Chitosan coatings with distinct innate immune bioactivities differentially stimulate angiogenesis,osteogenesis and chondrogenesis in poly-caprolactone scaffolds with controlled interconnecting pore size

This study tested whether osseous integration into poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)bioplastic scaffolds with fully-interconnecting 155±8μm pores is enhanced by an adhesive,non-inflammatory 99% degree of deacetylation(ddA)chitosan coating(99-PCL),or further incorporation of pro-inflammatory 83% ddA chitosan microparticles(83-99-PCL)to accelerate *** Zealand White rabbit osteochondral knee defects were press-fit with PCL,99-PCL,83-99-PCL,or allowed to bleed(drill-only).Between day 1 and 6 weeks of repair,drill-only defects repaired by endochondral ossification,with an 8-fold higher bone volume fraction(BVF)versus initial defects,compared to a 2-fold(99-PCL),1.1-fold(PCL),or 0.4-fold(83-99-PCL)change in *** innate immune cells swarmed to 83-99-PCL,elicited angiogenesis throughout the pores and induced slight bone *** and 99-PCL pores were variably filled with cartilage or avascular mesenchyme near the bone plate,or angiogenic mesenchyme into which repairing trabecular bone infiltrated up to 1 mm *** repair cartilage covered the 99-PCL scaffold(65%)than PCL(18%)or 83-99-PCL(0%)(pding that non-inflammatory chitosan coatings promoted cartilage infiltration into and over a bioplastic scaffold,and were compatible with trabecular bone *** study also revealed that in vitro osteogenesis assays have limited ability to predict osseous integration into porous scaffolds,because(1)in vivo,woven bone integrates from the leading edge of regenerating trabecular bone and not from mesenchymal cells adhering to scaffold surfaces,and(2)bioactive coatings that attract inflammatory cells induce bone resorption.

do dBPs swim in salt water pools? Comparison of 60 dBPs formed by electrochemically generated chlorine vs. conventional chlorine

disinfectants are added to swimming pools to kill harmful pathogens. Although liquid chlorine(sodium hypochlorite) is the most commonly used disinfectant, alternative disinfection techniques like electrochemically generated mixed oxidants or electrochemically generated chlorine, often referred to as salt water pools, are growing in popularity. However, these disinfectants react with natural organic matter and anthropogenic contaminants introduced to the pool water by swimmers to form disinfection byproducts(dBPs). dBPs have been linked to several adverse health effects, such as bladder cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and asthma. In this study, we quantified 60 dBPs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assessed the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of an indoor community swimming pool before and after switching to a salt water pool with electrochemically generated chlorine. Interestingly, the total dBPs increased by 15% upon implementation of the salt water pool, but the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity decreased by 45% and 15%, respectively. Predominant dBP classes formed were haloacetic acids, with trichloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid contributing 57% of the average total dBPs formed. Haloacetonitriles, haloacetic acids, and haloacetaldehydes were the primary drivers of calculated cytotoxicity, and haloacetic acids were the primary driver of calculated genotoxicity. diiodoacetic acid, a highly toxic iodinated dBP, is reported for the first time in swimming pool water. Bromide impurities in sodium chloride used to electrochemically generate chlorine led to a 73% increase in brominated dBPs, primarily driven by bromochloroacetic acid. This study presents the most extensive dBP study to-date for salt water pools.

How well does XAd resin extraction recover halogenated disinfection byproducts for comprehensive identification and toxicity testing?

Halogenated disinfection byproducts(dBPs) are an unintended consequence of drinking water disinfection, and can have significant toxicity. XAd resins are commonly used to extract and enrich trace levels of dBPs for comprehensive, nontarget identification of dBPs and also for in vitro toxicity studies. However, XAd resin recoveries for complete classes of halogenated dBPs have not been evaluated, particularly for low, environmentally relevant levels(ng/L to low μg/L). Thus, it is not known whether levels of dBPs or the toxicity of drinking water might be underestimated. In this study, dAX-8/XAd-2 layered resins were evaluated, considering both adsorption and elution from the resins, for extracting 66 dBPs from water. Results demonstrate that among the 7 classes of dBPs investigated, trihalomethanes(THMs), including iodo-THMs, were the most efficiently adsorbed, with recovery of most THMs ranging from 50%-96%, followed by halonitromethanes(40%-90%). The adsorption ability of XAd resins for haloacetonitriles, haloacetamides, and haloacetaldehydes was highly dependent on the individual species. The adsorption capacity of XAd resins for haloacetic acids was lower(5%-48%), even after adjusting to p H 1 before extraction. Recovery efficiency for most dBPs was comparable with their adsorption, as most were eluted effectively from XAd resins by ethyl acetate. dBP polarity and molecular weight were the two most important factors that determine their recovery. Recovery of trichloromethane, iodoacetic acid, chloro-and iodo-acetonitrile, and chloroacetamide were among the lowest, which could lead to underestimation of toxicity, particularly for iodoacetic acid and iodo-acetonitrile, which are highly toxic.

