In the last few decades,the use of environmental radionuclides,particularly caesium-137(^(137)Cs),represented one of the most valid methods for estimating soil ***,the cost associated with the use of the equipment needed for radiometric analyses is still high and,for this reason,finding more easily measurable indicators can be *** is a strong correlation between^(137)Cs,organic carbon(OC),nitrogen(N)and water soluble phenols(WSP)exists,indicating the latter parameters as possible early indicators of soil *** on the above assumptions,the main purpose of this work is to identify specific soil chemical parameters able to indicate early triggering of soil ***,several soil parameters such as pH,electric conductivity(EC),WSP,OC,N and C/N have been evaluated against^(137)Cs and on a comparative *** addition,since the rate of soil erosion depends on the degree of coverage and canopy structure,two different tree species(Pinus nigra laricio *** Fagus sylvatica l.)have been considered in this contribution in which ten different scenarios of forest management have been *** results show that the reduction in tree cover of managed sites triggers erosion and nutrient loss *** has been observed that the loss of^(137)Cs,compared to the control areas,is closely correlated with those of WSP,OC and *** parameters(WSP,OC and N),more easily assessable,can be a valid tool to understand easily,triggering of erosive phenomena.

Effects of l-carnitine in patients with hepatic encephalopathy

AIM： To evaluate the influence of locarnitine on mental conditions and ammonia effects on patients with hepatic encephalopathy （HE）. METHODS： One hundred and fifty patients （10 patients with alcoholism, 41 patients with hepatitis virus B infection, 78 patients with hepatitis C virus infection, 21 patients with cryptogenetic cirrhosis） meeting the inclusion criteria were randomized into group A receiving a 90-d treatment with l-carnitine （2 g twice a day） or into group B receiving placebo in double blind. RESUlTS： At the end of the study period, a significant decrease in NI-14 fasting serum levels was found in patients with hepatic encephalopathy （P〈0.0S） after the treatment with levocarnitine （lC）. Significant differences were also found between symbol digit modalities test and block design in patients with hepatic encephalopathy （P〈0.0S）. CONClUSION： Results of our study suggest an important protective effect of l-carnitine against ammonia-precipitated encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients.

The recent discovery of immune checkpoints inhibitors, especially anti-programmed cell death protein 1(PD-1)and anti-programmed cell death protein ligand 1(PD-l1) monoclonal antibodies, has opened new scenarios in the management of non-small cell lung cancer(NSClC) and this new class of drugs has achieved a rapid development in the treatment of this disease. However, considering the costs of these drugs and the fact that only a subset of patients experience long-term disease control, the identification of predictive biomarkers for the selection of candidates suitable for treatment has become a priority. The research focused mainly on the expression of the PD-l1 receptor on both tumor cells and/or immune infiltrates determined by immunohistochemistry(IHC). However, different checkpoint inhibitors were tested, different IHC assays were used, different targets were considered(tumor cells, immune infiltrates or both) and different expression thresholds were employed in clinical trials. In some trials the assay was used prospectively to select the patients, while in other trials it was evaluated retrospectively. Some confusion emerges, which makes it difficult to easily compare the literature data and to translate them in practice management. This mini-review shows the possibilities and pitfalls of the PD-l1 expression to predict the activity and efficacy of anti PD1/PD-l1 monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of NSClC.

Fagonia cretica l. is an important component of Mediterranean dry grasslands and a rare and isolated species of Italian flora. In this study, an assessment is presented on the distribution, habitat, and conservation status of F. cretica in Italy. The results of field investigation and herbarium analysis show that this species grows in a small area within the southern Calabria region characterized by a warmest and driest Mediterranean climate on the Italian peninsula. F. cretica is a semi-desert plant species growing in Italy in only one peripheral and isolated population at the northern limit of its distribution. Plant community analysis, using the phytosociological method, shows that F. cretica grows in wintergreen perennial dry grasslands dominated by lygeum {partum and Hyparrhenia hirta. F. crelica plant communities are located in thermo-xeric habits such as south-, southeast- and east-facing slopes on clays and sandy clays in southern Calabria. The population of F. cretica is fragmented in six neighbouring localities, with two of which belonging to a Site of Community Importance （SC1）. The conservation status of F. cretica population is not very good, and is defined as ＂Critically Endangered＂ in accordance with IUCN criteria. There are many threats affecting the F. crelica population in ltaly, primarily the changes in land uses due to urban expansion and reforestation with exotic plants. The southern end of the Italian peninsula hosts other plants from thermo-xeric habits that do not adapt to the current local climate. This territory can be considered as a microrefugia for plants currently distributed in the arid territory of the southern Mediterranean. These results contribute to the discussion of some conservation measures, and the possibility of establishing a micro-reserve. For all these reasons, we propose to include F. cretica in the lists of protected plant species at regional （Calabria） and country （Italy） scales in Italy.

