Aims Soil plays an important role in the formation and heterogene-ity of habitats and thus can cause changes in vegetation struc-ture and plant *** differentiation between Cerrado/savanna and forest is well known,but the relationship between soil and habitats from savannic or forest formations still needs to be better understood,particularly in tropical ecotonal *** studied the association between attributes of plant com-munities,namely structure and diversity,and physicochemical characteristics of soils in the Caatinga domain at the transition to Cerrado in *** Chemical and physical analyses of soils were performed in samples of 38 plots from savannic formations and 30 plots from forest *** was characterized floristically and structurally in all plots,five habitats being assessed in each plant *** features and vegetation parameters were highly distinct among the different *** Findingsin general,forest habitats were more nutrient rich than savannic ***,soil variables showed effects both on vegetation structure and on its species diversity,more pronouncedly in the savannic *** were structurally distinct,and diversity differed between savannic and forest communities;however,a higher differentiation occurred when the savannic formation habitats were compared among *** plant diversity did not differ among forest formation habitats,soil attributes showed a close relationship with edaphic factors and can contribute for similar *** soil-vegetation relationship in highly diverse ecotonal landscapes is important from the conservation biology point of view and aid in the execution of proactive plans for the maintenance of ***,we noticed that diversity and soil behaves distinctly between savannic and forest communities.

Changes in Low Energy Neutron Counts Rate near Ground Level Associated to Steady Rain

Measurements of neutron count rate （0.025 eV to 10 MeV） at ground level were performed with a single free （He-3） tube detectorthat is located near ground level in Aeronautical Institute of Technology （ITA） Silo Jos6 dos Campos, SP, Brazil. The data were collected uninterruptedly since February 28, 2016 to March 11, 2016. Based on the analysis of data obtained in this period, was possible to observe the occurrence of events, backscattering for example,with significant increases in the neutron count rate during about 3 days of steady rain for all nearby regions. These events seem to be correlated with changes in local weather conditions such as cloud coverage or rain-precipitation of weak intensity. It was reported that the non-observation of a single event seems to be an indicative of the production of a burst of neutrons by a lightning discharge near the detector. Some explanations about the increasing of low energy neutrons are suggested in this article.

Distribution of Nutrients and Changes in Phytoplankton Composition in a Tropical Mesotidal Estuary, Northeastern Brazil

Abiotic parameters and phytoplankton were collected during 2010 and 2011 with the purpose of describing the phytoplankton distribution and the environmental characteristics. The diatoms were the most representative group in terms of species richness;in terms of density, the Cyanobacteria were more representative. Diversity and equitability were generally low in the estuary due to the dominance of Microcystis aeruginosa, an opportunistic and potentially toxic species of Cyanobacteria. The estuarine region is strongly impacted by high pollutant loads, especially nitrogen and phosphate compounds. Historical series of Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) showed negative trends associated with changes in the estuarine system. The main biological components changed through 1999-2011 period. The dominance of the species changed from the Bacillariophyta in previous studies to the Cyanobacteria in our study. The species Microcystis aeruginosa, through its high density, dominance and frequency of occurrence, was the key species in the area.

Fatigue Strength Evaluation of Resin-Injected Bolted Connections Using Statistical Analysis

Different strategies can be used to perform reparations and reinforcements of ancient bolted and riveted metallic bridges. As the riveting process is not currently a common practice, it requires proper equipment and skilled workers. Another solution is the use of welding. However, the weldability of old steels is poor. Bolts are very attractive alternative solutions, and are most commonly used to repair old metallic bridges. Fitted bolts are expensive solutions; the alternative is the use of resin-injected bolts. The behavior of bolted joints with preloaded resin-injected bolts has been studied using quasi-static and creep tests; however, few studies on the slip and fatigue behavior of these joints can be found in the literature. This paper presents an overview of a few experimental programs that were carried out by several authors aiming at evaluating the fatigue behavior of single and double shear resin-injected bolted connections. A comparison between the experimental data of joints with preloaded standard bolts and preloaded resin- injected bolts shows a fatigue strength reduction in the latter. Since Eurocode 3 （EC3） suggests the same fatigue strength curve for joints made of resin-injected bolts and standard bolts, this may raise some con- cerns. Furthermore, research on the feasibility of using both bonded and bolted connections is shown. This last study was performed with high-strength low-alloy structural steel plates and an acrylic struc- tural adhesive for metal bonding. For both case studies, a statistical analysis is performed on fatigue experimental data using linearized boundaries and the Castillo and Fernandez-Canteli model. Fatigue design curves are proposed and compared with the design suggestions of several European and North American standards,

