Ecological role of physical dormancy in seeds of Oxytropis racemosa in a semiarid sandland with unpredictable rainfall

Aims Seed dormancy and the soil seed bank are crucial to plant regeneration strategy,especially in semiarid ecosystems with unpredictable precipi-tation.the aim of this study was to investigate how seed dormancy is controlled by environmental factors and how it is correlated with the soil seed bank and regeneration of the perennial legume Oxytropis race-mosa,a dominant perennial herb in Mu Us Sandland of semiarid china.Methods Germination and imbibition experiments on fresh intact and scarified seeds of O.racemosa were used to identify physical dormancy(PY)in seeds of this species.Soil seed bank dynamics,timing of seedling emer-gence and the fate of buried seeds in the natural habitat were investigated.Important Findings PY was broken by mechanical scarification or wet heat/ice water cycles but not solely by dry heat or wet heat treatment.the soil seed bank exhibited seasonal changes in the number of seeds,which was highest in September and lowest in July.Seeds buried at different sand depths gradually lost dormancy;20-42%of the seeds remained dormant after 20 months of burial.Dormancy break occurs grad-ually throughout the year.Our results indicate that O.racemosa exhibits hardcoatedness heterogeneity that spreads germination of a seed cohort between seasons and years in the semiarid environ-ment,where the amount of precipitation during the growing season is highly variable.

通过多次到中国学术访问, 得知许多中国学者围绕植物种子在基础研究和应用领域开展了多学科的研究。此次《植物生态学报》种子生态学专辑将向读者集中介绍中国学者在种子生态学这一有趣专题的研究进展。该专辑刊登了23篇论文, 包括19篇研究论文和4篇综述论文, 涉及种子传播、种子性状、种子休眠和萌发、土壤种子库以及幼苗生长对变化环境的响应等多方面的研究内容, 我们对这些论文进行了简单的评述。由于篇幅的限制, 该专辑所刊登出的论文只是当前中国学者对植物种子多方面研究的一小部分内容。该专辑的刊出将为国内外学者对种子研究的合作交流提供便利, 也将向参加中国2013年第四届国际种子生态学学术研讨会的国内外专家介绍中国学者在种子生态学等领域的研究现状。

Effects of water stress and Nacl stress on different life cycle stages of the cold desert annual Lachnoloma lehmannii in china

For a plant species to complete its life cycle in arid and saline environments,each stage of the life cycle must be tolerant to the harsh environmental conditions.The aim of the study was to determine the effects of water stress(water potentials of–0.05,–0.16,–0.33,–0.56,–0.85 and–1.21 MPa)and Nacl stress(50,100,200,300,400,500 and 600 mmol/L Nacl)on seed germination percentage,seedling survival and growth,juvenile growth and plant reproduction of Lachnoloma lehmannii Bunge(Brassicaceae),an cold desert annual that grows in the Junggar Basin of Xinjiang,china in 2010.Results indicated that low water stress(–0.05 and–0.16 MPa)had no significant effect on seed germination percentage.With a decrease in water potential,germination percentage decreased,and no seeds germinated at–0.85 and–1.21 MPa water stresses.Germination percentage of seeds was significantly affected by Nacl stress,and higher germination percentages were observed under non-saline than saline conditions.An increase in Nacl concentrations progressively inhibited seed germination percentage,and no seeds germinated at ≥400 mmol/L Nacl concentration.Non-germinated seeds were transferred from both PEG(polyethylene glycol-6000)and Nacl solutions to distilled water for seed germination recovery.The number of surviving seedlings and their heights and root lengths significantly decreased as Nacl stress increased.About 30% of the plants survived and produced fruits/seeds at 200 mmol/L Nacl concentration.Thus,seed germination,seedling establishment and reproductive stage in the life cycle of L.lehmannii are water-and salt-tolerant,with seedlings being the least tolerant.These tolerances help explain why this species can survive and produce seeds in arid and saline habitats.

Digital ID framework for human-centric monitoring and control of smart buildings

Smart offices can help employers attract and retain talented people and can positively impact well-being and productivity.Thanks to emerging technologies and increased computational power,smart buildings with a specific focus on personal experience are gaining attraction.Real-time monitoring and estimation of the human states are key to achieving individual satisfaction.Although some studies have incorporated real-time data into the buildings to predict occupants’indoor experience(e.g.,thermal comfort and work engagement),a detailed framework to integrate personal prediction models with building systems has not been well studied.Therefore,this paper proposes a framework to predict and track the real-time states of each individual and assist with decision-making(e.g.,room assignment and indoor environment control).The core idea of the framework is to distinguish individuals by a new concept of Digital ID(DID),which is then integrated with recognition,prediction,recommendation,visualization,and feedback systems.The establishment of the DID database is discussed and a systematic prediction methodology to determine occupants’indoor comfort is developed.Based on the prediction results,the comfort Score Index(cSI)is proposed to give recommendations regarding the best-fit rooms for each individual.In addition,a visualization platform is developed for real-time monitoring of the indoor environment.To demonstrate the framework,a case study is presented.The thermal sensation is considered the reference for the room allocation,and two groups of people are used to demonstrate the framework in different scenarios.For one group of people,it is assumed that they are existing occupants with personal DID databases.People in another group are considered the new occupants without any personal database,and the public database is used to give initial guesses about their thermal sensations.The results show that the recommended rooms can provide better thermal environments for the occupants compared to the randomly assigned rooms.Furth

