Improving wood volume predictions in dry tropical forest in the semi-arid Brazil

The volumetric variability of dry tropical forests in Brazil and the scarcity of studies on the subject show the need for the development of techniques that make it possible to obtain adequate and accurate wood volume *** this study,we analyzed a database of thinning trees from a forest management plan in the Contendas de SincoráNational forest,southwestern Bahia State,*** data set included a total of 300 trees with a trunk diameter ranging from 5 to 52 ***,validation and statistical selection of four volumetric models were *** to the difference in height values for the same diameter and the low correlation between both variables,we do not suggest models which only use the diameter at breast height(DBH)variable as a predictor because they accommodate the largest estimation *** comparing the best single entry model(Hohenald-Krenn)with the Spurr model(best fit model),it is noted that the exclusion of height as a predictor causes the values of 136.44 and 0.93 for Akaike information criterion(AIC)and adjusted determination coefficient(R2 adj),which are poorer than the second best model(Schumacher-Hall).Regarding the minimum sample size,errors in estimation(root mean square error(RMSE)and bias)of the best model decrease as the sample size increases,especially when a larger number of trees with DBH≥15.0 cm are randomly *** sampling by diameter class produces smaller volume prediction errors than random sampling,especially when considering all *** summary,the Spurr and Schumacher-Hall models perform *** models suggest that the total variance explained in the estimates is not less than 95%,producing reliable forecasts of the total volume with *** estimates indicate that the bias around the average is not greater than 7%.Our results support the decision to use regression methods to build models and estimate their parameters,seeking stratification strategies in diameter classes for the sample trees.

AIM To evaluate the sex-specific effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from Eugenia punicifolia(HEEP) leaves on gastric ulcer *** In this rat study involving males, intact(cycling) females, and ovariectomized females, gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicle, lansoprazole, or HEEP was administered for 14 d after ulcer induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment period. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the following in vivo and in vitro investigations were performed: macroscopic examination of the lesion area and organ weights, biochemical analysis, zymography, and evaluation of protein expression levels. Additionally, the concentration-dependent effect of HEEP was evaluated in terms of subacute toxicity and *** Compared to the vehicle, HEEP demonstrated a great healing capacity by substantially reducing the ulcerative lesion area in males(52.44%), intact females(85.22%), and ovariectomized females(65.47%), confirming that HEEP accelerates the healing of acetic acidinduced gastric lesions and suggesting that this effect is modulated by female sex hormones. The antiulcer effect of HEEP was mediated by prostaglandin E2 only in male rats. Overall, the beneficial effect of HEEP was the highest in intact females. Notably, HEEP promoted the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(intact vs ovariectomized females) and decreased the expression of Caspase-8 and Bcl-2(intact female vs male or ovariectomized female). Association of sleep quality with sociodemographic factors and lifestyle in adolescents from southern Brazil

Background Good sleep quality is an essential component for growth, development, and physical and mental health of the individual, in addition to being a positive indicator of health and well-being. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of poor sleep quality and to identify the association of poor sleep quality with sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, weight status, and associated aerobic fitness in adolescents. Methods This study included 1110 students aged 14–19 years from city of S?o José/SC, Brazil. Sleep quality of the subjects was assessed using a questionnaire and classified as adequate and low. Independent variables were gender, age, monthly household income, maternal education, school shift, global physical activity, proper diet, screen time, sleeping hours of full week, sleeping hours of weekdays, sleeping hours of weekends, weight status, and aerobic fitness. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and confidence intervals of 95%. Results Prevalence of poor sleep quality was 60.4%. More likely to have poor sleep quality were identified in female students (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.11–2.55), whose mothers had higher levels of education (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.20–1.73) and low aerobic fitness (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.02–3.19). Conclusion Adolescents who were most likely to report poor sleep quality were female, those whose mothers had a higher educational level and had low aerobic fitness. Students with sedentary risk behavior were less likely of reporting poor sleep quality.

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of mortality among cirrhotic patients, and current guidelines recommend single-treatment modalities according to patient and liver disease classifications. New studies have shown promising results from combining locoregional and systemic treatments, but most of them were limited to Child-Pugh A patients due to toxicity concerns. Aim: The objective of this study was to analyze survival rates of Child-Pugh A and B patients with intermediate HCC tumors treated with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) followed by full-dose sorafenib usage. Material and methods: a retrospective analysis of 37 cirrhotic patients (Child-Pugh A and B rates = 23/14) treated with TACE and TACE followed by sorafenib usage (17 and 20 patients, respectively). Results: The mean survival was 379 days in the combined treatment group and 151 days in the single-treatment group (p = 0.007). There were no differences in survival according to the Child-Pugh classification. Conclusions: sorafenib after TACE can be an option for selected cirrhotic patients with intermediate HCC tumors if this combined approach is cautiously performed on an individualized schedule. Our results suggest that the Child-Pugh classification should not be a limitation to this combined treatment.

This paper analyses robotic signals in the perspective of fractional dynamics and the pseudo phase plane （PPP）.It is shown that the spectra of several experimental signals can be approximated by trend lines whose slope characterizes their fractional *** the PPP reconstruction of each signal,the time lags are calculated through the fractal ***,to obtain a smooth PPP,the noisy signals are filtered through *** behavior of the spectra reveals a relationship with the fractal dimension of the PPP and the corresponding time delay.

A 74-year-old man with terminal chronic kidney disease, under hemodialysis and with residual diuresis, was admitted due to myalgia, arthralgia, fever and pyuria in the previous 10 days. The patient had a recent diagnosis of high-grade non-invasive bladder cancer and was doing weekly BCG intravesical administrations. The symptoms started three days before the fifth administration. He had done cefixime as an outpatient and started piperacillin-tazobactam on hospital admission, but the fever persisted, and there was no bacterial isolation in urine or blood culture. On the tenth and seventeenth day after the last BCG intravesical administration Mycobacterium bovis was still isolated in the urine culture. The diagnosis of BCGitis was made and treatment was started, with a good response. forty days after the last administration and under treatment, the culture remained positive for Mycobacterium bovis in the urine. We raise the question about the safety of BCG administration in patients with residual diuresis.

Multielement determination in orange juice by ICP-MS associated with data mining for the classification of organic samples

The aim of this study was to discriminate organic from conventional orange juice based on chemical elements and data mining applications.A comprehensive sampling of organic and conventional oranges was carried out in Borborema,state of Sao Paulo,*** fruits of the variety Valencia(Citrus sinensis(L.)Osbeck)budded on Rangpur lime(Citrus limonia Osbeck)were *** chemical elements were determined in 57 orange samples grown in organic and conventional *** order to classify these samples,data mining techniques(Support Vector Machine(SVM)and Multilayer Perceptron(MLP))were combined with feature selection(f-score and chi-squared).SVM with chi-squared had a better performance compared with the other techniques because it reached 93.00% accuracy using only seven chemical components(Cu,Cs,Zn,Al,Mn,Rb and Sr),and correctly classified 96.73% of the samples grown in an organic system.
