A new database of building-space-specific internal loads and load schedules for performance based code compliance modeling of commercial buildings

Building-level loads and load schedules prescribed by current modeling rules save modelers time and provide standards during whole building performance ***,recent studies show that they sometimes insufficiently capture the entire building performance due to the varied loads and load schedules for different space *** a solution to this issue,this paper presents a database of default building-space-specific loads and load schedules for use in energy modeling,and in particular code compliance modeling for commercial *** existing sets of default loads and load schedules are reviewed and the challenges behind using them for specific research topics are ***,the proposed method to develop the building-space-specific loads and load schedules is *** that,the database for these building-space-specific loads and load schedules is *** addition,one case is studied to demonstrate the applications of these loads and load *** this case study,three methods are used to develop building energy models:space-specific(using knowledge of the distribution and location of space types and applying the space-specific data in the developed database),building-level(assuming a lack of knowledge of the space types and using the building-level data in the developed database),and calculated-ratio(assuming knowledge of the distribution of space types but not their locations and calculating weighted average values based on the space-specific data in the developed database).The energy results simulated by using these three methods are compared,which shows building-level methods can produce significantly different absolute energy and energy savings results than the results using space-specific ***,this paper discusses the application scope and maintenance of this new database.

Management of malignant colon polyps:Current status and controversies

Colon cancer remains a significant clinical problem worldwide and in the United States it is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and *** is generally accepted that most malignant neoplasms of the colon arise from precursor adenomatous *** stepwise progression of normal epithelium to carcinoma,often with intervening dysplasia,occurs as a result of multiple sequential,genetic mutations-some are inherited while others are *** polyps are defined by the presence of cancer cells invading through the muscularis mucosa into the underlying submucosa(T1).They can appear benign endoscopically but the presence of malignant invasion histologically poses a difficult and often controversial clinical *** should be initially focused on the endoscopic assessment of these *** polyps should be resected en-bloc,if possible,to facilitate thorough evaluation by *** these cases,proper attention must be given to the risks of residual cancer in the bowel wall or in the surrounding lymph *** resection is not feasible endoscopically,thenthese patients should be referred for surgical *** review will discuss the important prognostic features of malignant polyps that will most profoundly affect this risk ***,we will discuss effective strategies for their overall management.

Quantifying spatiotemporal variability in occupant exposure to an indoor airborne contaminant with an uncertain source location

Effectiveness of hand self-shiatsu to improve sleep following sport-related concussion in young athletes: a proof-of-concept study

Objective: The prevalence of sport-related concussion(SRC) is high and results in a number of serious health consequences. One area that has received minimal research is the relationship between SRC and sleep. The literature shows that sleep deficiency is a frequent negative consequence of SRC. At the same time, sleep deficiency delays recovery from SRC and contributes added risk of symptom recurrence.A 2014 study of chronic pain patients who learned to apply the complementary and alternative medicine intervention hand self-shiatsu(HSS) had promising, sleep-promoting results that warrant further investigation with other populations. This proof-of-concept study explored the feasibility of HSS as an intervention to promote sleep onset and continuity for young adults with ***: This study employed a prospective case-series design, where participants act as their own controls. Baseline and follow-up data included standardized self-reported assessment tools and sleep ***: Seven athletes, aged between 18 and 25 years, participated in the study. Although statistically significant improvement in actigraphy sleep scores between baseline and follow-up was not achieved,metrics for sleep quality and daytime fatigue showed significant ***: These findings support the hypothesis that HSS has the potential to improve sleep and reduce daytime fatigue in young postconcussion athletes. This pilot study provides guidance to refine research protocols and lays a foundation for further, large-sample, controlled studies.

