In recent years, carbonate clumped isotopes(expressed as Δ47, quantifying the excess abundance of CO2 of mass 47(13 C18 O16 O) in carbonate relative to the theoretical random distribution) have been developed as a paleothermometer for reconstruction of surface paleoenvironments. This method is based on the temperature dependence of rare isotope ‘clumping’ into the same carbonate ion group in the carbonate mineral lattice. Because Δ47 is referenced to the random distribution of clumped isotopes, calculated from the carbonate isotopic composition, the extent of clumping is independent of the isotope composition of the water from which carbonate precipitates, providing unique advantages over many other paleotemperature proxies. The clumped isotope composition of corals, foraminifera, brachiopods and land snail shells, have been used to elucidate the temperatures at which the carbonates precipitated, thus reflecting the environmental temperature or indicating paleohydrological changes in combination with the shell oxygen isotope composition. Ostracods are microscopic crustaceans that secrete a bivalve carapace of low-magnesian calcite that is commonly preserved in lake sediments. The oxygen isotopic composition of ostracod shells in paleo-lakes has provided understanding of the evolution of lacustrine systems in the context of changes in climate and hydrology. Despite the frequent use of oxygen isotope in ostracod-based palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, there have been no studies of carbonate clumped isotopes in ostracods and their paleoenvironmental implications until now. In this study, the Δ47 values of recent ostracod shells form 9 lakes with different salinities on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were measured to evaluate the potential of ostracod Δ47 as a quantitative proxy of temperature. East Asian summer monsoon(EASM)precipitation affects the lives of billions of people and impacts the stability of fragile desert ecosystems in central Asia[1].Therefore,many studies have focused on understanding the variability of the EASM and its relationship with insolation,ice sheet,and C0_(2)forcings[1-3].Evidence for EASM variability is preserved in the eolian dust sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP),which highlight the importance of Northern Hemisphere(NH)ice sheets,C0_(2)levels,and insolation in controlling the strength of the EASM during the Quaternary[2].In contrast,Pliocene(5.3-2.6 Ma)proxy records of the EASM from the CLP reveal weak orbital signals,suggesting weak sensitivity to ice sheets,C0_(2)levels,and insolation forcing during this sustained warm period[4].These Pliocene proxy records also contrast model simulations which suggest high sensitivity of the EASM to orbital forcing(particularly precession)during this time[5].

The Late Permian–early Middle Triassic strata of the northern West Qinling area, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, are composed of sediment gravity flow deposits. Detailed sedimentary facies analysis indicates these strata were deposited in three successive deep-marine environments. The Late Permian–early Early Triassic strata of the Maomaolong Formation and the lowest part of the Longwuhe Formation define a NW–SE trending proximal slope environment. Facies of the Early Triassic strata composing the middle and upper Longwuhe Formation are consistent with deposition in a base-of-slope apron environment,whereas facies of the Middle Triassic Anisian age Gulangdi Formation are more closely associated with a base-of-slope fan depositional environment. The lithofacies and the spatial–temporal changes in paleocurrent data from these strata suggest the opening of a continental margin back-arc basin system during Late Permian to early Middle Triassic time in the northern West Qinling. U–Pb zircon ages for geochemically varied igneous rocks with diabasic through granitic compositions intruded into these deep-marine strata range from 250 to 234 Ma. These observations are consistent with extensional back-arc basin development and rifting between the Permian–Triassic Eastern Kunlun arc and North China block during the continent–continent collision and underthrusting of the South China block northward beneath the Qinling terrane of the North China block. Deep-marine sedimentation ended in the northern West Qinling by the Middle Triassic Ladinian age, but started in the southern West Qinling and Songpan-Ganzi to the south. We attribute these observations to southward directed rollback of Paleo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere, continued attenuation of the West Qinling on the upper plate, local post-rift isostatic compensation in the northern West Qinling area, and continued opening of a back-arc basin in the southern West Qinling and Songpan-Ganzi. Recognizing correct phasing relationship between paleoclimate records and insolation forcing is a prerequisite to assigning ages to, and studying climatic forcing mechanisms encoded in, sedimentary strata. High precipitation is usually assumed to correspond to high summer insolation of the region when tuning geological records to insolation target;this is the case even for the Miocene-Pliocene stratotype sections in the Mediterranean region. Here, using seven late Miocene paleomagnetic reversal ages determined from the Mediterranean stratotype sites as age tiepoints, we established a ～800-kyr-long kyrresolution late Miocene precipitation proxy record, based on magnetic parameters, from the Qaidam Basin, northern China, where modern precipitation occurs mainly during summers. All main orbital cycles are encoded in the record and precession is the strongest signal so that its ? to 1/10 harmonics are also clear in the record. Consistent with the tradition of orbital tuning, high precipitation is generally aligned with NH summer insolation at the obliquity band;however, at the precessional band, high precipitation is generally aligned with low NH summer（high NH winter insolation）. We interpret this inverse phasing relationship between the Qaidam precipitation record and NH summer insolation at the precessional band during the late Miocene as evidence for dominant winter precipitation in the Qaidam Basin transported by westerlies, suggesting a different precipitation regime in a warmer climate similar to the future. Furthermore, this study requires a revision to the traditionally used tuning strategy for westerly precipitation dominated regions at the precessional band.