AIM:To investigate the effects of quercetin and genistein on colon cancer cell proliferation and their estrogen receptorβ(ERβ)***:Colon cancer cells were stably transfected with a mammalian expression vector to overexpress ERβ(HCT8-β8-expressing cells)or a control vector(HCT8-pSV2neo-expressing cells).The proliferation of these cells was examined after treatment with quercetin or genistein(5-100μmol/l),or 10 nmol/l17β-estradiol(17β-E2).Cell viability was examined by acridine orange staining following treatments for 48 or144 *** of quercetin and genistein on ERβtranscriptional transactivation were examined by luciferase activity in HCT8-β8-expressing cells transiently transfected with a pEREtklUC reporter *** addition,the regulation of ERβtranscription by phytoestrogens and 17β-E2 was examined by quantitative polymerase chain ***:Proliferation of HCT8-β8-expressing cells was not reduced low doses(5μmol/l)of quercetin and genistein,while it was reduced at 25-50μmol/l with an effect similar to 10 nmol/l 17β-*** with doses of phytoestrogens≥75μmol/l completely blocked cell growth and reduced overall cell counts,however no effects at any dose were observed in HCT8-pSV2neoexpressing *** results were supported by viability staining that revealed acridine orange-stained lysosomes with high doses or extended treatment *** and quercetin(50μmol/l)significantly increased ER-responsive luciferase activity similar to 10nmol/l 17β-E2(Pl/l),as well as 10 nmol/l 17β-E2significantly increased ERβmRNA levels in HCT8-β8-expressing cells(Plls with 50μmol/l quercetin or 10 nmol/l 17β-E2 significantly increased ERβmRNA levels compared to untreated controls(Plute levels were much lower than in HCT8-β8-expressing ***:The antitumorigenic effects of the phytoestrogenic compounds querc

The corrosion and tribocorrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V/xTiN(x=0,5,10 and 15,vol.%)composites fabricated by solid-state sintering and their relationship with the microstructure and microhardness were *** body conditions such as a temperature of 37℃ and a simulated body fluid were *** main results demonstrated a microstructural change caused by theα-Ti stabilization due to solid-solution of nitrogen(N)into the titanium(Ti)lattice,producing a maximum hardening effect up to 109%for the Ti64 matrix by using 15 vol.%*** potentials of composites changed to more noble values with the TiN particle addition,while corrosion current density of samples increased as an effect of the remaining porosity,decreasing the corrosion resistance of ***,changes to a less passive behavior were observed for samples with 15 vol.%*** non-passive behavior of composites resulted in the reduction of the potential drops during rubbing in tribocorrosion ***,an improvement of up to 88%of the wear rate of composites was seen from the solid-solution *** results allowed to understand the relationship between composition and sintering parameters with the improved tribocorrosion performance of materials.

Within the framework of the circular economy,the waste litchi’s skins were upgraded and transformed into electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).The waste litchi’s skins were pyrolyzed,activated,and then used as carbon support for fabricating metal–nitrogen–carbons(M–N–Cs)which belong to a promising class of platinum group metal-free *** activated char was functionalized with transition metal(Fe,Ni,and Co)-phthalocyanine(Pc)in monometallic and bimetallic fashion by subjecting it to a thermal treatment at 600 and 900◦*** samples functionalized at 900℃ showed higher performance for HER due to the formation of metal nanoparticles,whereas the samples functionalized at 600℃ showed higher performance for ***,sample Ni–Co 900 had an overpotential of−0.38 V for HER,while the sample Fe 600 was the most active electrocatalyst for ORR by demonstrating the onset potential of∼0.9 V(a half-wave potential of∼0.81 V)with the least production of unwanted peroxide anion.

AIM： To evaluate the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of Crohn＇s disease （CD） and ulcerative colitis （UC）, we investigated the single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） of NOD2/CARD15 （R702W, Gg08R and l1007finsC）, and Toll-like receptor 4 （TlR4） genes （D299G and T399I） in a selected inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） population coming from Southern Italy. METHODS： Allele and genotype frequencies of NOD2/ CARD15 （R702W, Gg08R and l1007finsC） and TlR4 （D299G and T399I） SNPs were examined in 133 CD patients, in 45 UC patients, and in 103 healthy controls. A genotype-phenotype correlation was performed. RESUlTS： NOD2/CARD15 R702W mutation was significantly more frequent in CD （9.8%） than in controls （2.4%, P = 0.001） and in UC （2.3%, P = 0.03）. No significant difference was found between UC patients and control group （P 〉 0.05）. In CD and UC patients, no significant association with G908R variant was found. l1007finsC SNP showed an association with CD （9.8%） compared with controls （2.9%, P = 0.002） and UC patients （2.3%, P = 0.01）. Moreover, in CD patients, G908R and l1007finsC mutations were significantly associated with different phenotypes compared to CD wild-type patients. No association of IBD with the TlR4 SNPs was found in either cohort （allele frequencies： D299G-controls 3.9%, CD 3.7%, UC 3.4%, P 〉 0.05; T399I-controls 2.9%, CD 3.0%, UC 3.4%, P 〉 0.05）. CONClUSION： These findings confirm that, in our IBD patients selected from Southern Italy, the NOD2/ CARD15, but not TlR4 SNPs, are associated with increased risk of CD.
