Anti-oxidation actions of curcumin in two forms of bed rest:oxidative stress serum and salivary markers

Antithrombotic treatment tailoring and risk score evaluation in elderly patients diagnosed with an acute coronary syndrome

Age is an important prognostic factor in the outcome of acute coronary syndromes （ACS）. A substantial percentage of patients who ex- perience ACS is more than 75 years old, and they represent the fastest-growing segment of the population treated in this setting. These pa- tients present different patterns of responses to pharmacotherapy, namely, a higher ischemic and bleeding risk than do patients under 75 years of age. our aim was to identify whether the currently available ACS ischemic and bleeding risk scores, which has been validated for the general population, may also apply to the elderly population. The second aim was to determine whether the elderly benefit more from a spe- cific pharmacological regimen, keeping in mind the numerous molecules of antiplatelet and antithrombotic drugs, all validated in the general population. We concluded that the GRace （Global Registry of Acute Coronary events） risk score has been extensively validated in the elderly. However, the CRUSADe （Can Rapid risk stratification of Unstable angina patients Suppress ADverse outcomes with early imple- mentation of the ACC/AHA Guidelines） bleeding score has a moderate correlation with outcomes in the elderly. Until now, there have not been head-to-head scores that quantify the ischemic versus hemorrhagic risk or scores that use the same end point and timeline （e.g., ischemic death rate versus bleeding death rate at one month）. We also recommend that the frailty score be considered or integrated into the current existing scores to better quantify the overall patient risk. With regard to medical treatment, based on the subgroup analysis, we identified the drugs that have the least adverse effects in the elderly while maintaining optimal efficacy.

Antiprotozoal Activity of a <i>Thymus vulgaris</i>Methanol extract and Its Fractions

Introduction: Thymus vulgaris is used in traditional medicine to treat gastrointestinal diseases because of its antifungal, antibacterial, and antispasmodic activity. objective: To verify whether Thymus vulgaris also has antiprotozoal activity against Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia and entamoeba histolytica trophozoites. Materials and methods: Conventional cultures of parasites were measured on the third day during the logarithmic growth phase. The antiprotozoal activity of the methanol extract and its fractions were evaluated comparing growth in cultures with and without extracts. Next, the extract was fractionated by polarity-based partitioning. Then, the purity of each fraction was determined by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The percentage of growth inhibition was calculated with respect to untreated controls. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of each extract was calculated by PRoBIT analysis. Results: We found that a methanol extract of the aerial parts of Thymus vulgaris, at 300 μg/mL, inhibited the in vitro growth of G. lamblia and T. vaginalis, while e. histolytica growth was poorly inhibited. The methanol extract was further separated into mixtures of ursolic, oleanolic, and betulinic acids. The IC50 values of ursolic acid against G. lamblia and T. vaginalis were 8.12 μg/mL and 5.51 μg/mL, respectively. Conclusions: The methanol extract fraction containing ursolic acid obtained from Thymus vulgaris has antiprotozoal activity against G. lamblia and T. vaginalis trophozoites.

occurrence and Distribution of the Genus Jania J. V. Lamouroux (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) in the Pacific Coast of Baja California and Gulf of California, Mexico

This paper provides a description of the articulated species of the Tribe Janieae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) in the Pacific coast of Baja California and Gulf of California, Mexico. This taxonomic report is based on newly collected data in the study area and material currently housed at several herbaria. As a result of the present study, the record of the tribe Janieae is represented at the Pacific coast of Mexico for one genus: Jania J. V. Lamouroux with nine species. Morphological, reproductive and anatomical descriptions are provided in detail. In addition, keys for determination are included, as well as habitat, nomenclature, comparisons with other species and information on distribution. Instead of eleven species of Jania currently recorded for the study area, we recognize only nine. Jania verrucosa is restricted to the occidental coast from the Peninsula of Baja California. The remainder of the species commonly occurs in the Gulf of California and the Pacific coast of Baja California’s Peninsula. on the other hand, the gametangial thalli of J. adhaerens and tetrasporangial conceptacle in J. longiarthra are reported for the first time in Mexico.

