Objectives::To investigate the prevalence of ACADM pathogenic variants, c.985A>G and c.199T>C, for medium chain acyl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) in a healthy population in the southern region of Brazil. Methods::This was an observational cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling strategy. The participants were recruited from the blood bank of the Hospital de Clínicas of Porto Alegre, Brazil. A total of 1000 healthy individuals from the state of Rio Grande do Sul were included. Genotyping for the c.199T>C and c.985A>G variants was performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique, respectively. Individuals considered heterozygous for c.985A>G were subjected to additional acylcarnitine profile analysis using tandem mass spectrometry. Carrier frequency was obtained by calculating the ratio of heterozygous individuals to the total number of individuals analyzed and reported with a 95% confidence interval. Allele and genotype frequencies were calculated based on the Hardy-Weinberg ***::The c.985A>G variant was detected as heterozygotes in three individuals (frequency of the heterozygous genotype = 1:333, allele frequency= 0.0015, minimum frequency of MCADD= 1:444,444) whose acylcarnitine profiles were within normal limits. The c.199T>C variant was not ***::Considering the small sample size and associated allelic heterogeneity with MCADD, these findings are believed to denote the rarity or underdiagnosis of MCADD in southern Brazil. This study provides evidence for the need for further investigation to ascertain the contribution of these diseases to child morbidity and mortality in the country.

A Comparison between Deductive and Inductive Approaches for Teaching EFL Grammar to High School Students

This study had the purpose of testingtwo methods for teaching grammar in Englishasa Foreign Language(EFL)class:the deductive and inductive approaches in terms of effectiveness and *** research was conducted in a public high school in *** students enrolled in the second year of senior high school *** in-service teacher taught the EFL classes during the process of intervention(10 weeks),and two EFL teachers observed all of these classes and recorded the information by filling in observation *** students were administered grammar pretests and post-tests in order to assess their grammar *** results of the tests showed a significant difference in the scores in favor of the inductive *** the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the tests and observation sheets,we concluded that the inductive approach is more effective for teaching grammar in the EFL classroom in terms of instruction and rapport.

AIM: To study the role of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in the pathogenesis of liver injury, specifically the activation of inflammatory mediators. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 20 out-patients were studied, 10 of them with *** blood mononuclear cells were isolated and exposed to lipopolysaccharide or lipoteichoic acid. CD14, Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 expression was determined by flow cytometry, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-12 and IL-10 secretion in supernatants was determined by ELISA. RESULTS: Higher CD14, Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 expression was observed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from cirrhotic patients, (P < 0.01, P < 0.006, P < 0.111) respectively. Lipopolysaccharide and lipoteichoic acid induced a further increase in CD14 expression (P < 0.111 lipopolysaccharide, P < 0.013 lipoteichoic acid), and a decrease in Toll-like receptor 2 (P < 0.008 lipopolysaccharide, P < 0.008 lipoteichoic acid) and Toll-like receptor 4 (P < 0.008 lipopolysaccharide, P < 0.028 lipoteichoic acid) expression. With the exception of TNFα, absolute cytokine secretion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was lower in cirrhotic patients under nonexposure conditions (P < 0.070 IL-6, P < 0.009 IL-1β, P < 0.022 IL-12). Once exposed to lipopolysaccharide or lipoteichoic acid, absolute cytokine secretion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was similar in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, determining a more vigorous response in the former (P < 0.005 TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-2 and IL-10 lipopolysaccharide; P < 0.037 TNFα; P < 0.006 IL-1β; P < 0.005 IL-6; P < 0.007 IL-12; P < 0.014 IL-10 lipoteichoic acid). Response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was more intense after lipopolysaccharide than after lipoteichoic acid exposure. Parameters Influencing the Optimization Process in Airborne Particles PM10 Using a Neuro-Fuzzy Algorithm Optimized with Bacteria Foraging (BFOA)

The airborne pollutants monitoring is an overriding task for humanity given that poor quality of air is a matter of public health, causing issues mainly in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, specifically the PM10 particle. In this contribution is generated a base model with an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which is later optimized, using a swarm intelligence technique, named Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA). Several experiments were carried with BFOA parameters, tuning them to achieve the best configuration of said parameters that produce an optimized model, demonstrating that way, how the optimization process is influenced by choice of the parameters.

