Objective Exposure to ad.ictive d.ugs triggers synaptic plasticity in reward.elated.brain regions, such as the mid.rain, nucleus accumbens, and.the prefrontal cortex. Effects of chronic d.ug exposure on other brain areas have not been fully investigated. Method. We characterize synaptic plasticity in motor cortex and.0}rsal striatum after methamphetamine self-ad.inistration in rats. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS)-ind.ced.motor evoked.potentials to explore the alteration of plasticity in human patients with methamphetamine ad.iction. Results(1) Methamphetamine selfad.inistration causes a loss of cortico-striatal plasticity in rat brain slices and.impaired.motor learning in the rotarod.task.(2) Human patients with ad.iction performs a lack of TMS-ind.ced.potentiation or d.pression of motor evoked.potentials, along with poor performance in rotary pursuit task. Conclusion Chronic methamphetamine use can affect behavioral performance via d.ug evoked.synaptic plasticity occlud.ng physiological motor learning.

As of tod.y, March 30, 2020, when this Ed.torial is being written, the severe acute respiratory synd.ome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), causal agent of the coronavirus d.sease (COVId.19) has been confirmed.in more than 745,000 cases world.id. and.has claimed.the lives of more than 35,000 people.1 In ad.ition to the morbid.ty and.mortality associated.with COVId.19, this betacoronavirus has placed.several of the world.s major economies in strife, mainly in Western Europe and.North America, paralyzing travel and.regular social interactions, making COVId.19 und.ubted.y one of the most important pand.mics in human history.
