Weather and climate conditions drive the evolution of tropical glaciers which play an important role as water reservoirs for Peruvian inhabitants in the arid coast and semi-arid Andean *** scarcity of long-term high-quality observations over Peruvian glaciers has motivated the extensive use of reanalysis data to describe the climatic evolution of these ***,the representativeness and uncertainties of these reanalysis products over these glaciers are still poorly *** study evaluates the ability of the ERA-Land reanalysis(ERAL)to reproduce hourly and monthly 2 m air temperature and relative humidity(T2m and Rh2m,respectively)over several Peruvian *** compared the ERAL with data from four on-glacier automatic weather stations(AWS),whose hourly time series were completed with nearby stations,for the period January 2017 to December *** indicates a better performance of the reanalysis for T2m(r>0.80)than for Rh2m(~0.4n all four *** the observations,both parameters show a daily cycle influenced by the presence of the *** influence is more prominent during the dry months when the so-called glacier damping and cooling effects are *** a monthly time scale,the ERAL validation for both parameters are better in wet outer tropical sites(RmSE between±0.2℃ for T2m and between 3%-7% for Rh2m)rather than in dry outer tropical sites(RmSE between±0.2℃ for T2m and between 3%-7% for Rh2m).Among all sites considered in the study,the Rh2m bias is the highest in the Cavalca glacier(correlation of 0.81;RmSE 13%,mAE 11% and bias 8.3%)and the lowest in Artesonraju glacier(correlation of 0.96;RmSE 3%;mAE 2.3% and bias-0.8%).Based on certain considerations outlined in this paper,it is appropriate to use ERAL to characterize T2m and Rh2m conditions on Peruvian glaciers,particularly in the wet outer tropics.

Comparison of bioavailability and transporters gene expression of four iron fortificants added to infant cereals

Iron deficiency is one of the most important nutritional disorders around the world. To reduce this health problem in infants, most countries have developed different iron fortification programs as a long-term strategy. However, it is necessary to select the best iron source to get the highest bioavailability with the lowest impact on the organoleptic properties of the foods. The aim of this research was to assess the in vitro bioavailability and intestinal cellular transport of four iron sources (electrolytic iron: EI, ferrous fumarate: FF, a micronized and dispersible ferric pyrophosphate: mDFP, and ferrous sulphate heptahydrated: FSH) used to fortify infant cereals. Fortified cereals were in vitro digested and soluble fractions were then incubated in Caco-2 cells to study iron retention, transport and uptake. moreover, mRnA expression of iron transporters and ferritin formation were also measured in cells incubated with the iron standard salts. Iron solubility, uptake percentage, transport and uptake efficiencies by the Caco-2 cells were significantly higher in cereals fortified with FSH than with EI, obtaining intermediate values for the other two iron fortificants. mDFP induced higher expression of iron transporters Zip-14 and HEPH than other iron sources. FSH promoted the highest iron storage protein ferritin, followed by FF and mDFP, while EI presented the lowest in vitro bioavailability due to its low solubility. This work demonstrated that iron absorption, storage, and gene expression of transporters depend on the source of iron. These are important challenges to be taken into consideration when assessing the potential of iron fortificants.

The determination of sediment yield in catchments based on the sediment trapped by check dams is becoming a subject of *** fact,several methods have been developed in recent years to estimate the sediment retained by check *** complexity,precision and accuracy of each method vary *** this study,we evaluate the sediment trapped by check dams comparing the Sections method respect to the Prism,Pyramid,DTms and Trapezoid *** analyzed a sample of 25 check dams(α-1=90%;ε=10%) in the Saldana badlands(Spain).The results showed that the Sections method offered a volume of retained sediment between the others,which gave an absolute variation from 22%to40%.The high variability of the check dam and sediment wedge sizes made necessary to compare methods in groups combining both *** significant differences in sediment volumes could be found between the methods for very small(height(h):1.8-2.3 m;trapped volume(V):6-102 m3) or large check dams(h > 2.3 m;V:165-387 m3),while significant differences are found for small(h m;V:1-229 m3) or middle-sized check dams(h:2.2-3.2 m;V:65-235 m3).nevertheless,volume differences between groups ranged up to + 25%.For these reason,the size of the check dam,the shape of the sediment wedge and the accuracy of the measure methods must considered when selecting an appropriate method to obtain the volume of retained sediment by check dams.A correct estimation of the sediment retention is needed to evaluate the role and efficiency of check dams in restoration projects or to estimate sediment yields.

Dear Editor,One of the most serious issues in modern oncology is the ineffectiveness of treatments in destroying tumours,which leads to tumour recurrence and,ultimately,patient *** phenomenon is caused by conventional therapies’fractional killing of tumour cells,which can also cause resistant cells to spread.1 We analysed chemotherapy-resistant cells and discovered that they are smaller than untreated cells(Fig.1a).The fact that this phenomenon occurs in all tested cell types(Hela,A549,Huh7,and mCF7)and regardless of the chemotherapy regimen(TRAIL,Camptothecin,Doxorubicin)suggests that it is a widespread phenomenon(Fig.1a,Supplementary Fig.S1).

Agriculture has a close relationship with nature,but it can also be the source of negative and permanent environmental *** use of pesticides in modern agriculture is a common practice,but their side effects on the environment cannot be *** this study,we evaluated a combination of solarization and ozonation techniques for the elimination of six amide pesticides(boscalid,chlorantraniliprole,cyflufenamid,fluopyram,napropamide,and propyzamide)in *** experiments were performed with four different soils to assess the efficiency of this methodology at different soil temperatures and ozone dosages under laboratory conditions,and then a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted under controlled conditions during *** days after the onset of the experiments,higher degradation percentages of amide pesticides were observed in ozonized soils than in other treated soils,particularly when ozone was applied at 10 cm soil *** results show that the utilization of ozonation,along with solarization,represents a valid method for degrading residues of the studied pesticides and suggest that this combined technology may be a promising tool for remediating pesticide-polluted soils.

Stem cell pluripotency and differentiation are global processes regulated by several pathways that have been studied intensively over recent years. nitric oxide(nO) is an important molecule that affects gene expression at the level of transcription and translation and regulates cell survival and proliferation in diverse cell types. In embryonic stem cells nO has a dual role, controlling differentiation and survival, but the molecular mechanisms by which it modulates these functions are not completely defined. nO is a physiological regulator of cell respiration through the inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase. many researchers have been examining the role that nO plays in other aspects of metabolism such as the cellular bioenergetics state, the hypoxia response and the relationship of these areas to stem cell stemness.