Mechanisms and Associated Factors of Nocturia in Women Attending Two Urogynecology Clinics: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Nocturia has a multifactorial etiology, and its diagnostic approach involves, in addition to medical history and physical examination, the use of a bladder diary to define the pathophysiological mechanisms present in each case. Methods: This study investigated the prevalence of nocturia, its mechanisms, and associated factors in women with lower urinary tract symptoms attending two urogynecology clinics in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Anamnesis, physical examination, and a 24-hour bladder diary were conducted. Two definitions of nocturia were considered: one or more nighttime voids and two or more nighttime voids. Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests were used, with p-value ≤ 0.05 considered significant. Results: A total of 133 participants were included. The majority were aged 60 years or older (61.4%) and had three or more comorbidities (66.7%), with systemic arterial hypertension being the most prevalent (59.1%). Of the total participants, 54 (41.4%) completed the bladder diary. Among those with one or more nighttime voids (70.7%), the prevalence of nocturnal polyuria was 69.1%, reduced nocturnal bladder capacity was 17.3%, and global polyuria was 12.9%. Among participants with two or more nighttime voids (56.4%), the prevalences were respectively 68.2%, 19.1%, and 13.6%. Among the mechanisms, associations were found only with global polyuria, namely: use of insulin, body mass index and tobacco consumption. An association was also found between recurrent urinary tract infection and global polyuria in participants with two or more nighttime voids. Conclusions: The prevalence of nocturia was higher than that reported in general population studies and specialized services for lower urinary tract symptoms. Nocturnal polyuria was the most prevalent mechanism. Associations were observed between the use of insulin, body mass index, tobacco consumption, and recurrent urinary tract infection with global polyuria. No associations were found between any c

Pharmacological Evaluation of Hexane Fraction of Casearia gossypiosperma Briquet： Antivenom Potentiality

Neuromuscular junction is the main target for snakebites, which venoms act depending on the snake genus for paralyzing the prey （neurotoxicity） or for facilitating the digestion processes of the victim （myotoxicity）, and also as a defense mechanism against predators. In the present study, a mouse neuromuscular apparatus was used for testing the hexane fraction of Casearia gossypiosperma plant, that showed the better antiophidian ability than dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions, against the irreversible paralysis induced by two, Bothrops jararacussu （Bjssu, 40 μg/mL） and Crotalus durissus terrificus （Cdt, 10 μg/mL） snake venoms. All fractions were obtained by liquid-liquid partition from the C. gossypiosperma hydroalcoholic lyophilized extract. The preliminary chromatographic profile of this plant showed phenols and flavonols as active constituents, whereas hexane fraction expressed mainly 13-sitosterol and quercetin. In spite of hexane fraction protection （≌95% and 48% against Bjssu and Cdt, respectively）, isolately, only quercetin protected against the blockade-induced by Bjssu venom （65.5%）. This study showed that hexane fraction acts against these snake venoms by a synergistic phytocomplex mechanism.

Kaphta:Text mining web tool to extract information on the anticancer activity of polyphenols

In this paper,we describe the application of Kaphta architecture,a resource for text mining of the anticancer activity of *** anticancer activity of these compounds against different types of cancer has been widely reported in the literature and they are one of the most promising molecules for the development of anticancer *** architecture,which comprises four sequential and well-defined steps,uses a hybrid approach composed of a dictionary,rules and machine learning to identify abstracts containing sentences with associations between polyphenol,cancer and gene *** application of the architecture on 23826 PubMed abstracts generated a knowledge base of indexed abstracts with 172169 sentences containing,polyphenol-cancer and polyphenol-gene associations.A Web tool was implemented that allowed the user to search for information on 2006 polyphenols,240 cancers and 3121 genes entities,and 11750 polyphenol-cancer and 9160 polyphenol-gene associations indexed in the knowledge base.A ranking algorithm calculates scores for each indexed abstract considering the number and type of sentences with entities and rules recognized.A test with users demonstrated that the visualization resources on the web tool contributes to the understanding of the association between polyphenols,genes and cancers,in comparison with the PubMed *** Kaphta architecture and web tool permits to extract knowledge on the anticancer activity of polyphenols and can thus contribute to the exploration of these molecules in the development of anticancer therapies.

