The paper is based on a study whose objective is to provide an understanding of the extent to which traditional knowledge and indigenous institutions for natural resource governance remain relevant to solving current land degradation issues and how they are integrated in formal policy process in Kilimanjaro Region. Data collection for this study combined qualitative and quantitative methods. A total of 221 individuals from households were interviewed using a structured questionnaire;41 in-depth interviews and 24 focus group discussions were held. Findings indicate that the community acknowledges that there is traditional knowledge and indigenous institutions regarding sustainable land management. However, awareness of the traditional knowledge and practices varied between districts. Rural-based districts were found to be more aware and therefore practiced more of traditional knowledge than urban based districts. Variations in landscape features such as proneness to drought, landslides and soil erosion have also attracted variable responses among the communities regarding traditional knowledge and indigenous practices of sustainable land management. In addition, men were found to have more keen interest in conserving the land than women as well as involvement in other traditional practices of sustainable land management. This is due to the fact that, customarily, it is men who inherit and own land. This, among other factors, could have limited the integration of traditional knowledge and indigenous institutions in village by-laws and overall policy process. The paper concludes by recommending that traditional knowledge and indigenous institutions for sustainable land management should be promoted among the younger generations so as to capture their interest, and ensure that successful practices are effectively integrated into the national policies and strategies.

99mTc-methylene diphosphonate （99mTc-mDP） is widely used in clinical settings to detect bone abnormalities. However, the mechanism of 99mTc-mDP uptake in bone is not well elucidated. In this study, we utilized a mouse tibia injury model, single-photon emission computed tomography （gamma scintigraphy or SPECT）, ex vivo micro-computed tomography, and histology to monitor 99mTc-mDP uptake in injury sites during skeletal healing. In an ex vivo culture system, calvarial cells were differentiated into osteoblasts with osteogenic medium, pulsed with 99mTc-mDP at different time points, and quantitated for 99mTc-mDP uptake with a gamma counter. We demonstrated that 99mTc-mDP uptake in the injury sites corresponded to osteoblast generation in those sites throughout the healing process. The 99mTc-mDP uptake within the injury sites peaked on day 7 post-injury, while the injury sites were occupied by mature osteoblasts also starting from day 7. ~mTc-mDP uptake started to decrease 14 days post-surgery, when we observed the highest level of bony tissue in the injury sites. We also found that 99mTc-mDP uptake was associated with osteoblast maturation and mineralization in vitro. This study provides direct and biological evidence for 99mTc-mDP uptake in osteoblasts during bone healing in vivo and in vitro.

magnesium-ion-conducting solid polymer electrolytes have been studied for rechargeable mg metal batteries,one of the beyond-Li-ion *** this paper,magnesium polymer electrolytes with magnesium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide(mg(TFSI)2)salt in poly(ε-caprolactone-co-trimethylene carbonate)(PCL-PTmC)were investigated and compared with the poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)*** thermal properties and vibrational spectroscopy indicated that the total ion conduction in the PEO electrolytes was dominated by the anion conduction due to strong polymer coordination with fully dissociated mg2+.On the other hand,in PCL-PTmC electrolytes,there is relatively weaker polymer–cation coordination and increased anion–cation *** mg-and F-rich particles were observed on the Cu electrodes after polarization tests in Cu|mg cells with PCL-PTmC electrolyte,suggesting that mg was conducted in the ion complex form(mgxTFSIy)to the copper working electrode to be reduced which resulted in anion ***,the mg metal deposition/stripping was not favorable with either mg(TFSI)2 in PCL-PTmC or mg(TFSI)2 in PEO,which inhibited quantitative analysis of magnesium conduction.A remaining challenge is thus to accurately assess transport numbers in these systems.

The profile of polypeptides separated by SDS-PAGE from seed of major crop species such as pea (Pisum sativum) is complex, resulting from cleavage (processing) of precursors expressed from multiple copies of genes encoding vicilin and legumin, the major storage globulins. Translation in vitro of mRNAs hybridselected from mid-maturation pea seed RNAs by defined vicilin and legumin cDNA clones provided precursor molecules that were cleaved in vitro by a cell-free protease extract obtained from similar stage seed; the derived polypeptides were of comparable sizes to those observed in vivo. The feasibility of transcribing mRNA in vitro from a cDNA clone and cleavage in vitro of the derived translation products was established for a legumin clone,providing a method for determining polypeptide products of an expressed sequence. This approach will also be useful for characterising cleavage site requirements since modifications an readily be introduced at the DNA level.

The reducing efficiencies of the commonly used heat treatment methods and fermentation processes on aflatoxin m1 (AFm1) in Nigeria were investigated. Seventy samples of fresh cow milk from both conventional and traditional dairy cattle herds were collected and analyzed for the determination of AFm1 using Cobra-cell incorporated high performance liquid chromatography. Of these analyzed samples, 56 (80.0%) tested positive for AFm1 out of which 3 milk samples with high AFm1 concentrations were selectively pooled and subjected to varied conditions of heat treatments and fermentation processes using both indigenized and exotic strains of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus + Streptococcus thermophilus and L. rhamnosus and L. plantarum) as starter cultures respectively. Both processes used either singly or combined, demonstrated high degrees of reducing effects on AFm1 levels. Sterilization of the milk at 121?C and 80?C under the same condition of time (15 - 20) min showed significant reduction of up to 58.8% (p 0.05) in the level of AFm1 when compared with the initial mean AFm1 concentration of the untreated fresh milk. The situation was however different around the boiling temperature of 100?C at which point the level of AFm1 reduction was found to be inconsistent. The indigenized combined strains showed some slight margins of AFm1 reduction in the proportions of (20.5, 30.8 and 43.9)% over and above that of the exotic strains (17.4, 30.0 and 41.1)% in 12 h, 48 h and 72 h of fermentation respectively. Generally, fermentation alone showed lower reduction of AFm1 in milk from 24.5% to 43.9% compared with the reducing activities of (35.4 to 58.8)% when heat-treated milk samples were subsequently subjected to varied fermentation conditions.

Background: Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) syndrome is a rare congenital condition of the female urogenital tract, presenting intraoperative challenges. We demonstrate the utility of three dimensional intraoperative ultrasound to better delineate anatomy and aid in optimal resection of the vaginal septum. Case: A 12-year-old female was referred to pediatric and adolescent gynecology for irregular periods and evaluation of her gynecologic organs. Imaging studies confirmed OHVIRA syndrome. She underwent uncomplicated vaginal septum resection, guided by three dimensional intraoperative ultrasound. Summary and Conclusion: Intraoperative ultrasound can better delineate challenging anatomy. We show that three dimensional intraoperative ultrasound offers significant advantages over traditional two dimensional ultrasound and is a supplement to MRI, which may be helpful in complex anatomical cases like OHVIRA syndrome.