Effect of rhizosphere on soil microbial community and in-situ pyrene biodegradation

To access the influence of a vegetation on soil microorganisms toward organic pollutant biogegration,this study examined the rhizospheric effects of four plant species(sudan grass,white clover,alfalfa,and fescue)on the soil microbial community and in-situ pyrene(PYR)*** results indicated that the spiked PYR levels in soils decreased substantially compared to the control soil without *** equal planted densities,the efficiencies of PYR degradation in rhizosphere with sudan grass,white clover,alfalfa and fescue were 34.0%,28.4%,27.7%,and 9.9%,***,on the basis of equal root biomass the efficiencies were in order of white clover..*** increased PYR biodegradation was attributed to the enhanced bacterial population and activity induced by plant roots in the *** microbial species and biomasses were elucidated in terms of microbial phospholipid ester-linked fatty acid(PLFA)*** principal component analysis(PCA)revealed significant changes in PLFA pattern in planted and non-planted soils spiked with *** PLFAs in planted soils were all higher than those in non-planted *** assemblages indicated that bacteria were the primary PYR degrading microorganisms,and that Gram-positive bacteria exhibited higher tolerance to PYR than Gram-negative bacteria did.

A novel process is demonstrated whereby dense arrays of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT)are grown directly at the interface of a carbon material or carbon *** growth process combines the concepts of SWNT tip growth and alumina-supported SWNT base growth to yield what we refer to as“odako”*** odako growth,an alumina fl ake detaches from the carbon surface and supports catalytic growth of dense SWNT arrays at the tip,leaving a direct interface between the carbon surface and the dense SWNT *** addition to being a new and novel form of SWNT array growth,this technique provides a route toward future development of many important applications for dense aligned SWNT arrays.

Thomson scattering (TS), as a popular and reliable diagnostic technique, has successfully measured electron temperatures and electron number densities of plasmas for many years. However, conventional TS techniques using Nd:YAG lasers operate only at tens of hertz. Here, we present the development of a high-repetition-rate TS instrument based on a high-speed, pulse-burst laser system to greatly increase the temporal resolution of measurements. Successful instrument prototype testing was carried out by collecting TS light from laboratory helium and argon plasmas at 10 kHz. Calibration of the instrument detection sensitivity using nitrogen/ oxygen rotational Raman scattering signal is also presented. Quantitative electron number densities and electron temperatures of the plasma were acquired at 10 kHz, for stable plasma discharges as, respectively,~0.9 eV and ~5.37×10^21 m^-3 for the argon plasma, and ~1 eV and ~6.5×10^21 m^-3 for the helium plasma.

Akt isoforms differentially provide for chemoresistance in prostate cancer

Hand self-Shiatsu for sleep problems in p ersons with chronic pain: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE： Difficulty falling asleep （sleep latency） and staying asleep （sleep maintenance） are common problems for persons living with pain. Research demonstrates that sleep problems are, in turn, related to exacerbation of chronic pain. There is a growing body of evidence for a range of pragmatic, non-pharmacological sleep interventions that can potentially be incorporated into pain management programs. This study looks at the outcome of teaching patients with musculoskeletal pain standardized pre-bedtime hand self-Shiatsu （HSS） to reduce sleep latency. METHODS： A case series design, with participants acting as their own controls, was selected to facilitate hypothesis generation for this novel, under-researched intervention. Sleep efficiency, latency and maintenance, sleep beliefs, pain intensity and basic participant demographics were collected at baseline with actigraphy and standardized self-report questionnaires. After one week of baseline data collection, the HSS intervention was taught to participants. Follow-up data were collected at 2 and 8 weeks post-intervention. RESULTS： Data collected at baseline and the two follow-up periods revealed no apparent changes in the objective actigraphy data. However a trend toward improved self-reported sleep latency （time to fall asleep） and sleep duration （time spent asleep） emerged. A number of participants reported they were more concerned with increasing their period of unbroken sleep as opposed to their total sleep time and it is possible that HSS may be useful to be applied during nighttime awakenings as well as before bed. None of the participants reported adverse effects of the intervention. CONCLUSION： These preliminary findings are promising and future studies exploring the mechanism of action and with stronger control of treatment fidelity are indicated.