Hepatic encephalopathy(HE)is a cognitive disturbance characterized by neuropsychiatric *** occurs in acute and chronic hepatic disease and also in patients with portosystemic *** presence of these portosystemic shunts allows the passage of nitrogenous substances from the intestines through systemic veins without liver ***,the embolization of these shunts has been performed tocontrol HE manifestations,but the presence of portal vein thrombosis is considered a *** this presentation we show a cirrhotic patient with severe HE and portal vein thrombosis who was submitted to embolization of a large portosystemic *** report:a 57 years-old cirrhotic patient who had been hospitalized many times for persistent HE and hepatic coma,even without precipitant *** had a wide portosystemic shunt and also portal vein *** abdominal angiography confirmed the splenorenal shunt and showed other *** larger shunt was embolized through placement of microcoils,and the patient had no recurrence of overt *** was a little increase of esophageal and gastric varices,but no endoscopic treatment was *** portosystemic shunts are frequent causes of recurrent HE in cirrhotic patients,portal vein thrombosis should be considered a relative contraindication to perform a shunt ***,in particular cases with many shunts and severe HE,we found that one of these shunts can be safely embolized and this procedure can be sufficient to obtain a good HE *** conclusion,we reported a case of persistent HE due to a wide portosystemic shunt associated with portal vein *** the patient had other shunts,she was successfully treated by embolization of the larger shunt.

Application of NURBS for Obtaining Free Form Curves and Surfaces in Spur and Helical Gears by Using CMM （Coordinate Measurement Machine）

Currently, engineering processes require reduced manufacturing time and low cost, in addition to the growing demand for workpieces with high accuracy. Workpieces with complex geometries and free forms has been a common practice in industries from different sectors such as： automotive, aeronautics, bioengineering among others. One way to satisfy the market requirements satisfactorily is making measurements more efficient to make the production process faster, in other words, it is necessary to make the inspection system more accurate and flexible. The coordinate measuring evolved over the past three decades and today it is the technology that best meets the requirements of modem manufacturing through CMMs （coordinate measurement machines）. The CMMs are important tool for design, fabrication and inspection of manufactured products, also used in the application of reverse engineering. These machines are also used by engineers in order to produce an accurate digital model in a virtual space for later use in CAD （computer-aided design）/CAM （computer-aided manufacturing）. It is worth mentioning that the accuracy of the modeling process of given piece depends on the number of control points that are captured on the workpiece surface. Consequently, the laser inspection systems are the best tools for use in reverse engineering, but more expensive when compared to contact measurement systems that use the TTP （touch trigger probe）, also used by CMMs. In this case, this paper aims to present an approach based on NURBS （non-uniform rational B-splines） to obtain free form curves and surfaces from a group of points obtained by using a contact sensor, the touch trigger probe. NURBS is an important mathematical tool and consists of generalizations of Bezier curves and surfaces and B-splines. Lutzomyia longipalpis Breeding—A Probable Breeding Substrate for Lutzomyia longipalpis in Nature

The identifying of the preferred breeding sites of sand fly immature forms is quite important to the understanding of the vector’s biology and the development of more effective control strategies for leishmaniasis. In the present study, it was analyzed experimentally;the potential of dog feces of serving as breeding substrate to Lutzomyia longipalpis. Two situations were tested: 1) the life cycle of the insects from larvae to adults, 2) the whole cycle from adults to adults. Our results demonstrated for the first time that: 1) L. longipalpis can be easily bred in dog feces, suggesting that it could represent a potential raising substrate to immature forms for this species;2) L. longipalpis larvae are able to make galleries on a substrate, literally burying themselves in this to function also as a shelter;3) from the previous information that dogs infected with Ancylostoma caninum can present dodecanoic acid in their feces, we suggested that this substrate may be particularly more attractive to L. longipalpis females seen that this molecule is the same component of their oviposition pheromone, which is produced by the accessory glands and secreted onto the eggs;4) after the copulation the males may landing on the substrate and continued beating the wings intermittently until the death in a similar behavior also noticed in other situations associated to kairomones response or pheromone production. Therefore, we suggested that it is very likely that dog excrements could serve as an important breeding substrate for L. longipalpis in endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis in the New World.
