Increasing evidence of a link between inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) and adverse cardiovascular events has emerged during the last *** 2014,an important number of meta-analyses and cohort studies clarified the subtle dangerous liaisons between gut inflammation and cardiovascular *** evidence suggests that patients with IBD have a significantly increased risk of myocardial infarction,stroke,and cardiovascular mortality,especially during periods of IBD *** populations(e.g.,women,young patients) may have an even greater *** effective treatment of IBD is aimed at disease remission and seems to reduce cardiovascular risk in these patients.A beneficial effect was demonstrated for salicylates,but not for steroids or *** necrosis factor-α antagonists,which are highly effective in the reduction of inflammation and in the restoration of the digestive mucosa,lead to conflicting cardiovascular effects,as they seem to reduce the risk for ischemic heart disease but increase the rate of cerebrovascular *** supplemental treatment strategies that may reduce the atherothrombotic risk during periods of IBD activity should be explored.

Tropical alpine ecosystems exhibit outstanding plant diversity and endemism while being particularly sensitive to the impacts of climate *** understanding spatiotemporal changes in plant species composition,richness and community structure along tropical alpine altitudinal gradients is of primary importance,both the functional and historical/biogeographic dimensions of vegetation diversity remain largely *** used Generalized Linear Models and multivariate analyses to assess changes in species,growth forms,and biogeographic groups richness and abundance,in response to habitat variables along an elevation gradient in seven summits(3800 to 4600 m asl)in the Venezuelan Andes,studied using the standardized approach of the GLORIA-Andes monitoring *** habitat variables assessed were soil temperature(-10 cm),soil organic matter,slope inclination,and substrate *** found 113 species,representing72 genera,32 families,13 growth forms,and seven biogeographic origins,that included 25%of endemic *** observed richer vegetation,both in terms of species and growth forms,in summits with higher soil temperatures and higher SOM content,as well as higher biogeographic origin richness with increasing soil *** presence of holarctic elements increased toward higher elevations,while the occurrence of austral antarctic elements increased toward lower *** results indicate that biogeographic and functional approaches to vegetation diversity capture well the effect of abiotic filtering on community structuring in these tropical alpine *** findings constitute an important baseline for monitoring vegetation dynamics linked to climate change in the Venezuelan Andes by highlighting the functional and historical perspective on vegetation analyses,in contrast with more traditional approaches,based only on taxonomic species diversity.

The effect of sodium reduction and Lactobacillus acidophilus addition(free or microencapsulated)on the quality parameters of requeijao cremoso processed cheese was assessed for 90 days at 5℃.Three formulations were prepared:(CONT)regular salt content and curd fusion(90℃/2 min),(FREE)reduced salt content+free probiotic culture added after curd fusion(90℃/2 min),and(MICRO)reduced salt content+microencapsulated probiotic culture added before curd fusion(70℃/5 min).FREE and MICRO formulations showed increased monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid content,improved health indices(decreases in thrombogenic index and increases in desirable fatty acid index),and altered rheological properties(higher consistency index,apparent viscosity,elastic properties,and gel strength).In addition,the MICRO formulation showed higher texture sensory acceptance and probiotic counts higher than 6 log CFU/g during storage and simulated gastrointestinal ***,microencapsulation of probiotics with spray chilling represents an innovative solution in requeijao cremoso processed cheese.

Type 2 diabetes （T2D） is an important risk factor for developing dementias, including Alzheimer＇s disease （AD）. Hyperinsulin- emia and glucose intolerance, as features of T2D, might increase the neurodegeneration process, synaptic loss and brain atrophy, leading to cognitive impairment observed in AD. Also, adult neurogenesis seems to be impaired in AD models. Therefore, we have studied morphological alterations, cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system （CNS） from a classical model of T2D, the db/db mouse, and in a prediabetes insulin-resistant model, obtained after long-term high fat diet （HFD） administration to C57B1/6 mice. Db/db mice showed an age-dependent cortical and hippocampal atrophy, whereas in HFD mice cortex and hippocampus were preserved. Neurogen- esis and cell proliferation were increased in young db/db mice, when compared with control mice, whereas no differences were detected in the prediabetic model. We also detected significant correlations between metabolic parameters and central atrophy, altered proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system. Altogether these data support that glycaemia control in elderly patients, could help to control central alterations and improve dementia prognosis.

