The free thermal vibration of functionally graded material(FGM) cylindrical shells containing porosities is investigated. Both even distribution and uneven distribution are taken into account. In addition, three thermal load types, i.e., uniform temperature rise(UTR), nonlinear temperature rise(NLTR), and linear temperature rise(LTR), are researched to explore their effects on the vibration characteristics of porous FGM cylindrical shells. A modified power-law formulation is used to describe the material properties of FGM shells in the thickness direction. Love’s shell theory is used to formulate the straindisplacement equations, and the Rayleigh-Ritz method is utilized to calculate the natural frequencies of the system. The results show that the natural frequencies are affected by the porosity volume fraction, constituent volume fraction, and thermal load. Moreover,the natural frequencies obtained from the LTR have insignificant differences compared with those from the NLTR. Due to the calculation complexity of the NLTR, we propose that it is reasonable to replace it by its linear counterpart for the analysis of thin porous FGM cylindrical shells. The present results are verified in comparison with the published ones in the literature.

The nonlinear vibration characteristics of the piezoelectric circular cylindrical nanoshells resting on an elastic foundation are analyzed. The small scale effect and thermo-electro-mechanical loading are taken into account. Based on the nonlocal elasticity theory and Donnell's nonlinear shell theory, the nonlinear governing equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived by employing Hamilton's principle. Then,the Galerkin method is used to transform the governing equations into a set of ordinary differential equations, and subsequently, the multiple-scale method is used to obtain an approximate analytical solution. Finally, an extensive parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of the nonlocal parameter, the external electric potential, the temperature rise, and the Winkler-Pasternak foundation parameters on the nonlinear vibration characteristics of circular cylindrical piezoelectric nanoshells.

The wave-particle duality of light is a controversial topic in modern physics. In this context, this work highlights the ability of the wave-nature of light on its own to account for the conservation of energy in light-matter interaction. Two simple fundamental properties of light as wave are involved: its period and its power P. The power P depends only on the amplitude of the wave’s electric and magnetic fields (Poynting’s vector), and can easily be measured with a power sensor for visible and infrared lasers. The advantage of such a wave-based approach is that it unveils unexpected effects of light’s power P capable of explaining numerous results published in current scientific literature, of correlating phenomena otherwise considered as disjointed, and of making predictions on ways to employ the electromagnetic (EM) waves which so far are unexplored. In this framework, this work focuses on determining the magnitude of the time interval that, coupled with light’s power P, establishes the energy conserved in the exchange of energy between light and matter. To reach this goal, capacitors were excited with visible and IR lasers at variable average power P. As the result of combining experimental measurements and simulations based on the law of conservation of energy, it was found that the product of the period of the light by its power P fixes the magnitude of the energy conserved in light’s interaction with the capacitors. This finding highlights that the energy exchanged is defined in the time interval equal to the period of the light’s wave. The validity of the finding is shown to hold in light’s interaction with matter in general, e.g. in the photoelectric effect with x-rays, in the transfer of electrons between energy levels in semiconducting interfaces of field effect transistors, in the activation of photosynthetic reactions, and in the generation of action potentials in retinal ganglion cells to enable vision in vertebrates. Introduction. Non- Hispanic black women are less often diagnosed with endometrial cancer than are non- Hispanic white women, but are more likely to die of their disease. Reasons for this disparity in outcome are not well understood. Methods. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End- Results Program data were used to sample women newly diagnosed in 1998 with cancer of the corpus uteri. A total of 711 women with no previous diagnosis of cancer were selected. Women with sarcoma were not eligible for the study. We then sought to verify the therapy provided each woman with her treating physician. Results. Non- Hispanic black women were diagnosed with higher stage, grade, poor histologic subtype, and greater extension of the tumor than were non- Hispanic white women. Hispanic women were diagnosed with more favorable tumor characteristics than non- Hispanic black women, but less favorable than non- Hispanic white women. The use of radiation and chemotherapy increased with stage. Conclusions. Our study did not show any difference in recommended therapy for women with uterine adenocarcinoma among NH black women, NH white women, and Hispanic women. We must look for other factors, therefore, to explain the disparities in cancer outcome observed among NH black women with endometrial cancer.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of myomectomy on in vitro fertilization-emb ryo transfer (IVF-ET) and oocyte donation cycle outcome. Design: Retrospective case-controlled study of consecutive fresh IVF-ET and oocyte donation patients during a 2-year interval. Setting: Private assisted reproductive technology (A RT) center. Patient(s): Patients with submucosal leiomyomata resected hysterosco pically (group A: 15 oocyte donor recipients; group 1 = 31 IVF-ET patients) and those with intramural components or strictly intramural leiomyomata that distor ted or impinged upon the endometrial cavity resected at laparotomy (group B = 26 oocyte donor recipients; group 2 = 29 IVF-ET patients). Intervention(s): Precy cle hysteroscopic or abdominal myomectomy and subsequent fresh IVF-ET or oocyte donation. Main Outcome Measure(s): Results of controlled ovarian hyperstimulati on as well as ongoing pregnancy and implantation rates were evaluated in compari son with contemporaneous patient groups without such lesions (group C = 552 oocy te donor recipients; group 3: 896 IVF-ET patients). Result(s): As would be expe cted, the mean number and size of leiomyomata were significantly larger in patie nts who underwent abdominal myomectomy. However, neither ongoing pregnancy nor i mplantation rates were significantly different in comparison with controls among either oocyte donor recipients (group A: 86.7%, 57.8%; group B: 84.6%, 55.2 %; group C 77%, 49.1%). The findings were similar for those undergoing IVF-E T in comparison with controls (group 1: 61%, 24%; group 2: 52%, 26%; group 3 : 53%, 23%). Conclusion(s): Precycle resection of appropriately selected clini cally significant leiomyomata results in IVF-ET or oocyte donation cycle outcom es that are similar to controls.