Microarray analysis of gene expression in the liver of transgenic mouse model of HCV infection

Background: The molecular interactions of hepatitis C virus (HCV) with hepatic tissue have yet to be completely elucidated and understood. The purpose of this study was to compare differential gene expression patterns in the livers of non-transgenic and transgenic mouse model expressing HCV structural proteins Core, envelope 1 (e1) and envelope 2 (e2) using complementary DNA (cDNA) microarrays. Results: Total RNA extracted from the livers of HCV transgenic and non-transgenic mice was analyzed with cDNA microarray and differentially expressed genes confirmed by real-time RT-PCR. Relative expression ratios of individual genes were determined by comparing hybridization of Cy5-labelled cDNA from transgenic mouse livers and Cy3-labelled cDNA from non-transgenic mouse livers. The spot array images were quantified using QuantArray software and the outlier spots was normalized and filtered using five different criteria. 15,297 genes were analyzed using three different analytical methods. Depending on these methods, twenty-one genes were found to be differentially expressed at a statistically significant level. From these, 6 genes had a consistent differential expression. Several genes were directly involved in lipid metabolism and lipid β-oxidation. 5-azacytidine induced gene 2 (AZ2), which is involved in the methylation of genes was down regulated in HCV transgenic mice. Altered transcript levels of these 6 genes were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR analysis. Conclusion: Interactions between HCV and hepatocytes not only involve lipid metabolism and redox balance, but this interaction may also influence DNA methylation, indicating a potential association with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

The complete understanding of the growing catalog of regulatory non-coding RNAs is going to shed light in different aspects of a wide range of pathogenic mechanisms in human diseases. This review was aimed to highlight recent advances in the small non- coding RNA world that could have implications in the development of new strategies in medical sciences. Among the diverse group of small non-coding RNAs, we highlight the group of tRNA-derived fragments as molecules known for a long time which have recently emerged as novel regulators influencing several aspects of cell biology. We describe here recent advances in the field of tRNA-derived fragments playing key roles in the biology of some infectious agents, including e. coli, A. fumigatus, G. lamblia, Ascaris, T. cruzi, Virus, Prions and a brief overview linking them to cancer biology. Additionally, we focus on the potential implications of these molecules in future biotechnological applications in the development of new biomarkers and as new therapeutic targets.

Performances of an Active Target GeM-Based TPC for the AMADeUS experiment

In this paper, we present the R & D activity on a new GeM-based Time Projection Chamber (GeM-TPC) detector for the inner region of the AMADeUS experiment, which is aiming to perform measurements of low-energy negative kaon interactions in nuclei at the DAΦNe e+ e- collider at LNF-INFN. A novel idea of using a GeM-TPC as a low mass target and detector at the same time comes motivated by the need of studying the low energy interactions of K- with nuclei in a complete way, tracking and identifying all of the produced particles. even more, what makes the experimental proposal revolutionary is the possibility of using different gaseous targets without any other substantial intervention on the experimental setup, making it a flexible multipurpose device. This new detection technique applied to the nuclear physics requires the use of low-radiation length materials and very pure light gases such as Hydrogen, Deuterium, Helium-3, Helium-4, etc. In order to evaluate the GeM-TPC performances, a 10 × 10 cm2 prototype with a drift gap of 15 cm has been realized. The detector was tested at the πM1 beam facility of the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) with low momentum pions and protons. Detection efficiency and spatial resolution, as a function of gas mixture, gas gain and ionazing particle, are reported and discussed.

Synthesis of ZnS:Tm<sup>3+</sup>Nanoparticles by the Polyol Method

In this work, the synthesis of undoped and Tm-doped ZnS nanoparticles is successfully carried out by the polyol method. From XRD analyses, it was confirmed that both types of particles possess the cubic zinc blend structure of the ZnS, and that the structure is not altered by doping. The crystallite size computed by the Scherrer equation is about 9 ± 1 nm. From photoluminescence analyses, the results show that the excitation spectrum has two excitation peaks at 304 nm and 356 nm;by exciting at 304 nm, a strong blue emission is observed at 420 nm, while exciting at 356 nm the characteristic Tm transition 1G4 → 3H6 is observed at 417 nm. By doping with Tm ions, the emission color changes from pure blue to sky according to the change in CIe coordinates from x = 0.15, y = 0.015 to x = 0.18, y = 0.17, respectively.
