Design and Implementation of an Extended Collectives Library for Unified Parallel C

Unified Parallel C （UPC） is a parallel extension of ANSI C based on the Partitioned Global Address Space （PGAS） programming model, which provides a shared memory view that simplifies code development while it can take advantage of the scalability of distributed memory architectures. Therefore, UPC allows programmers to write parallel applications on hybrid shared/distributed memory architectures, such as multi-core clusters, in a more productive way, accessing remote memory by means of different high-level language constructs, such as assignments to shared variables or collective primitives. However, the standard UPC collectives library includes a reduced set of eight basic primitives with quite limited functionality. This work presents the design and implementation of extended UPC collective functions that overcome the limitations of the standard collectives library, allowing, for example, the use of a specific source and destination thread or defining the amount of data transferred by each particular thread. This library fulfills the demands made by the UPC developers community and implements portable algorithms, independent of the specific UPC compiler/runtime being used. The use of a representative set of these extended collectives has been evaluated using two applications and four kernels as case studies. The results obtained confirm the suitability of the new library to provide easier programming without trading off performance, thus achieving high productivity in parallel programming to harness the performance of hybrid shared/distributed memory architectures in high performance computing.

Drones are increasingly used for fauna monitoring and wildlife tracking;however,their application for wildlife tracking is restricted by developing such systems.Here we explore the potential of drones for wildlife tracking using an off-the-shelf system that is easy to use by non-specialists consisting of a multirotor drone,smartphones,and commercial tracking devices via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band(UWB).We present the system configuration,explore the operational parameters that can affect detection capabilities,and test the effectiveness of the system for locating targets by simulating target animals in savanna and forest environments.The self-contained tracking system was built without hardware or software customization.In 40 tracking flights carried out in the Brazilian Cerrado,we obtained a detection rate of 90%in savanna and 40%in forest areas.Tests for targets in movement(N=20),the detection rates were 90%in the savanna and 30%in the forest areas.The spatial accuracy obtained by the system was 14.61 m,being significantly more accurate in savanna(x=10.53)than in forest areas(x=13.06).This approach to wildlife tracking facilitates the use of drones by non-specialists at an affordable cost for conservation projects with limited resources.The reduced size of the tags,the long battery life,and the iower cost compared to GPS-tags open up a range of opportunities for animal tracking.

There is a growing body of research indicating that drones can disturb animals.However,it is usu-ally unclear whether the disturbance is due to visual or auditory cues.Here,we examined the effect of drone flights on the behavior of great dusky swifts Cypseloides senex and white collared swifts Streptoprocne zonaris in 2 breeding sites where drone noise was obscured by environmental noise from waterfalls and any disturbance must be largely visual.We performed 12 experimental flights with a multirotor drone at different vertical,horizontal,and diagonal distances from the colonies.From all flights,17%caused50 m the disturbance percentage does not exceed 20%,at60%.We recommend that flights with a multirotor drone during the breeding period should be con-ducted at a distance of>50 m and that recreational flights should be discouraged or conducted at larger distances(e.g.100 m)in nesting birds areas such as waterfalls,canyons,and caves.

Preparation of monospecific anti-PAG antibodies for cattle pregnancy detection: use of synthetic peptides to improve specificity

Immunological methods involving pregnancy associ-ated glycoproteins (PAG) are used for cattle preg-nancy detection. The faults of these methods could be overcomed by using antibodies specific for each member of the PAG family. In order to differentiate between very similar proteins, preparation of anti-bodies specific for peptides is a method of choice. In this work, we summarize a series of considerations regarding peptide design and choose free access NCBI, Antigenicity Plot, EMBOSS Antigenic and Expasy tools to apply them. We design peptides spe-cific for different reported PAG members and obtain the corresponding polyclonal antibodies for five of them.

BACKGROUND^177Lu peptide receptor radionuclide therapy(PRRT)is a recently approved therapy in Spain that has been demonstrated to be a well-tolerated therapy for positive somatostatin receptor advanced gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.AIM To determine the impact of PRRT on quality of life,radiologic and metabolic response,overall survival,prognostic factors and toxicity.METHODS Thirty-six patients treated with^177Lu-PRRT from 2016 to 2019 were included.The most frequent location of the primary tumor was the gastrointestinal tract(52.8%),pancreas(27.8%),and nongastropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor(11.1%).The liver was the most common site of metastasis(91.7%),followed by distant nodes(50.0%),bone(27.8%),peritoneum(25.0%)and lung(11.1%).Toxicity was evaluated after the administration of each dose.Treatment efficacywas evaluated by two parameters:stable disease and disease progression in response evaluation criteria in solid tumors 1.1 criterion and prognostic factors were tested.RESULTS From 36 patients,55.6%were men,with a median age of 61.1±11.8 years.Regarding previous treatments,55.6%of patients underwent surgery of the primary tumor,100%of patients were treated with long-acting somatostatin analogues,66.7%of patients were treated with everolimus,27.8%of patients were treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitor,and 27.8%of patients were treated with interferon.One patient received radioembolization,three patients received chemoembolization,six patients received chemotherapy.Hematological toxicity was registered in 14 patients(G1-G2:55.5%and G3:3.1%).Other events presented were intestinal suboclusion in 4 cases,cholestasis in 2 cases and carcinoid crisis in 1 case.The median follow-up time was 3 years.Currently,24 patients completed treatment.Nineteen are alive with stable disease,two have disease progression,eight have died,and nine are still receiving treatment.The median overall survival was 12.5 mo(95%confidence interval range:9.8–15.2),being inversely proportional to toxicity in previous treatments(P
