Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary dynamics.Malaria and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species worldwide.However,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite unexplored.Here,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian ecoregions.Wedetected 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird species.We showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously recorded.Moreover,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian parasites.Our outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ecoregions.Furthermore,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite richness.Generalist parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian parasites.These outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified haemosporidianlineages.Further studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD) and type 2 diabetes(T2D): More than 55 million people suffer from dementia, and it is expected that over 150 million people will suffer from this disease by 2050. AD is the most common type of dementia and while aging remains the main risk factor to suffer it, previous studies have also shown that metabolic disorders, and T2D specifically, are also major contributors(Wang et al., 2012).

Reactive oxygen species and antioxidant properties from mushrooms

Preventive medicine and food industry have shown an increased interest in the development of natural antioxidants,since those most commonly used synthetic antioxidants may have restricted use in food.This could explain why there is currently much research on the antioxidant properties from natural products such as mushrooms.Many mushrooms have been reported to possess antioxidant properties,which enable them to neutralize free radicals.The oxygen molecule is a free radical,which lead to the generation of the reactive oxygen species and can damage the cells.Cell damage caused by free radicals appears to be a major contributor to aging and degenerative diseases.Mushrooms antioxidant components are found in fruit bodies,mycelium and culture both,which include polysaccharides,tocopherols,phenolics,carotenoids,ergosterol and ascorbic acid among others.Fruit bodies or mycelium can be manipulated to produce active compounds in a relatively short period of time,which represent a significant advantage in antioxidant compounds extraction from mushrooms.Antioxidant compounds may be extracted to be used as functional additives or mushrooms can be incorporated into our food regime,representing an alternative source of food to prevent damage caused by oxidation in the human body.

Co-Optimization of Behind-the-Meter and Front-of-Meter Value Streams in Community Batteries

Community batteries (CBs) are emerging to support and even enable energy communities and generally help consumers, especially space-constrained ones, to access potential techno-economic benefits from storage and support local grid decarbonization. However, the economic viability of CB projects is often uncertain. In this regard, typical feasibility studies assess CB value for behind-the-meter (BTM) operation or whole-sale market participation, i.e., front-of-meter (FOM). This work proposes a novel techno-economic operational framework that allows systematic assessment of the different options and introduces a two-meter architecture that co-optimizes both BTM and FOM benefits. A real CB project application in Australia is used to demonstrate the significant two-meter co-optimization opportunities that could enhance the business case of CB and energy communities by multi-service provision and value stacking.

Small renal mass(SRM)incidence has been increasing over last decades due to the widespread access to diagnostic tools and is now accounting for 48%e66%of all renal cell carcinoma(RCC)diagnoses[1].The optimal management of SRM is still debated since approximately 25%of T1a is benign lesions.The role of active surveillance(AS)and the problem of SRM overtreatment are widely described in the current literature.However,RCC mortality has remained stable over the last 2 decades.The major strength of AS is the“tetrafecta”concept as it brings renal function preservation,safe oncological outcomes,and no surgical complications,and it maintains quality of life.AS is nowadays considered as a safe strategy for many SRMs.
