Dear Editor,The severe coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is associated with ***,such as low-molecular-weight heparin,warfarin,thrombin inhibitors,and factor Xa(FXa)inhibitors,are thus recommended by the American Society of Hematology and National Institutes of Health for COVID-19 patients(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021).Clinical trials with anticoagulants have shown the increased survival of critically ill COVID-19 patients under non-invasive and invasive ventilatory assistance(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021),along with decreased consumption of platelets and clotting factors and a reduced risk of hemorrhage(Adam et al.,2021).Among the anti-clotting agents,early use of orally available FXa and thrombin inhibitors(Chowdhury et al.,2020;Rentsch et al.,2021)prevented high levels of D-dimer,which is the final product from the clotting/fibrinolysis cascade and is directly implicated with severe COVID-19(Rentsch et al.,2021).

Huntington’s disease is a genetic disease caused by expanded CAG repeats on exon 1 of the huntingtin gene located on chromosome *** evidence implicates impaired mitochondrial energetics,altered mitochondrial biogenesis and quality control,disturbed mitochondrial trafficking,oxidative stress and mitochondrial calcium dyshomeostasis in the pathogenesis of the ***,conventional mitochondrial-targeted molecules,such as cysteamine,creatine,coenzyme q10,or triheptanoin,yielded negative or inconclusive ***,future therapeutic strategies,aiming to restore mitochondrial biogenesis,improving the fission/fusion balance,and improving mitochondrial trafficking,could prove useful tools in improving the phenotype of Huntington’s disease and,used in combination with genome-editing methods,could lead to a cure for the disease.

Background:Conjunctival lymphoma,conjunctival amyloidosis and benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia(BRLH)are conditions that often have a similar appearance on the ocular *** use of high resolution anterior segment optical coherence tomography(HR-OCT)enables clinicians to evaluate distinctive differences in tissue morphology and cellular patterns in various ocular surface *** this study,we characterize the morphological differences seen in conjunctival lymphoma,conjunctival amyloidosis and BRLH on HR-OCT ***:A retrospective chart review was performed of patients with biopsy proven conjunctival lymphoma,conjunctival amyloidosis and BRLH between 2012 and 2019 at the Bascom Palmer Eye *** were excluded if HR-OCT imaging was not performed on initial ***:Thirty-four total eyes of 27 patients were *** eyes had conjunctival lymphoma(16 patients),8 eyes had conjunctival amyloidosis(6 patients)and 6 eyes had BRLH(5 patients).All conditions appeared clinically as pink,red or yellow subepithelial lesions but had different features on *** lymphoma,HR-OCT images typically showed homogenous,dark subepithelial lesions with smooth borders,containing monomorphic dot-like ***-OCT images of amyloidosis typically showed heterogeneous,dark lesions with irregular borders,often containing hyperreflective linear ***-OCT images of BRLH showed variable infiltration of the subepithelial tissue,at times with homogenous lesions containing dot-like infiltrates like lymphoma and other times with more hyperreflective,subepithelial *** cytometry and gene rearrangement was needed for final differentiation between BRLH and lymphoma ***:Distinctive features on HR-OCT of conjunctival lymphoma,conjunctival amyloidosis and BRLH can help characterize these lesions beyond what is apparent with the clinical *** studies can further validate this technology’s use with m

Persistence in tillage decisions: Aggregate data analysis

The Emission Gap Report 2013 from the United Nations Environment Program showed that adopting conservation tillage such as no-till,as an alternative to conventional tillage,contributes significantly to climate change mitigation through carbon ***,substantial amounts of soil carbon are lost when farmers interrupt continuous use of conservation tillage with conventional *** tillage is spreading,but little is known about the behavioral persistence in tillage *** address the gap in the literature,we estimate county-specific Markov models of tillage-crop choices,and use the predicted probabilities of alternative two-and three-year tillage rotations to evaluate spatial variation and temporal persistence in conservation tillage adoption for the state of lowa (U.S).We find that the county-average probabilities of continuous conservation tillage range between 0.133 and 0.295,and vary significantly among crop *** also find a statistically strong positive effect of the incidence of the highly erodible land on the county-average use of continuous conservation *** results underscore the importance of dynamic modeling for understanding behavioral persistence in tillage decisions,and the interdependence between farmers' crop and tillage rotations.

The Unmet Need in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: Impact of Comorbidity Burden on Treatment Patterns and Outcomes in Elderly Patients

Introduction: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disease of the elderly. Elderly patients often have increased comorbidity burden and loss of organ reserve that may impact their ability to tolerate cancer therapy. We described realworld characteristics of typical CLL patients and identified factors predictive of receiving treatment. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of 8343 first primary CLL patients was performed using the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database. Patients were diagnosed from 1/1/1998 to 12/31/2007, >66 years, and continuously enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B in the year prior to diagnosis. Comorbidity was examined using the National Cancer Institute comorbidity index and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale. Cox and Logistic regression modeling assessed patient characteristics predictive of receiving treatment within the first year after diagnosis. Results: Median follow-up time from diagnosis was 782 days. During the study time period, there were 3366 (40%) treated patients and 4977 (60%) untreated. Even among those diagnosed with advanced stage (n = 4213), 57% were not treated. Treated patients were younger at diagnosis compared to untreated (76 vs. 79;p 80 years, females, and with early stage disease;and significantly decreased with increasing comorbidity burden. Conclusions: Age, gender, comorbidity and stage were predictive of receiving treatment. Among patients with advanced stage, 57% were not being treated possibly due to older age and/or higher comorbidity burden.

A Study on Nanoparticle Aerosol Filtration via Different Fibrous Filters by Using CFD Approach

Fibrous filters such as nonwoven media are generally characterized by their collection efficiency and pressure drop. The traditional computational studies in this area typically based on unrealistic over-simplified geometries with the fibers placed in a lattice perpendicular to the flow. This paper describes the filter properties made of different Nonwoven materials by using Computational Fluid Dynamics （CFD） approach. In this study, for the first time, a virtual 3- D web is generated based on the fiber orientation information obtaining from analyzing microscopic images of both long-fiber and short-fiber nonwoven structures. Pressure drop and collection efflcicucy of our virtual filter are simulated and compared with the previous analytical and numerical models as well as experiment.
