objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and SKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 *** Phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HPLC)*** and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,***-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BAPTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this *** calcium measurements were made using *** HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,SKBR-3 and K562 cells(Pof HEAV-treated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(Pof K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(Pof Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(Pom lysosomes in K562 cells(Pore,BAPTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(Ponclusions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

In spite of the proximity between“CE(Circular Economy)”and“sustainability”,it is relevant to consider that a circular strategy is not inherently sustainable or free from significant environmental and social ***,assessing the impacts of CE initiatives and the promotion of circularity in development projects submitted to IA(Impact Assessment)processes are crucial,though the relationship between both fields has not been yet systematically ***,the present paper is focused on the identification of the links between IA and CE,based on the application of bibliometric techniques and Content *** outcomes revealed three thematic clusters in which significant overlaps were found:the 1st revealed LCA(Life Cycle Assessments)as the most used IA technique to assess the impacts of CE strategies,the 2nd encompasses climate change and environmental issues,and the 3rd cluster revealed that the integration of sustainability is the most frequent objective linking IA and CE,though characterized by different *** findings allow concluding that IA fosters the transition to CE by assessing the impacts of circular initiatives and CE strategies can improve IA practice by making it more effective.

The broke of a tailings dam from Vale S.A. destroyed a gigantic area killing 270 persons in Brumadinho/Brazil. organizing activities after a mass disaster is a complex process that requires the involvement of many people and resources in the laboratory. To DNA identification of the victims, a daunting work had to be made by DNA laboratory staff in a collaborative effort with many partners. Efforts to implement good practice guidelines in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) have revealed several important aspects that need to change in the forensic DNA laboratory. This article highlights the challenges of implementing DVI best practice guidelines in resource-poor settings, but with professionals from different sectors engaged in the same goal of briefly identifying victims and helping families and society.

The recovery of lithium from hard rock minerals has received increased attention given the high demand for this element. There- fore, this study optimized an innovative process, which does not require a high-temperature calcination step, for lithium extraction from le- pidolite. Mechanical activation and acid digestion were suggested as crucial process parameters, and experimental design and re- sponse-surface methodology were applied to model and optimize the proposed lithium extraction process. The promoting effect of amorphi- zation and the formation of lithium sulfate hydrate on lithium extraction yield were assessed. Several factor combinations led to extraction yields that exceeded 90%, indicating that the proposed process is an effective approach for lithium recovery.

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

The number of published studies related to the optimization of lithium extraction from low-grade ores has increased as the demand for lithium has grown. However, no study related to the kinetics of the concentration stage of lithium-containing minerals by froth flotation has yet been reported. To establish a factorial design of batch flotation experiments, we conducted a set of kinetic tests to determine the most selective alternative collector, define a range of pulp p H values, and estimate a near-optimum flotation time. Both collectors（Aeromine 3000 C and Armeen 12D） provided the required flotation selectivity, although this selectivity was lost in the case of pulp p H values outside the range between 2 and 4. Cumulative mineral recovery curves were used to adjust a classical kinetic model that was modified with a non-negative parameter representing a delay time. The computation of the near-optimum flotation time as the maximizer of a separation efficiency（SE） function must be performed with caution. We instead propose to define the near-optimum flotation time as the time interval required to achieve 95%–99% of the maximum value of the SE function.

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.

Background: We currently have international and national guidelines regarding the assessment and monitoring of clinical signs and humane endpoints in animals used in teaching and research, which make the performance of these activities mandatory for any experiment and professional working in this area. Assigning the severity of a research experiment is the result of an analysis of records of observations of the animal’s behavior, and clinical signs. The aim of this study was to describe the importance of carrying out a severity assessment associated with clinical and behavioral monitoring of rodents and rabbits during experimentation to maintain the welfare of these animals undergoing scientific research. Methods: The literature search was carried out using the following terms: “Monitoring”;“Humane endpoints”;“Animal welfare”, “Rodents”;“Rabbits”, and as connectors “and”;“or”, in the following databases: PubMed;LILACS/BIREME and SciELo. Results: A total of 987 articles were identified in the databases, and 20 of these studies were included in this review. Conclusions: Humane endpoint protocols and procedure severity tables are of the utmost importance, both from an ethical point and to refine the results of research conducted on laboratory animals. They should be drawn up jointly by the teams responsible for the project and the maintenance of the animals during the research period, and the data obtained should be published so that the scientific community can have access to it, helping to disseminate these practices, as well as helping to draw up new procedures. Monitoring and evaluating the welfare and clinical condition of animals undergoing scientific research procedures is the responsibility of the professors, researchers, veterinarians, and animal facility coordinators.
