Impact of radiative cooling on the energy performance of courtyards in Mediterranean climate

Radiative cooling has proven to be a useful tool to address the problems of lack of comfort and excessive energy consumption in situations of high temperatures,overheating and heat ***,incorporating courtyards in warm climate zones has been found to be highly beneficial in addressing similar ***,there is interest in analyzing the combined effects of both:radiative cooling and *** paper presents an analysis of the impact of the application of radiative cooling on a courtyard using a comprehensive simulation approach that includes a CFD model for the thermodynamic airflow in the adjacent roofs and inside the courtyard,equations for the transient heat conduction through roofs,walls and courtyard slabs,and a hybrid raytracing-radiosity model for the evaluation of the solar radiation reaching the building surfaces and its reflections,both of specular and diffuse origin,and for the calculation of the thermal radiation exchange,especially with the *** results show that in the hot season,the courtyard with radiative cooling always provides lower temperatures than the initial courtyard does,with a temperature range of 18.33℃to 33.78℃,compared to a range of 19.32℃to 38.00℃in the initial courtyard,and producing a greater difference with outdoor temperatures that can reach 12℃versus 8℃for the reference *** addition,it was found that the courtyard with radiative cooling is able to significantly reduce the observed nighttime overheating by providing lower temperatures than the outdoor temperatures in the 50%of the nights *** was also found that the thermal loads to achieve indoor thermal comfort in the spaces adjacent to the courtyard were reduced by 63.46%to 69.85%.

A frozen mummy was found in Cerro Aconcagua (Argentina)in 1985(Fig.1a-c).Archaeologists identified this mummy as a seven-year-old Inca sacrifice victim living at the time of the Inca Civilization about 500years ago [1].The child was sacrificed following an Incan ritual known as *** complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome of this mummy was recently analyzed in Gomez-Carballa et al.[2].This mitogenome belongs to a new sub-branch of the Native American phylogeny named C1bi dated to approximately 14 thousand years ago (loja).Information retrieved from a large database of mtDNA profiles indicated the existence of a few closely related haplotypes in Peru (including one haplotype retrieved from ancient DNA of an individual belonging to the Wari Empire)and the Aymaras from *** these data suggested a Peruvian Inca origin for this C1bi haplotype,in good agreement with archaeological reports [1].

Sintering and Wear Behavior of a FeCrCB Hardfacing Alloy Applied by Tape Casting: A Study of Cooling Rate Effect

This study presents a simple process to deposit a hardfacing coating on a steel substrate, based on the sintering of metallic powder applied by tape casting (by a slurry of metallic powder suspension onto a steel substrate) thus avoiding the use of traditional welding processes and their variants. The effect of the cooling of hardfacing after the sintering process, by air at room temperature or by quenching in water, was studied. This new method ensures a good metallurgical bonding between the substrate steel and the hardfacing layer and shows mechanical property improvement on coated pieces, similar to those exhibited by hardfacing coatings produced by several kinds of welding processes. The characterization of the hardfacing coatings was made by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, microhardness and wear resistance according to the ASTM G65 standard. The characterization results show that the presented faces are: M7C3, M3C, MC, M2B and M23B6;there are three different phases in the micrograph glass phase, eutectic phase and hard phase with a volumetric fraction of 0.14, 0.20 and 0.66, respectively, for the air cooled and 0.15, 0.16 and 0.69 when quenched in water. The average microhardness value for the parts cooled in air was 832.5 HV and for that cooled in water was 958.9 HV, and the wear resistance was a mass loss of 0.219 and 0.128 g for parts cooled in air and water, respectively. These results show that the hardfacing coating could have twice the hardness and wear resistance than that observed for the boron steel used as a substrate.

Optimization of Micromechanical Cleavage Technique of Natural Graphite by Chemical Treatment

In this work,we report a method to improve the efficiency of the micromechanical cleavage technique to obtain few-layers graphene samples, from natural graphite flakes, which were previously submitted to two chemical treatment times with H2SO4(17 and 25 hours). After the chemical treatment times, Raman spectroscopy reveals a hydrogenation of the few-layer graphene samples, which were obtained from the treated graphite flakes. To analyze the hydrogenation of the samples, the G and 2D bands of the Raman spectra of the treated and un-treated samples were analyzed and compared, as well as the I(2D)/I(G) ratio, revealing a p-doping on the treated samples when compared with the untreated samples. Our studies could be of great importance to obtain larger and greater amount of few-layer graphene samples.

Research on biogeographical ancestry(BGA)is becoming of growing interest in forensic genetics and in the biomedical literature(1)Thus,for instance,the need to predict ethnicity of an unknown suspect based on DNA profiles found at the crime scene is of maximum interest in criminalistics[2],and several autosomal SNP panels have been designed and tested for BGA investigations[3,4].Most of these panels aim at discriminating three main continental groups(sub-Saharan Africans,Europeans,and Asians)by way of testing a number of ancestry informative markers(AIMs)that run from a few dozens to a few hundred[5](see more background in Supplementary data online).

DEAR EDITOR,Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 genome variation using a minimal number of selected informative sites conforming a genetic barcode presents several *** show that purely mathematical procedures for site selection should be supervised by known phylogeny(i)to ensure that solid tree branches are represented instead of mutational hotspots with poor phylogeographic proprieties,and(ii)to avoid phylogenetic *** propose a procedure that prevents information redundancy in site selection by considering the cumulative informativeness of previously selected sites(as a proxy for phylogenetic-based criteria).This procedure demonstrates that,for short barcodes(e.g.,11 sites),there are thousands of informative site combinations that improve previous *** also show that barcodes based on worldwide databases inevitably prioritize variants located at the basal nodes of the phylogeny,such that most representative genomes in these ancestral nodes are no longer in ***,coronavirus phylodynamics cannot be properly captured by universal genomic barcodes because most SARS-CoV-2 variation is generated in geographically restricted areas by the continuous introduction of domestic variants.

