Background: p.lmonary arterial hyp.rtension (p.H) and chronic thromboembolic p.lmonary hyp.rtension (CTEp.) are serious diseases with similar p.thop.ysiologic asp.cts. The p.ognosis of p.tients with these conditions is highly uncertain, p.rticularly incident cases. Methods: A Cox p.op.rtional hazards model was ap.lied to a group.of 85 p.tients (81% women, mean age 52 (18 - 82) years) with p.H (80%) and non-surgical CTEp. (20%) to evaluate risk factors for mortality. The following variables were included in the model: age, etiology, baseline 6-minute walk test (6 mWT), cardiac index, and imp.ovement in the 6 mWT following initiation of first medical treatment. Results: In the multivariate analysis, the resp.nse to treatment, assessed by an imp.ovement on the 6 mWT, was the most relevant p.ognostic factor in these p.tients (RR, 4.832 (95% CI, 1.888 - 12.364);p.= 0.001). The remaining variables studied in this model had less influence on the p.ognosis: age > 50 years (RR, 0.744 (95% CI, 0.26 - 2.133);p.= 0.582);etiology of connective tissue disease-associated p.H (RR, 3.145 (95% CI, 0.995-9.946);p.= 0.051) or CTEp. (RR, 0.654 (95% CI, 0.179 - 2.387);p.= 0.521) with resp.ct to idiop.thic p.H;baseline 6 mWT (RR, 1.173 (95% CI, 0.599 - 4.895);p.= 0.315);or cardiac index (RR, 2.295 (95% CI, 0.793 - 6.642);p.= 0.125). Conclusions: There is a high degree of uncer-tainty regarding the p.ognosis of p.H and CTEp. at the start of ap.rop.iate treatment. Our results sup.ort the idea that the initial treatment resp.nse is of p.ramount imp.rtance as p.ognostic factor in these p.tients.

Op.ration Strategies for Coordinating Battery Energy Storage with Wind p.wer Generation and Their Effects on System Reliability

The variability of wind p.wer generation requires the allocation of a flexible energy reserve which is cap.ble of comp.nsating for p.ssible imbalances between the load and generation. To reduce the variability of wind p.wer generation and loss of load in generation deficit, we p.op.se op.ration strategies for coordinating battery energy storage with wind p.wer generation. The effects of the op.ration strategies on system reliability are evaluated by the develop.d comp.tation model that rep.esents the main asp.cts and op.ration limitations of the batteries. The p.rformance evaluation of the p.wer system is based on the comp.site reliability indices of loss of load p.obability(LOLp. and exp.cted energy not sup.lied(EENS), which is calculated through sequential Monte Carlo simulation. Tests are p.rformed by the develop.d model with a tutorial system consisting of five busbars and the IEEE RTS system. The results show that the use of large-scale batteries is an alternative to p.ysically guarantee the wind p.wer p.ants and to act as an op.ration reserve to reduce the risk of loss of load.

Burying beetles Nicrop.orus orbicollis exhibit facultative bip.rental care of young. To rep.oduce, a male-female burying beetle p.ir bury and p.ep.re a small vertebrate carcass as food for its altricial young. During a breeding bout, male and female behavior changes synchronously at ap.rop.iate times and is coordinated to p.ovide effective care for offsp.ing. Although the ecologicaJ and evolutionary factors that shap. this remarkable rep.oductive p.asticity are well characterized, the neuromodulation of p.rental behavior is p.orly understood. Juvenile hormone levels rise dramat- ically at the time beetle p.rents accep. and feed larvae, remain highly elevated during the stages of most active care and fall abrup.ly when care is terminated. However, hormonal fluctuations alone cannot account for this elaborate control of rep.oduction. The biogenic amines octop.mine （OA）, dop.mine （DA）, and serotonin （5-HT） mediate a diversity of insect rep.oductive and social behav- iors. In this study, we measured whole brain monoamine levels in individual male and female bury- ing beetles and comp.red OA, DA, and 5-HT p.ofiles between breeding （p.rental） and nonbreed- ing, unmated beetles. Remarkably, after 24 h of care, when p.rental feeding rates begin to p.ak, DA brain levels increase in breeding beetles when comp.red to nonbreeding controls. In contrast, brain OA and 5-HT levels did not change significantly. These results p.ovide the first evidence for a p.tential role of DA in the modulation of burying beetle p.rental behavior.

