Background Individuals homozygous for the T allele of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism have higher plasma homocysteine concentrations (the phenotype) than those with the CC genotype, which, if pathogenetic, should put them at increased risk of stroke. Since this polymorphism is distributed randomly during gamete formation, its association with stroke should not be biased or confounded. We investigated consistency between the expected odds ratio for stroke among TT homozygotes, extrapolated from genotype - phenotype and phenotype- disease studies, and the observed odds ratio from a meta- analysis of genotype- disease association studies. Methods We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE up to june, 2003, for all relevant studies on the association between homocysteine concentration and the MTHFR polymorphism, and until December, 2003, for those on the association between the polymorphism and the risk of stroke. pooled odds ratios and 95% CI were calculated by random- effects and fixed- effects models. Consistency between expected and observed odds ratios was assessed by interaction test. Findings 111 studies met the selection criteria. Among 15 635 people without cardiovascular disease, the weighted mean difference in homocysteine concentration between TT and CC homozygotes was 1.93 μ mol/L (95% CI 1.38 to 2.47). The expected odds ratio for stroke corresponding to this difference based on previous observational studies was 1.20 (1.10 to 1.31). In our genetic meta- analysis (n=13 928) the odds ratio for stroke was 1.26 (1.14 to 1.40) for TT versus CC homozygotes, similar to the expected odds ratio (p=0.29). Consistency between the odds ratios was preserved in analyses by age- group, ethnic background, and geographical location. Interpretation The observed increase in risk of stroke among individuals homozygous for the MTHFR T allele is close to that predicted from the differencesin homocysteine concentration conferred by this variant. The structural constants of an evolution algebra are given by a quadratic matrix. In this work we establish an equivalence between nil, right nilpotent evolution algebras and evolution algebras defined by upper triangular matrices. The classification of 2-dimensional complex evolution algebras is obtained. For an evolution algebra with a special form of the matrix, we describe all its isomorphisms and their compositions. We construct an algorithm running under Mathematica which decides if two finite dimensional evolution algebras are isomorphic.

Unsupervised machine learning to classify crystal structures according totheir structural distortion: A case study on Li-argyrodite solid-state electrolytes

High-throughput approaches in computational materials discovery often yield a combinatorial explosionthat makes the exhaustive rendering of complete structural and chemical spaces impractical. A commonbottleneck when screening new compounds with archetypal crystal structures is the lack of fast and reliabledecision-making schemes to quantitatively classify the computed candidates as inliers or outliers (too distortedstructures). Machine learning-aided workflows can solve this problem and make geometrical optimizationprocedures more efficient. However, for this to occur, there is still a lack of appropriate combinations ofsuitable geometrical descriptors and accurate unsupervised models which are capable of accurately differentiating between systems with subtle structural changes. Here, considering as a case study the compositionalscreening of cubic Li-argyrodites solid electrolytes, we tackle this problem head on. We find that Steinhardtorder parameters are very accurate descriptors of the cubic argyrodite structure to train a range of commonunsupervised outlier detection models. And, most importantly, the approach enables us to automatically classifycrystal structures with uncertainty control. The resulting models can then be used to screen computed structureswith respect to an user-defined error threshold and discard too distorted structures during geometricaloptimization procedures. Implemented as a decision node in computer-aided materials discovery workflows,this approach can be employed to perform autonomous high-throughput screening methods and make the useof computational and data storage resources more efficient.

Hyperparameter optimization of YOLOv8 for smoke and wildfire detection:Implications for agricultural and environmental safety

Avian responses to an extreme weather event:The case of the‘Filomena’snowstorm in Madrid(central Spain)

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their *** january 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected Spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central Spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a *** bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood pigeon(Columba palumbus),Eurasian Magpie(pica pica)and Red-legged partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by *** suggest that in response to Filomena,pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home *** results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

Geological inferences about the upper crustal configuration of the Medellin-Aburra Valley(Colombia)using strong motion seismic records

In regions of complex geology and tectonic assembly, strong motion seismic arrival time records can be used to test the plausibility of existing hypothesis about the origin of lithological and tectonic features and how they are related in space and time. In this study we use differential travel time residuals at some strong motion accelerographic stations in the Medellin-Aburra Valley, in the northern Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, to discuss some aspects of the geological configuration. We based our work on the hypothesis that the differences between seismic travel time residuals among pairs of stations are a function of the differences in the surface geology and the near-surface upper crustal configuration. Our results are consistent with the volcanic rocks of the Quebradagrande Complex being less mafic, more weathered or more tectonically affected than previously thought, with the presence of a relatively thin dunite body on top of the metamorphic basement, and with a large lateral heterogeneity in the mainly mafic San Diego Stock.

Generalized algorithms for particle motion and collision with streambeds

Recent theoretical and numerical models for the motion of saltating particles close to stream beds are constituted of three sub-models: a) a set of equations describing the particle "free flight", b) a sub-model to calculate the post-collision particle velocity, and c) a mathematical representation of the bed roughness. In this paper, a comprehensive three-dimensional(3-D), theoretical/numerical model for bedload motion at large Reynolds numbers is presented. By using geometric considerations and stochastic parameters to characterize collisions with the wall, five new sub-models for representation of bed roughness are, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, proposed and implemented. The emphasis of this paper is on the particle model, for which Basset, Magnus, drag, submerged weight, virtual mass,and lift forces are included. For the range of particle sizes(sands) analyzed herein, it is found that the stream-wise contribution of the Basset force, compared to other forces, may be as large as 60%. Whereas in the wall-normal direction, the Basset force is equally important as the drag force, and it is exceeded only by the submerged weight. It is also found that the best agreement between numerical and experimental results in terms of jump length, jump height, and stream-wise particle velocity is achieved for restitution and friction coefficients of 0.65 and 0.1, respectively. Important conclusions are obtained regarding the lack of realistic prediction with available "roughness" models with small ranges of angles.

Response to vernalization and photoperiod are the main determinants controlling the time to flowering in temperate cereals. While the individual genes that determine a plant's response to these environmental signals are well characterized, the combinatorial effect on flowering time of allelic variants for multiple genes remains unresolved. This study investigated the genetic control of flowering-time in a biparental population of spring barley, derived from a wide cross between a late-flowering European and an early-flowering North-American cultivar. While the major flowering time genes are not segregating in the Beka ×Logan cross, large variation in flowering was observed. We identified five QTL, with both parents found to contribute early alleles. The catalog of QTL discovered aligns with several candidate genes affecting flowering time in barley. The combination of particular alleles at HvCEN, HvELF3 and HvFT1 in Logan are responsible for the earliness of this cultivar. Interestingly, earliness for flowering could be further enhanced, with Beka found to contribute three early alleles, including a QTL colocating with a HvFD-like gene, suggesting that there are diverse aspects of the flowering-time pathway that have been manipulated in these two cultivars. Epistatic interactions between flowering-time QTL or candidate genes were observed in field data and confirmed under controlled conditions. The results of this study link photoperiod-dependent flowering-time genes with earliness per se genes into a single model, thus providing a unique framework that can be used by geneticists and breeders to optimize flowering time in barley.