High temperature X-ray diffraction study of the formation of Na_(2)Ti_(3)O_(7) from a mixture of sodium carbonate and titanium oxide

Na2Ti3O7 has attracted much attention in the field of anode materials for Na-ion batteries thanks to its non-toxicity and very low working potential of 0.3 V vs Na0/Na+.Building a clearer picture of its formation from cheap Na_(2)CO_(3) and TiO_(2) starting materials is therefore of obvious ***,we report new insights from an in-situ high temperature X-ray diffraction study conducted from room temperature to 800°C,complemented by ex-situ *** were thereby able to position the previously reported Na_(4)Ti_(5)O_(12) and Na_(2)Ti_(6)O_(13) intermediate phases in a reaction scheme involving three successive steps and temperature *** and/or broadening of a subset of the Na_(2)Ti_(6)O_(13) reflections suggested a combination of intra-layer disorder with the well-established ordering of successive *** in-situ study was carried out on reproducible mixtures of Na_(2)CO_(3) and TiO_(2) in 1:3 molar ratio prepared by spraydrying of mixed aqueous ***-phase Na_(2)Ti_(3)O_(7) was obtained after only 8 h at 800°C in air,instead of a minimum of 20 h for a conventional solid-state route using the same *** analysis revealed~15 mm diameter granules made up from rectangular rods of a fewmm length presenting electrochemical properties in line with *** the absence of grinding or formation of intimate composites with conductive carbon,the specific capacity of 137 m Ah/g at C/5 decreased at higher rates.

On the Stability of Racing Sailing Boats with Foils

The development of foils for racing boats has changed the strategy of sailing. Recently, the America＇s cup held in San Francisco, has been the theatre of a tragicomic history due to the foils. during the last round, the New-Zealand boat was winning by 8 to 1 against the defender USA. The winner is the first with 9 victories. USA team understood suddenly （may be） how to use the control of the pitching of the inain foils by adjusting the rake in order to stabilize the ship. And USA won by 9 victories against 8 to the challenger NZ. The goal in this paper is to point out few aspects which could be taken into account in order to improve this mysterious control law which is known as the key of the victory of the USA team. There are certainly many reasons and in particular the cleverness of the sailors and of all the engineering team behind this project. But it appears interesting to have a mathematical discussion, even if it is a partial one, on the mechanical behaviour of these extraordinary sailing boats. The nunlerical exanlples given here are not the true ones. They have just been invented in order to explain the theoretical developments concerning three points： The possibility of tacking on the foils for sailing upwind, the nature of foiling instabilities, if there are, when the boat is flying and the control laws.

Pediatric upper extremity firearm injuries:an analysis of demographic factors and recurring mechanisms of injury

A programmable microfluidic platform to monitor calcium dynamics in microglia during inflammation

New Opportunities for Lanthanide Luminescence

Trivalent lanthanide ions display fascinating optical properties. The discovery of the corresponding elements and their first industrial uses were intimately linked to their optical properties. This relationship has been kept alive until today when many high-technology applications of lanthanide-containing materials such as energy-saving lighting devices, displays, optical fibers and amplifiers, lasers, responsive luminescent stains for biomedical analyses and in cellulo sensing and imaging, heavily rely on the brilliant and pure-color emission of lanthanide ions. In this review we first outlined the basics of lanthanide luminescence with emphasis on f-f transitions, the sensitization mechanisms, and the assessment of the luminescence efficiency of lanthanide-containing emissive molecular edifices. Emphasis was then put on two fast developing aspects of lanthanide luminescence： materials for telecommunications and light emitting diodes, and biomedical imaging and sensing. Recent advances in NIR-emitting materials for plastic amplifiers and waveguides were described, together with the main solutions brought by researchers to minimize non-radiative deactivation of excited states. The demonstration in 1999 that erbium tris（8-hydroxyquinolinate） displayed a bright green emission suitable for organic light emitting diodes （OLEds） was followed by realizing that in OLEds, 25% of the excitation energy leads to singlet states and 75% to triplet states. Since lanthanide ions are good triplet quenchers, they now also play a key role in the development of these lighting devices. Luminescence analyses of biological molecules are among the most sensitive analytical techniques known. The long lifetime of the lanthanide excited states allows time-resolved spectroscopy to be used, suppressing the sample autofluorescence and reaching very low detection limits.