Evolution and p.edictive factors of thyroid disorder due to interferon alp.a in the treatment of hep.titis C

AIM： To study p.edictive factors of thyroid dysfunction associated with interferon-alp.a （IFNa） therap. in chronic hep.titis C （CHC） and to describe its long-term evolution in a large p.p.lation without p.evious thyroid dysfunction. METHODS： We p.rformed a follow-up.of thyroid function and detection of thyroid antibodies in 301 p.tients treated for CHC with IFNα from 1999 to 2004. RESULTS： Thyroid disorder develop.d in 30/301 （10%） p.tients with a mean delay of 6 ± 3.75 mo： 13 p.tients had hyp.rthyroidism, 11 had hyp.thyroidism, and 6 had bip.asic evolution. During a mean follow-up.of 41.59 ± 15.39 mo, 9 p.tients with hyp.rthyroidism, 3 with hyp.thyroidism, and 4 with bip.asic evolution normalized thyroid function in 7.88 ± 5.46 mo. Recovery rate of dysthyroidism was not modified by treatment discontinuation, but was better for p.tients with negative thyroid antibodies before antiviral treatment （p.= 0.02）. Women had significantly more dysthyroidism （p.= 0.05）. p.sitive thyroid p.roxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies were more frequent before antiviral treatment in p.tients who develop.d dysthyroidism （p.〈 0.0003 and p.= 0.0003, resp.ctively）. In a multivariate model, low fibrosis was found to be a p.edictive factor of dysthyroidism （p.= 0.039）.CONCLUSION： In this monocentric p.p.lation of CHC, dysthyroidism, esp.cially hyp.rthyroidism, develop.d in 10% of p.tients, Low fibrosis was found to be a p.edictive factor of dysthyroidism, Thyroid disorder recovered in 16/30 p.tients （53%） and recovery was better in the non-autoimrnune form,

Increased intestinal p.rmeability in inflammatory bowel diseases assessed by iohexol test

AIM:To study intestinal p.rmeability(Ip. and its relationship.to the disease activity in p.tients with inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)-Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC).METHODS:Fifty-eight p.tients with active IBD(32 with CD and 26 with UC) and 25 healthy controls consented to p.rticip.te in the *** clinical activity of CD was estimated using the Crohn's Disease Activity Index(CDAI),and the endoscop.c activity of UC using the Mayo scoring *** was assessed by the rise in levels of iohexol,which was administered orally(25 mL,350 mg/mL) 2 h after *** and six hours later serum(SIC mg/L) and urine(UIC g/mol) iohexol concentrations were determined by a validated Hp.C-UV ***:In the CD group.SIC values at 3 h(2.95 ± 2.11 mg/L) and at 6 h after ingestion(2.63 ± 2.18 mg/L) were significantly higher comp.red to those of healthy subjects(1.25 ± 1.40 mg/L and 1.11 ± 1.10 mg/L,resp.ctively,p.p.tients,but the differences were significant only for UIC at 6 *** p.sitive correlation(p.p.assessed by SIC at 3 h(r = 0.60) and 6 h(r = 0.74) after the *** comp.rison to controls,SIC and UIC of UC p.tients were higher in the two studied p.riods,but the differences were significant at 6 h *** higher values of SIC(p.p.tients with severe endoscop.c activity of UC comp.red to those of p.tients with mild and moderate activity(3.68 ± 3.18 vs 0.92 ± 0.69 mg/L).CONCLUSION:Serum levels of iohexol at 3 h and 6 h after its ingestion reflect increased Ip.which is related to the disease activity in p.tients with IBD.

Selectivity in feeding p.eferences and ranging p.tterns in sp.der monkeys Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis of northeastern Yucatan p.ninsula, Mexico

The sp.der monkey, a fruit sp.cialist and imp.rtant seed disp.rsal agent in the Neotrop.cs, is an endangered p.imate due to habitat loss, hunting and the p.t trade. Sp.der monkeys have been the subject of a few studies in Central and South Ame- rica, but little is known about the diet and ranging for this p.imate in southern Mexico. Here we rep.rt the results of a six-month long study （October 2010 to March 2011） of the feeding p.eferences and ranging p.tterns of the Yucatan sp.der monkey Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis living in the ＂Ya＇ax＇che＂ reserve by the Caribbean coast in northeast Yucatan p.ninsula. Focal animal and scan samp.ing as well as Gp. tracking were used to document sp.der monkey feeding behavior, location of food trees and ranging in the reserve. The sp.der monkeys used 36 sp.cies of p.ants （94% trees; n = 432） and six non tree morp.osp.cies as a source of food. Six tree sp.cies accounted for 〉~80% of total feeding time and for 74% of all trees used. Fruits accounted for 59% of total feeding time, followed by leaves （35%）, p.lm p.ths （5%） and other p.ant p.rts （1%）. Total range used by the monkeys was esti- mated at 43% of semievergreen rainforest habitat available （ca 40ha）. Range use was not random with segments showing light, moderate and heavy use; the use of different areas of their range varied monthly and was closely linked to the sp.tial disp.rsion of the trees used for food [Current Zoology 59 （1）： 125-134, 2013].

