Addition of hip exercises to treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome:A meta-analysis

AIm:To determine if the addition of hip-strengthening exercises decreases pain and improves function in patients with patellofemoral pain ***:The authors completed a systematic reviewsearching eight databases(i.e.,Pub med,Cochrane,CINHAL,mEDLINE,Sports Discus,EmBASE,APTA Hooked on Evidence,and PEDro).Two independent reviewers screened and excluded studies if they did not meet the following inclusion criteria:subjects had a primary diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome(PFPS),intervention group included hip-strengthening exercises,control group included a traditional physical therapy intervention,study included outcome measures of pain and/or function,study used a randomized controlled trial design,PEDro score was ≥ 7,and study was published in a peer-reviewed *** outcome measures were subjective scales of pain and *** measures were converted to standardized mean difference [effect size(ES)],and a random-effects model was used to calculate the overall ***:Two hundred eighty-three studies were screened for inclusion in our *** studies were deemed suitable for data extraction and analysis.A total of 426 subjects were used in the nine ***,there was a significant positive effect of hip-strengthening exercises on measures of pain and function in subjects with PFPS(ES = 0.94,P = 0.00004).None of the individual studies had a negative ES,with study ES ranging from 0.35 to *** of the high degree of between-study variance(I2 = 76%;Q = 34.0,P meta-analyses and meta-regressions were *** of the potential moderator variables that were investigated(e.g.,outcome type,hip region targeted,duration of treatment) could explain a significant amount of the between-study variance in ES(P ≥ 0.23).CONCLUSION:Overall,the addition of hip-strengthening exercises to traditional physical therapy produced greater improvements in measures of pain and function.

Background:Progressive accumulation ofα-synuclein is a key step in the pathological development of Parkinson’s *** protein degradation and increased levels ofα-synuclein may trigger a pathological aggregation in vitro and in *** chaperone-mediated autophagy(CmA)pathway is involved in the intracellular degradation processes ofα-*** of the CmA pathway impairsα-synuclein degradation and causes ***:In the present study,we investigated the effects on the CmA pathway andα-synuclein aggregation using bioactive ingredients(Dihydromyricetin(DHm)and Salvianolic acid B(Sal B))extracted from natural medicinal *** both cell-free and cellular models ofα-synuclein aggregation,after administration of DHm and Sal B,we observed significant inhibition ofα-synuclein accumulation and *** were co-transfected with a Cterminal modifiedα-synuclein(SynT)and synphilin-1,and then treated with DHm(10μm)and Sal B(50μm)16 hours after transfection;levels ofα-synuclein aggregation decreased significantly(68%for DHm and 75%for Sal B).Concomitantly,we detected increased levels of LAmP-1(a marker of lysosomal homeostasis)and LAmP-2A(a key marker of CmA).Immunofluorescence analyses showed increased colocalization between LAmP-1 and LAmP-2A withα-synuclein inclusions after treatment with DHm and Sal *** also found increased levels of LAmP-1 and LAmP-2A both in vitro and in vivo,along with decreased levels ofα-***,DHm and Sal B treatments exhibited anti-inflammatory activities,preventing astroglia-and microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in BAC-α-syn-GFP transgenic ***:Our data indicate that DHm and Sal B are effective in modulatingα-synuclein accumulation and aggregate formation and augmenting activation of CmA,holding potential for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infections (UTI) during pregnancy may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Diabetes mellitus (Dm) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDm) are considered to be important additional risk factor for ASB and UTI during pregnancy. Aims: To investigate differences in prevalence of ASB and incidence of UTI in pregnant women with and without Dm and GDm to inform ASB screening and treatment policies. methods: Data from 214 pregnant women who gave birth during 2010 at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, Australia where cases were women with a clinical diagnosis of (G)Dm and controls were matched on date of birth. ASB was defined as the growth of at least 10e5 colony forming units/ml of one organism or any presence of group B streptococcus (GBS) at the first urine culture collected during pregnancy without complaints of a UTI. A clinical UTI was diagnosed by the treating physician, in combination with a positive urine culture it was defined as culture-confirmed UTI. Results: No significant differences in prevalence of ASB (5.6% and 3.7%;relative risk (RR) 1.50;95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.44 - 5.17), incidence of clinical UTI (4.7% and 11.2%;RR 0.42;95% CI 0.15 - 1.14) or culture-confirmed UTI (2.8% and 3.7%;RR 0.75;95% CI 0.17 - 3.27) between pregnant women with and without (G)Dm were present. No association was found between ASB and UTI. GBS was the most common causative organism of ASB in women with and without Dm (66.7% and 50.0%). Conclusion: In contrast with earlier research, no significant differences in prevalence of ASB or incidence of UTI was found between pregnant women with and without (G)Dm.