Oxidative stress and labile plasmatic iron in anemic patients following blood therapy

AIM: To determine the plasmatic iron content and evaluate the oxidative stress(OS) markers in subjects receiving blood ***: Thirty-nine individuals with unspecified anemia receiving blood transfusions and 15 healthy subjects were included in the study. Anemic subjects were divided into three subgrou P:(1) those that received up to five blood transfusions(n = 14);(2) those that received from five to ten transfusions(n = 11); and(3) those that received more than ten transfusions(n = 14). Blood samples were collected by venous arm puncture and stored in tubes containing heparin. The plasma and cells were separated by centrifugation and subsequently used for analyses. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance followed by Dunn's multiple comparison tests when ***: The eletrophoretic hemoglobin profiles of the subjects included in this study indicated that no patients presented with hemoglobinopathy. Labile plasmatic iron, ferritin, protein carbonyl, thiobarbituric acidreactive substances(TBARS) and dichlorofluorescein diacetate oxidation were significantly higher(P < 0.05), whereas total thiol levels were significantly lower(P < 0.05) in transfused subjects compared to controls. Additionally, the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly lower in the transfused subjects(P < 0.05). Antioxidant enzyme activities and total thiol levels were positively correlated(P < 0.05), and negatively correlated with the levels of protein carbonyl and TBARS(P < 0.05). In contrast, protein carbonyl and TBARS were positively correlated(P < 0.05). Altogether, these data confirm the involvement of OS in patients following therapy with repeated blood ***: Our data reveal that changes in OS markers are correlated with levels of labile plasmatic iron and ferritin and the number of transfusions.

Biological and Chemical Control in Rot Root in Avocado by Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands

"Avocado sadness" caused by the Oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands, is one of the main diseases affecting this fruit crop in Michoacan, Mexico, without having an efficient control strategy for that. In this research three Trichoderma isolates and Ridomil Gold? 4E fungicide were tested in avocado trees infected with this pathogen using the growing and coloring vegetative flow growing. Results were analyzed with an experimental design completely random with four treatments and repetitions. Different responses were presented form avocado trees to each treatment. Trichoderma erinaceum Bissett, Kubicek & Szackacs treatment was the best controlling disease in trees with grade II and III damage. Trichoderma aggressivum Samuels & W. Gams controlled better in trees with grade III damage. At last, Trichoderma arundinaceum Zafari, Graef. and Samuels were the best controlling trees with the highest grade damage. Fungicide Ridomil Gold? 4E controlled the disease in trees with the lowest grade damage (I and II), their medias were similar to witness.

Amaranthus is a dicotyledonous pseudocereal and one of the new world’s oldest crops,having originated from Meso-America and was a major food crop of the *** in the cultivation and consumption of Amaranthus seed in the modern era began in the mid-1970s with the rediscovery and promotion of amaranth due to its superior nutritional attributes as compared to cereal *** plant has a high-quality protein,carbohydrates,unsaturated oil,squalene,dietary fiber,tocopherols,phenolic compounds,flavonoids,vitamins and *** amaranth’s grain was collected at San Martin Pahuacan,Estado de Mexico,*** used methodology is gamma spectrometry with Hyperpure Germanium detector(HPGe)and Multichannel Analyzer(MCA)with Maestro *** result shows a unique concentration of radioactive potassium content in the amaranth protein isolated from amaranth grains is 424.1 mg/100 g of amaranth *** is an excellent agreement between the amount of potassium determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy in our laboratory and the value obtained in this work using the Gamma Spectrometry Technique.

The N-pentafluorophenyl-exo-endo-norbornene-5,6-dicarboximide (2a) and N-phenyl-exo-endo-nor-bornene-5,6-dicarboximide (2b) monomers were synthesized and polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using bis(tricyclohexylphosphine) benzylidene ruthenium(IV) dichloride (I) and tricyclohexylphosphine [1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene][benzylidene] ruthenium dichloride (II). Both catalysts were used to synthesize random and block high molecular weight copolymers which were further hydrogenated using a Wilkinson’s catalyst. Then, the saturated copolymers were modified by reacting with sodium 4-hydroxybenzene-sulfonate dihydrate to generate new ionomers with fluoro-sulfonic acid pendant groups.