Spain has been one of the main global pandemic epicenters for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Here,we analyzed>41000 genomes(including>26000 high-quality(HQ)genomes)downloaded from the GISAID repository,including 1245(922 HQ)sampled in *** aim of this study was to investigate genome variation of novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and reconstruct phylogeographic and transmission patterns in *** analysis suggested at least 34 independent introductions of SARS-CoV-2 to Spain at the beginning of the *** lineages spread very successfully in the country,probably favored by super-spreaders,namely,A2 a4(7.8%),A2 a5(38.4%),A2 a10(2.8%),B3 a(30.1%),and B9(8.7%),which accounted for 87.9% of all genomes in the Spanish *** distinct feature of the Spanish SARS-Cov-2 genomes was the higher frequency of B lineages(39.3%,mainly B3 a+B9)than found in any other European *** B3 a,B9,(and an important sub-lineage of A2 a5,namely,A2 a5 c)most likely originated in Spain,the other three haplogroups were imported from other European *** B3 a strain may have originated in the Basque Country from a B3 ancestor of uncertain geographic origin,whereas B9 likely emerged in *** time of the most recent common ancestor(TMRCA)of SARS-CoV-2 suggested that the first coronavirus entered the country around 11 February 2020,as estimated from the TMRCA of B3 a,the first lineage detected in the ***,earlier claims that the D614 G mutation is associated to higher transmissibility is not consistent with the very high prevalence of COVID-19 in Spain when compared to other countries with lower disease incidence but much higher frequency of this mutation(56.4% in Spain vs.82.4% in rest of Europe).Instead,the data support a major role of genetic drift in modeling the micro-geographic stratification of virus strains across the country as well as the role of SARS-CoV-2 super-spreaders.

Bone infections following open bone fracture or implant surgery remain a challenge in the orthopedics *** order to avoid high doses of systemic drug administration,optimized local antibiotic release from scaffolds is required.3D additive manufactured(AM)scaffolds made with biodegradable polymers are ideal to support bone healing in non-union scenarios and can be given antimicrobial properties by the incorporation of *** this study,ciprofloxacin and gentamicin intercalated in the interlamellar spaces of magnesium aluminum layered double hydroxides(MgAl)andα-zirconium phosphates(ZrP),respectively,are dispersed within a thermoplastic polymer by melt compounding and subsequently processed via high temperature melt extrusion AM(~190◦C)into 3D *** inorganic fillers enable a sustained antibiotics release through the polymer matrix,controlled by antibiotics counterions exchange or pH ***,both antibiotics retain their functionality after the manufacturing process at high temperatures,as verified by their activity against both Gram+and Gram-bacterial ***,scaffolds loaded with filler-antibiotic do not impair human mesenchymal stromal cells osteogenic differentiation,allowing matrix mineralization and the expression of relevant osteogenic ***,these results suggest the possibility of fabricating dual functionality 3D scaffolds via high temperature melt extrusion for bone regeneration and infection prevention.

The aim of the current study was to determine the nature of the seasonal variability of the Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM) fluxes from the drainage basin to the estuary in a macrotidal region(Northeastern Brazil),and the estuarine response to a seawater intrusion regarding sediment deposition,which will support the understanding of the global transport of materials at the continent-ocean *** structure data was acquired using a Conductivity,Temperature,and Depth(CTD) probe with a sampling frequency of 4 *** particulate material was measured by gravimetric measurements applied to exact filtered volume *** outflows were measured through the use of an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) with frequency of 1.5 *** horizontal thermal and saline gradients varied from warmer and less saline waters(2014) to cooler and saline waters(2015).The gradient behavior when linked to volume transport and SPM flows,suggests a minimization of the fluvial flows in 2015,easing the advance of coastal water(CW) towards the inner estuary,leading to an inversion of the baroclinic pressure *** bottom saline front,generated by the entrance of coastal water masses,caused an increase in SPM concentrations due to increased fluid density,resuspension of previously deposited sediment,and erosion of *** concentrations of SPM indicate higher volume transport suggesting a hydraulic barrier due to the change/inversion of the baroclinic pressure gradient,resulting in water and material *** deposition was observed during neap tide,while during spring tide the material is resuspended,increasing the concentration,generating cycles of deposition and erosion during the neap-spring *** sediment in suspension that reach the estuary,even with low fluvial volume,stay in this environment forming new islands because of *** deposition rates or sediment cycling,if generated by the hydraulic barrier,may indicate that the flo

Efforts to improve crop yields with efficient use of fertilizers are needed to guarantee global food *** slow-release fertilizer systems(SRFs)encapsulated in biodegradable matrices are being developed to address this global *** a wide range of strategies for SRFs development,we explored a natureinspired solution based on the plant cuticle model and its function as a membrane for water and nutrient transport ***,Candelilla wax,extracted from Candelilla wild plants(Euphorbia antisyphilitica),is studied as a renewable slow-release matrix for fertilizers encapsulated by a modified spray chilling *** this process,microencapsulates containing 40 wt%of phosphorus fertilizer are obtained with distinctive sizes and chemical characteristics,presenting a slow-release *** the abovementioned features,novel insights into fertilizer release mechanisms based on plant cuticle models are discussed.