Aim： To determine the effect of two different extracts of red maca in male rats. Methods： Prostatic hyperplasia was induced in male rats with testosterone enanthate （TE）. The study comprised six groups： one control group （group 1）, one group treated with TE （group 2）, two groups treated with TE and aqueous extract of red maca （groups 3 and 4）, one group treated with hydroalcoholic extract of red maca （group 5） and one group treated with finasteride （0.1 mg, group 6）. Differences in the aqueous extract dependent on the length of time of boiling, whether for 2 or 3 hours, for groups 3 and 4 was assessed. Extracts of red maca contained 0.1 mg of benzylglucosinolate. Thereafter, a doseresponse effect of different doses of benzylglucosinolates （0.02-0.08 mg） in red maca extracts was assessed. Results： Prostate weight was similar in rats treated with freeze-dried aqueous extract of red maca prepared after 2 and 3 hours of boiling. Freeze-dried aqueous extract of red maca, hydroalcoholic extract of red maca and finasteride reduced prostate weight in rats with prostatic hyperplasia. No difference was observed between the data obtained from aqueous extract or hydroalcoholic extract of red maca. A dose dependent reduction of prostate weight was observed with the increase of the dose of benzylglucosinolates in red maca extracts. Conclusion： The present study showed that hydroalcoholic or aqueous extract of red maca containing 0.1 mg of benzylglucosinolate can reduce prostate size in male rats in which prostatic hyperplasia had been induced by TE.

Salinity Tolerance in Argentinean Population of <i>Bromus catharticus</i>. Variability and Direct and Indirect Effects on Seedling Characters

The aim of this research was to evaluate the salinity tolerance in prairie grass populations at the seedling stage quantifying the variability and the influence of physiological traits related to it. Salinity tolerance, in Bromus catharticus Vahl (prairie grass) populations collected in different environments of the Pampean Phytogeography region (Argentine) was evaluated at the seedling stage, using controlled condition of temperature and light. It was adopted a completely randomized design using 3 plots with three plants each one per population and two levels of treatment: 0 mM and 100 mM NaCl. Morphological, biomass and membrane stability root and shoot traits were studied. A factorial ANOVA with interaction was estimated. Then one way ANOVA for all seedling traits in both treatments allowed estimating variance components, coefficient of genotypic determination (CGD) and variation index (VI). Comparisons between populations were made using Tukey test (at 5% of probability). Phenotypic correlations among traits were calculated and then a path coefficient analysis separated direct and indirect effects at 100 and 0 mM NaCl. No significant interactions “Population × Treatment” were found for any character. The saline stress caused a pairing in the population means for the most traits. Coefficients of variation were mainly higher when the seedlings grew without stress (0 mM) because it allowed a greater potential genotypic expression. The absence of significant interactions denotes a good homeostatic capacity of the prairie grass facing that abiotic stress. Leaf length, shoot length and root dry matter were the variables with the largest direct and indirect effects. Sleep Quality in Non Dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease: Associated Factors and Influence on Prognosis

Deficient sleep quality (SQ) has been linked with a higher hospitalization rate and mortality in dialysis patients, however the prevalence of sleep disorders and their influence on prognosis in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess factors related with SQ in CKD patients (stages I-IV) followed in a nephrology outpatient clinic as well as the long-term impact of SQ on patient’s outcome. Between January and May 2008, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was self-administered by 122 patients (68 males and 54 females) with a mean age of 65 years. Patients were classified as “good” (global PSQI < 6) and “poor” sleepers (global PSQI ≥ 6). We identified 66 (54%) poor sleepers (PS), characterized by an older age (66 ± 14.2 vs 57 ± 17.0, p < 0.01), female predominance (59% vs 26%, p < 0.01) and worse renal function (49 ± 19.1 vs 57 ± 23.2 ml/min, p < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between phosphate and PSQI score (r = 0.234, p = 0.01), however no correlation with calcium or PTH. Vitamin D was also lower in PS (17 ± 7.2 vs 23 ± 15.1 ng/ml, p < 0.05). Until June 2015, hospitalization rate was higher among PS (64% vs 44%, p < 0.05). In this period, there was also a trend towards higher mortality for PS (18% vs 16%). In summary, over 50% of CKD patients have poor SQ, which was associated with older age, female gender, worse renal function, lower vitamin D and higher phosphate levels. Deficient sleep was associated with a greater probability of hospitalization and might be a prognostic marker in CKD.
