its catalytic activity has been proved for the first time.

In orthopedics, tissue engineering approach using stem cells is a valid line of treatment for patients with bone defects. In this context, mesenchymal stromal cells of various origins have been extensively studied and continue to be a matter of debate. Although mesenchymal stromal cells from bone marrow are already clinically applied, recent evidence suggests that one may use mesenchymal stromal cells from extra-embryonic tissues, such as amniotic fluid, as an innovative andadvantageous resource for bone regeneration. The use of cells from amniotic fluid does not raise ethical problems and provides a sufficient number of cells without invasive procedures. Furthermore, they do not develop into teratomas when transplanted, a consequence observed with pluripotent stem cells. In addition, their multipotent differentiation ability, low immunogenicity, and anti-inflammatory properties make them ideal candidates for bone regenerative medicine. We here present an overview of the features of amniotic fluid mesenchymal stromal cells and their potential in the osteogenic differentiation process. We have examined the papers actually available on this regard, with particular interest in the strategies applied to improve in vitro osteogenesis. Importantly, a detailed understanding of the behavior of amniotic fluid mesenchymal stromal cells and their osteogenic ability is desirable considering a feasible application in bone regenerative medicine.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment（VA） tools for forest ecosystems and forest-dependent communities are important for making decisions and understanding the impact of climate change on both social and natural ***,the tools are poorly coordinated,making it difficult for policymakers to carry out VAs *** aim of this study was to analyze VA literature worldwide to find representative case studies in terms of methods and tools applied and which have been successful in performing VAs on forests and forest-dependent *** successful VA studies analyzed had common characteristics such as significant funding,data availability and technical *** additional characteristic was the development of an integrated approach that considered the vulnerability of both ecosystems and communities by combining qualitative and quantitative *** members and relevant stakeholders were significantly involved in a participatory process that concluded with the identification of adaptation *** case studies also revealed how policymakers need to choose suitable methods and tools to undertake efficient assessment of *** need to consider several aspects of the VA process such as subject matter,availability of resources,time and scale.

Hepatitis D virus(HDV)is a defective liver-tropic virus that needs the helper function of hepatitis B virus(HBV)to infect humans and *** is transmitted sexually or by a parenteral route,in co-infection with HBV or by super-infection in HBV chronic *** infection causes acute hepatitis that may progress to a fulminant form(7%-14%by super-infection and 2%-3%by HBV/HDV co-infection)or to chronic hepatitis(90%by HDV super-infection and 2%-5%by HBV/HDV co-infection),frequently and rapidly progressing to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Peg-interferon alfa the only recommended therapy,clears HDV in only 10%-20%of cases and,consequently,new treatment strategies are being *** endemicity progressively decreased over the 50 years from the identification of the virus,due to improved population lifestyles and economic levels,to the use of HBV nuclei(t)side analogues to suppress HBV replication and to the application of universal HBV vaccination *** changes are expected during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 pandemic,unfortunately towards increased endemicity due to the focus of healthcare towards coronavirus disease 2019 and the consequently lower possibility of screening and access to treatments,lower care for patients with severe liver diseases and a reduced impulse to the HBV vaccination policy.

Background:There is increasing interest in evaluating home-range overlap(or,otherwise,segregation)between bird species,and between or within bird populations,to inform spatial *** far,studies of home-range overlap typically make use of comparisons between pairs of individuals,populations or species,and return a matrix of pairwise overlaps(e.g.,percent overlaps).However,when the number of individuals,populations or species to be compared is elevated,an overlarge overlap matrix is difficult to interpret from an ecological ***:We propose here a new,conceptually simple and computationally efficient index(general overlap index;GOI)for the ready computation within GIS of home range overlap of an arbitrarily large number(i.e.,n≥2)of individuals,populations or *** the number of home ranges to be compared,GOI always returns a single score between 0 and *** a case study,we applied our index to 24,074 GPS points of 10 Lesser Kestrels(Falco naumanni)in order to estimate within-colony and between-colony overlaps in two neighboring colonies in Southern ***:Within-colony overlap was elevated for both colonies(96.41%at Cassano delle Murge,n=5 individuals;81.38%at Santeramo in Colle,n=5 individuals),while between-colony overlap was low(19.12%;n=2 colonies)and,after a randomization procedure,more spatially-segregated than expected by ***:Modern biotelemetry offers huge amounts of data describing the space use of animal *** use of intuitive and straightforward indices,like GOI,can be useful to promptly extract ecological information from such an amount of data(*** change in space use over successive years,evaluating the reliability of various home-range estimators).

Diabetic retinopathy:an inflammatory disease

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complex multifactorial disease and one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide. DR pathogenesis is still not completely understood and, even if studies performed in the past focused on microvascular dysfunction as the main event, growing body of scientific evidence has demonstrated an important role of inflammation and neurodegeneration in the onset and progression of DR. This review summarizes current literature on the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis and progression of DR. In particular, it focuses on clinical inflammatory biomarkers detectable with non-invasive retinal imaging, suggestive of a local inflammatory condition. Current available treatments are applicable only at advanced stages of disease, therefore, there is the need to detect biomarkers of subclinical or early DR that can help in DR management before irreversible damage occurs. A better understanding of inflammatory pathways involved in DR may permit to implement more specific and personalized therapeutic strategies and clinical biomarkers may be a helpful tool in the everyday clinical practice to direct the patient to the most appropriate treatment option.
