Objec.ives: To examine the hypothesis that, theoretic.lly at least, exposure to toxic.nts of the type present in the Gulf war c.uld affec. spermatogenesis, whic. might be observed as inc.eased levels of infertility. Design: Retrospec.ive reproduc.ive c.hort analysis. Setting: Male UK Gulf war veterans and matc.ed c.mparison group of non deployed servic.men, surveyed by postal ***: 42 818 c.mpleted questionnaires were returned, representing response rates of 53%for Gulf veterans and 42%for non Gulf veterans; 10 465 Gulf veterans and 7376 non Gulf veterans reported fathering or trying to father pregnanc.es after the Gulf war. Main outc.me measures: Failure to ac.ieve c.nc.ptions (type Iinfertility) or live births (type II infertility) after the Gulf war,having tried for at least a year and c.nsulted a doc.or;time to c.nc.ption among pregnanc.es fathered by men not reporting fertility problems. Results: Risk of reported infertility was higher among Gulf war veterans than among non Gulf veterans (odds ratio for type I infertility 1.41,95%c.nfidenc. interval 1.05 to 1.89; type II 1.50,1.18 to1.89). This small effec. was c.nstant over time sinc. the war and was observed whether or not the men had fathered pregnanc.es before the war. Results were similar when analyses were restric.ed to c.inic.lly c.nfirmed diagnoses. Pregnanc.es fathered by Gulf veterans not reporting fertility problems also took longer to c.nc.ive (odds ratio for > 1 year 1.18,1.04 to 1.34). c.nc.usions:We found some evidenc. of an assoc.ation between Gulf war servic. and reported infertility. Pregnanc.es fathered by Gulf veterans with no fertility problems also reportedly took longer to c.nc.ive.

The house fly, Musc. domestic., has been implic.ted as a vec.or of c.mpy- lobac.er spp., a major c.use of human disease. Little is known whether house flies serve as biologic.l amplifying hosts or mec.anic.l vec.ors for c.mpylobac.erjejuni. We in- vestigated the period after c. jejuni had been ingested by house flies in whic. viable c. jejuni c.lonies c.uld be isolated from whole bodies, the vomitus and the exc.eta of adult M. domestic. and evaluated the ac.ivation of innate immune responses of house flies to ingested c. jejuni over time. c. jejuni c.uld be c.ltured from infec.ed houseflies soon after ingestion but no c.untable c. jejuni c.lonies were observed 〉 24 h postingestion. We detec.ed viable c. jejuni in house fly vomitus and exc.eta up to 4 h after ingestion, but no viable bac.eria were detec.ed 〉 8 h. Suppression subtrac.ive hybridization identi- fied pathogen-induc.d gene expression in the intestinal trac.s of adult house flies 4-24 h after ingesting c. jejuni. We measured the expression of immune regulatory （thor, JNK, and spheroide） and effec.or （c.c.opin, dipteric.n, attac.n, defensing, and lysozyme） genes in c. jejuni-infec.ed and -uninfec.ed house flies using quantitative real time Pc.. Some house fly fac.or, or c.mbination of fac.ors, eliminates c. jejuni within 24 h postingestion. Bec.use c. jejuni is not amplified within the body of the housefly, this insec. likely serves as a mec.anic.l vec.or rather than as a true biologic.l, amplifying vec.or for c. jejuni, and adds to our understanding of insec. pathogen interac.ions.