Bone marrow Aspirate and Trephine Biopsy Procedure in a Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya

Introduction: Bone marrow aspiration and biopsies are carried out principally to permit cytological assessment of marrow. The procedure is also indicated for immunophenotypic, cytogenetic, molecular and other specialized investigations. The skill to perform bone marrow aspirate and biopsy is usually acquired by the medical personnel through apprenticeship during their training. The training includes performing the procedure, indications, contraindications, and associated hazards. moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (mTRH) being a specialized Hospital in Western Kenya has several staff trained on performing the procedure. Objective: To assess the performance of bone marrow procedure by clinicians at a teaching and referral hospital. materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done involving 40 clinicians working in the hematology clinic and medical wards from June to December 2019. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data and data analysis was done using frequency tables. Approval to carry out the study was sought from the institutional IRB. Results: Patients attended to were predominantly adults 33 (83%). The superior posterior iliac crest was the commonest site for the procedure and disposable needles were routinely used in 33 (83%) of the patients. Pain and excessive bleeding 18 (45%) were the commonest complications associated with the procedure. Conclusion: most of the clinicians involved doing the procedure were residents/registrars. most of the patients attended to were adults (83%) and majority of the clinicians performed the procedure on the posterior iliac site (96%) using disposable needles (83%). Local anesthesia was commonly used during the procedure (88%). The common complications associated with the bone marrow procedure were pain and excessive bleeding (45%).

Purpose'. To examine adolescent experiences and perspectives of the GoActive intervention (ISRCTN31583496) using mixed methods processevaluation to determine satisfaction with intervention components and interpret a*dolescents experiences of the intervention process in order toprovide insights for future intervention ***'. Participants (n = 1542;13.2 土 0.4 years, mean 土 SD) provided questionnaire data at baseline (shyness, activity level) and post-intervention(intervention acceptability, satisfaction with components). Between-group differences (boys vs. girls and shy/inactive vs. others) weretested with linear regression models, accounting for school clustering. Data from 16 individual interviews (shy/inactive) and 11 focus groupswith 48 participants (mean = 4;range 2—7) were thematically coded. Qualitative and quantitative data were merged in an integrative mixedmethods convergence matrix, which denoted convergence and dissonance across ***'. Effect sizes for quantitative results were small and may not represent substantial between-group differences. Boys (vs. girls) preferredclass-based sessions (0 = 0.2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.1—0.3);qualitative data suggested that this was because boys preferred competition,which was supported quantitatively (0 = 0.2, 95%CI: 0.1-0.3). Shy/inactive students did not enjoy the competition (0 = -0.3, 95%CI:—0.5 to —0.1). Effects of autoclaving on the physiological action of paclobutrazol

Besides being employed as an efficient plant growth retardant for field, garden and potted plants, paclobutrazol (PBZ) is also used in laboratory experiments, mainly in aseptic cultures, both in autoclaved and non-autoclaved form. Therefore it is not known if autoclaving can partial or completely inactivates the product, thus decreasing its efficacy. Thus a simple experiment was carried out to assess to what extent the autoclaving process can affect some growth components and dry mass accumulation and partition in sunflower seedlings, by employing the techniques of plant Growth Analysis. Autoclaving did not modify either qualitative or quantitatively any of the plant responses to PBZ as well their reversions by gibberellic acid.

Increased virulence of the oral microbiome in oral squamous cell carcinoma revealed by metatranscriptome analyses

Oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC) is the most prevalent and most commonly studied oral cancer. However, there is a void regarding the role that the oral microbiome may play in OSCC. Although the relationship between microbial community composition and OSCC has been thoroughly investigated, microbial profiles of the human microbiome in cancer are understudied. Here we performed a small pilot study of community-wide metatranscriptome analysis to profile mRNA expression in the entire oral microbiome in OSCC to reveal molecular functions associated with this disease. Fusobacteria showed a statistically significantly higher number of transcripts at tumour sites and tumour-adjacent sites of cancer patients compared to the healthy controls analysed. Regardless of the community composition, specific metabolic signatures were consistently found in disease. Activities such as iron ion transport, tryptophanase activity, peptidase activities and superoxide dismutase were over-represented in tumour and tumour-adjacent samples when compared to the healthy controls. The expression of putative virulence factors in the oral communities associated with OSCC showed that activities related to capsule biosynthesis, flagellum synthesis and assembly, chemotaxis, iron transport, haemolysins and adhesins were upregulated at tumour sites. moreover, activities associated with protection against reactive nitrogen intermediates, chemotaxis, flagellar and capsule biosynthesis were also upregulated in non-tumour sites of cancer patients. Although they are preliminary, our results further suggest that Fusobacteria may be the leading phylogenetic group responsible for the increase in expression of virulence factors in the oral microbiome of OSCC patients.

Haematological and lipid profile assays in Nigerian asthmatics

Objective:To assess the haematological and lipid profile assays in ***: Eighty asthmatic subjects were prospectively studied in a major referral centre serving the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for 12 months(2006-2007).Clinico-haematological and serum lipid total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),and lipoproteins concentration were analyzed after adjusting for age,cigarette smoking,alcohol ingestion,hypertension and diabetes ***: Eighty patients(34 males and 46 females) were seen with female predominating in the various age groups(m∶F ratio,0.7∶1).Total cholesterol and low density lipoproteins-cholesterol for the asthmatics was significantly higher than the controls(Pmatics was 3.67 compared to the control value of *** and low density lipoprotein-cholesterole(LDL-C) were significantly higher in females than the males(Pmbined hypertriglyceridemia(HT,>2.3mmol/L) and a significant hypercholesterolemia(HC,>5.2mmol/L) according to the Adult Treatment Panel III definition in asthmatics thereby putting them at increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disease as well as other disorders related to excess *** was a significant thrombocytopenia(Pmay accompany allergen exposure and this persists for 24 h;that asthmatics of African descent showed a significantly increased total leucocyte count(P=0.001) similar to other studies in the Western ***: Hyperlipidaemia is a prevalent medical problem among asthmatics;hence screening for fasting serum lipid levels to identify those who need early intervention is recommended.