Acute Toxicity and Behavioural Resp.nses of African Catfish,Clarias gariep.nus to Amine Salt of 2,4-D

Fingerlings of African catfish,Clarias gariep.nus [mean total length,(7.0±1.0) cm SD;mean weight,(3.0±0.7) g SD] were exp.sed to acute concentrations of amine salt of 2,4-D(0,50,200,250,350,and 400 mg/L) to determine the behavioural resp.nses and *** raised in aquaria the fish became *** beat frequencies(op.rcular and tail beat frequency p.r minute,OBF and TBF) of the exp.sed fish declined with increase in the exp.sure duration and concentration,but the reverse was the case with p.rcent *** variables signifi cantly differed at both the exp.sure duration and concentration of the toxicant(p.0.05).Anova of the linear regression between variables-OBF,TBF and mortality on exp.sure duration indicated a strong p.sitive relationship.p.0.001) with the entire variables excep. mortality and exp.sure *** and TBF were inversely correlated with exp.sure duration(r=-0.99;p.0.05).The 96 h lethal concentration was 165.36(133.29～190.51,C.L.) mg/L and the median lethal time at the highest concentration was 20.41(11.87～27.46) *** results from this study revealed that 2,4-D was very toxic to *** under laboratory conditions and its ap.lication should therefore,be restricted in the field.

Effect of dep.ytinization on bioavailability of iron,calcium and zinc from infant cereals assessed in the Caco-2 cell model

AIM： To test the effect of the dep.ytinization of three different commercial infant cereals on iron, calcium, and zinc bioavailability by estimating the up.ake, retention, and transp.rt by Caco-2 cells. METHODS： Both dep.ytinized （by adding an exogenous p.ytase） and non-dep.ytinized infant cereals were digested using an in vitro digestion p.otocol adap.ed to the gastrointestinal conditions of infants younger than 6 too. Mineral cell retention, transp.rt, and up.ake from infant cereals were measured using the soluble fraction of the simulated digestion and the Caco-2 cells. RESULTS： Dep.ytinization of infant cereals significantly increased （p.〈 0.05） the cell up.ake efficiency （from 0.66%-6.05% to 3.93%-13%）, retention （from 6.04%-16.68% to 14.75%-20.14%） and transp.rt efficiency （from 0.14%-2.21% to 1.47%-6.02%）, of iron, and the up.ake efficiency （from 5.0%-35.4% to 7.3%-41.6%） and retention （from 4.05%-20.53% to 14.45%-61.3%） of zinc, whereas calcium only cell up.ake showed a significant increase （p.〈 0.05） after removing p.ytate from most of the samp.es analyzed. A p.sitive relationship.（p.〈 0.05） between mineral solubility and the cell up.ake and transp.rt efficiencies was observed. CONCLUSION： Removing p.ytate from infant cereals had a beneficial effect on iron and zinc bioavailability when infant cereals were reconstituted with water. Since in develop.ng countries cereal-based comp.ementary foods for infants are usually consumed mixed with water, exogenous p.ytase additions could imp.ove the nutritional value of this weaning food.

Vaccines and recommendations for their use in inflammatory bowel disease

The p.tient with inflammatory bowel disease will be p.edisp.sed to numerous infections due their immune status. It is therefore imp.rtant to understand the immune and serologic status at diagnosis and to p.t the p.tient into an adap.ed vaccination p.ogram. This p.ogram would be ap.lied differently according to two p.tient group.: the immunocomp.omised and the non-immunocom-p.omised. In general, the first group.would avoid the use of live-virus vaccines, and in all cases, inflammatory bowel disease treatment would take p.ecedence over vaccine risk. It is imp.rtant to individualize vaccination schedules according to the typ. of p.tient, the treatment used and the disease *** addition, p.tient with inflammatory bowel disease should be considered for the following vaccines: varicella vaccine, human p.p.lloma virus, influenza, p.eumococcal p.lysaccharide vaccine and hep.titis B vaccine.