Vulnerability analysis of the chinese coupled aviation and high-speed railway network

The integrated aviation and High-Speed Railway(HSR)transportation system plays a vital role for today’s inter-city transportation services.However,an increasing number of unexpected disruptions(such as operation failures,natural disasters,or intentional attacks)pose a considerable threat to the normal operation of the system,especially on ground transfer,leading to the extensive research on its vulnerability.Previous approaches mainly focus on interruptions within a single transportation mode,neglecting the role of ground transfer which serves as a coupled connection between aviation and High-Speed Railway.This paper proposes a network-based framework for evaluating the vulnerability of the chinese coupled Aviation and High-Speed Railway(cAHSR)network from the viewpoint of ground transfer interruption.Taking the end-to-end travel time and passenger flow information into consideration as an evaluation measure and analyzing from the perspective of urban agglomerations,an adaptive method is developed to identify the critical cities and further investigate their failure impacts on the geographic distribution of vulnerability.In addition,the proposed model explores variations of vulnerability under different failure time intervals.Based on the empirical study,some major conclusions are highlighted as follows:(A)Only a few cities show significant impacts on the network’s vulnerability when ground transfer interruptions occurred.(B)The distribution of vulnerability is not proportional to the distance between failure city and influenced city.(c)The vulnerability is more serious in the morning and evening when the ground transfer is disconnected.Our findings may provide new insights for maintenance and optimization of the cAHSR network and other real-world transportation networks.

Portal vein thrombosis in cirrhotic patients-it is always the small pieces that make the big picture

Portal vein thrombosis(PVT) is a frequent and serious complication in patients with liver cirrhosis(Lc). Recently, a new classification of PVT was proposed, although the functional component was not completed included. The status of liver disease(compensated/decompensated) should be added to this classification. Reduced portal flow velocity and the acquired hypercoagulable status associated with Lc are the main risk factors for PVT development, although endothelial dysfunction may play an important role that needs to be further evaluated. The European Association for the Study of the Liver and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease recommend that the anticoagulant treatment should be consider in cirrhotic patients with PVT. Low molecular weight heparin and vitamin K antagonists proved their efficacy and relatively safety in PVT treatment, although in addition to recanalization rates, more complex endpoints such as mortality and decompensation rate should be evaluated. The new oral anticoagulant therapies offers the advantage of oral administration in the absence of laboratory monitoring, however, there are a few reports regarding their use in cirrhotic patients, most of them referring to compensated isolated cases. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt could be an alternative if thrombosis progresses despite anticoagulatant therapy and/or when PVT is associated with portal hypertension complications. The aim of this editorial is to discuss the different aspects of pathophysiology, clinical relevance, diagnosis and management of PVT in patients with Lc.

Induced pluripotent stem cell(iPSc)technology is one of the de novo approaches in regeneration medicine and has led to new research applications for wound healing in recent years.Fibroblasts have attracted wide attention as the first cell line used for differentiation into iPScs.Researchers have found that fibroblasts can be induced into different types of cells in variable mediums or microenvironments.This indicates the potential“stem”characteristics of fibroblasts in terms of direct cellular reprogramming compared with the iPSc detour.In this review,we described the morphology and biological function of fibroblasts.The stem cell characteristics and activities of fibroblasts,including transdifferentiation into myofibroblasts,osteogenic cells,chondrogenic cells,neurons,and vascular tissue,are discussed.The biological values of fibroblasts are then briefly reviewed.Finally,we discussed the potential applications of fibroblasts in clinical practice.

checkmate to liver biopsy in chronic hepatitis c?

Liver biopsy (LB) has traditionally been considered the gold standard for pretreatment evaluation of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis c (cHc). However, LB is an invasive procedure with several shortcomings (intra-and interobserver variability of histopathological interpretation, sampling errors, high cost) and the risk of rare but potentially life-threatening complications. In addition, LB is poorly accepted by patients and it is not suitable for repeated evaluation. Further-more, the prevalence of cHc makes LB unrealistic to be performed in all patients with this disease who are candidates for antiviral therapy. The above-mentioned drawbacks of LB have led to the development of non-invasive methods for the assessment of liver fibrosis. Several noninvasive methods, ranging from serum marker assays to advanced imaging techniques, have proved to be excellent tools for the evaluation of liver fibrosis in patients with cHc, whereas the value of LB as a gold standard for staging fibrosis prior to antiviral therapy has become questionable for clinicians. Despite significant resistance from those in favor of LB, noninvasive methods for pretreatment assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with cHc have become part of routine clinical practice. With protease inhibitors-based triple therapy already available and substantial improvement in sustained virological response, the time has come to move forward to noninvasiveness, with no risks for the patient and, thus, no need for LB in the assessment of liver fibrosis in the decision making for antiviral therapy in cHc.