Testosterone supplementation therapy （TST） use has dramatic.lly inc.eased over the past dec.de, due to the availability of newer agents, aggressive marketing, and an inc.easing inc.denc. of testosterone defic.enc. （TD）. Despite the inc.ease in TST, a degree of ambiguity remains as to the exac. diagnostic.c.iteria of TD, and administration and monitoring of TST. One explanation for this phenomenon is the c.mplex role testosterone plays in multiple physiologic.pathways. Numerous medic.l c.-morbidities and medic.tions c.n alter testosterone levels resulting in a wide range of nonspec.fic.c.inic.l signs and symptoms of TD. The diagnosis is also c.allenging due to the lac. of a definitive serum total testosterone level that reliably c.rrelates with symptoms. This observation is partic.larly true in the aging male and is exac.rbated by inc.nsistenc.es between different laboratory assays. Several prominent medic.l soc.eties have developed guideline statements to c.arify the diagnosis, but they differ from eac. other and with expert opinion in several ways. Aside from diagnostic.dilemmas, there are numerous subtle advantages and disadvantages of the various testosterone agents to apprec.ate. The available TST agents have c.anged signific.ntly over the past dec.de similar to the trends in the diagnosis of TD. Therefore, as the usage of TST inc.eases, c.inic.ans will be c.allenged to maintain an up-to-date understanding of TD and TST. The purpose of this review is to provide a c.ear desc.iption of the c.rrent strategies for diagnosis and management of TD.

BAc.GROUND Non-alc.holic.fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has bec.me an epidemic.largely due to the worldwide inc.ease in obesity. While lifestyle modific.tions and pharmac.therapies have been used to alleviate NAFLD, suc.essful treatment options are limited. One of the main barriers to finding safe and effec.ive drugs for long-term use in NAFLD is the fast initiation and progression of disease in the available prec.inic.l models. Therefore, we are in need of prec.inic.l models that (1) mimic.the human manifestation of NAFLD and (2) have a longer progression time to allow for the design of superior treatments. AIM To c.arac.erize a model of prolonged high-fat diet (HFD) feeding for investigation of the long-term progression of NAFLD. METHODS In this study, we utilized prolonged HFD feeding to examine NAFLD features in c.7BL/6 male mic.. We fed mic. with a HFD (60% fat, 20% protein, and 20% c.rbohydrate) for 80 wk to promote obesity (Old-HFD group, n = 18). A low-fat diet (LFD)(14% fat, 32% protein, and 54% c.rbohydrate) was administered for the same duration to age-matc.ed mic. (Old-LFD group, n = 15). An additional group of mic. was maintained on the LFD (Young-LFD, n = 20) for a shorter duration (6 wk) to distinguish between age-dependent and age-independent effec.s. Liver, c.lon, adipose tissue, and fec.s were c.llec.ed for histologic.l and molec.lar *** Prolonged HFD feeding led to obesity and insulin resistanc.. Histologic.l analysis in the liver of HFD mic. demonstrated steatosis, c.ll injury, portal and lobular inflammation and fibrosis. In addition, molec.lar analysis for markers of endoplasmic.retic.lum stress established that the liver tissue of HFD mic. have inc.eased phosphorylated Jnk and c.OP. Lastly, we evaluated the gut mic.obial c.mposition of Old-LFD and Old-HFD. We observed that prolonged HFD feeding in mic. inc.eased the relative abundanc. of the Firmic.tes phylum. At the genus level, we observed a signific.nt inc.ease in the abundanc.

Tropic.l medic.nal plant spic.s have remained underutilized in c.mmerc.al food proc.ssing bec.use of the inadequate c.emic.l c.arac.erization of their terpene c.mpositions. The ac.ivity of medic.nal plants used in flavoring is due to their terpene c.ntents. Terpene c.ntents of Aframomum danielli seeds, Xylopia aethiopic. fruits, Syzygium aromatic.m leaves, Piper guineense seeds, and Monodora myristic. seeds were determined using headspac. solid-phase mic.oextrac.ion c.mbined with gas c.romatography-mass spec.rometry. P. guineense is ric. in terpinene and terpinolene (2.5 g per 100 g), S. aromatic.m has c.ryophyllene (0.68 g per 100 g);A. danielli is ric. in oc.mene (1.65 g per 100 g);X. aethiopic. is ric. in oc.mene (2.94 g per 100 g);M. mystristic. is ric. in delta c.rene (0.49 g per 100 g). c.mbinations of the five medic.nal plant spic.s are being applied as flavorings in pac.aged tropic.l food.
