Ketamine anesthesia reduces intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats

AIm: To investigate the effects of ketamine anesthesia on the motility alterations and tissue injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion in rats. mETHoDS: Thirty male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Ischemia was induced by ob-structing blood flow in 25% of the total small intesti-nal length (ileum) with a vascular clamp for 45 min, after which either 60 min or 24 h of reperfusion was allowed. Rats were either anesthetized with pento-barbital sodium (50 mg/kg) or ketamine (100 mg/kg). Control groups received sham surgery. After 60 min of reperfusion, the intestine was examined for mor-phological alterations, and after 24 h intestinal basic electrical rhythm (BER) frequency was calculated, and intestinal transit determined in all groups. RESULTS: The intestinal mucosa in rats that were anesthetized with ketamine showed moderate altera-tions such as epithelial lifting, while ulceration and hemorrhage was observed in rats that received pento-barbital sodium after 60 min of reperfusion. Quantita-tive analysis of structural damage using the Chiu scaleshowed significantly less injury in rats that received ketamine than in rats that did not (2.35 ± 1.14 vs 4.58 ± 0.50, P nce traveled by a mark-er, expressed as percentage of total intestinal length, in rats that received pentobarbital sodium was 20% ± 2% in comparison with 25.9% ± 1.64% in rats that re-ceived ketamine (P = 0.017). BER was not statistically different between groups. ConCLUSIon: our results show that ketamine anesthesia is associated with diminished intestinal injury and abolishes the intestinal transit delay induced by ischemia/reperfusion.

This study quantifies seismic amplifications in near-shore arising from seaquakes. Within the Boundary Element method, boundary elements are used to irradiate waves and force densities obtained for each element. Huygens′ Principle is implemented since the diffracted waves are constructed at the boundary from which they are radiated, which is equivalent to Somigliana′s theorem. Application of boundary conditions leads to a system of integral equations of the Fredholm type of second kind and zero order. Several numerical configurations are analyzed： The first is used to verify the present formulation with ideal sea floor configurations to estimate seismic amplifications. With the formulation verified, simple slope configurations are studied to estimate spectra of seismic motions. It is found that P-waves can produce seismic amplifications from 1.2 to 3.9 times the amplitude of the incident wave. SV-waves can generate seismic amplifications up to 4.5 times the incident wave. Another relevant finding is that the highest amplifications are at the shore compared to the ones at the sea floor.

Security-constrained model for integrated power and natural-gas system

one of the main factors impacting the reliability of energy systems nowadays is the growing interdependence between electricity and gas networks due to the increase in the installation of gas-fired units. Securityconstrained unit commitment(SCUC) models are used to economically schedule generating units without compromising the system reliability. This paper proposes a novel SCUC formulation that includes dynamic gas constraints,such as the line pack, and transmission contingencies in power and gas networks for studying the integrated system reliability. A Benders’ decomposition with linear programming techniques is developed to be able to study large systems. By including dynamic gas constraints into the SCUC, the proposed model accounts for the flexibility and reliability that power systems require from gas systems in the short term. Case studies of different size and complexity are employed to illustrate how the reliability of one system is affected by the reliability of the other. These experiments show how both systems operate in a secure way(by including contingencies) increases operating costs by approximately 9% and also show how these costs can vary by 24% depending on the line pack scheduling.

Implementation of a new Solution for the Preservation of Anatomical Specimens made of non-Toxic Substances

The preservation of anatomical pieces in Veterinary Anatomy is essential since it is not possible to dissect all domestic species. most techniques use reagents with high levels of toxicity such as formaldehyde. The objective of this work was to develop a new preservation technique that uses reagents with zero toxicity and that allows obtaining preserved pieces suitable for anatomical studies. The alcohol propylene glycol technique was developed, the method of which uses a fixation step with alcohol, sodium chloride, commercial vinegar and subsequently the impregnation of the preservation solution made from propylene glycol and commercial vinegar, which are non-toxic. As a result of this work, adequately preserved sheep hearts were obtained that preserved their morphology with slight changes in size and weight, which did not affect their external and internal anatomical structure. Its coloration was not substantially affected, remaining a little lighter. The pieces obtained showed flexibility which allowed dissections to be carried out. The time to develop the technique was 20 days. A comparative study was carried out with the phenolated glycerin technique that uses toxic reagents (formaldehyde and phenol) and the pieces obtained with the alcohol propylene glycol technique were of better quality, observing that the pieces with phenolated glycerin tend to darken and are more rigid. And the time to develop the technique is 24 days. In conclusion, a preservation technique for anatomical pieces was developed that allowed the preservation of the organs under study, which allow their use for anatomical studies, and which have been preserved without changes until the time of this publication (8 months) and there are pieces preserved with this technique for 2 years.

Background: The protective role of (poly)phenols against metabolic disorders has been extensively studied in adults but not in ***: To assess associations of dietary (poly)phenols and their subclasses with cardiometabolic health parameters in adolescents. methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 944 individuals aged 11 to 14 years enrolled in the SI! Program for Secondary Schools trial (nCT03504059). (Poly)phenol intake was assessed using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires and the Phenol-Explorer database. The measured cardiometabolic parameters were waist circumference (WC) age-sex z-score， blood pressure (BP) age-sex z-score， blood glucose (BG)， triglycerides (TG)， and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). multilevel mixed-effect linear regression models were applied to examine the association between (poly)phenol quintiles and cardiometabolic health ***: Compared to the lowest quintile， adolescents in the highest quintile of total (poly)phenol intake had lower WC z-scores (β=-0.09， 95%CI=-0.09;-0.08， P-for trend=0.002)， mean arterial pressure z-scores (β =-0.11， 95%CI=-0.12;-0.09， P-for trend=0.206)， and HDL-c (β=-1.52， 95%CI=-2.90;-0.14， P-for trend=0.108)， after multivariable adjustment. The WC z-scores (β=-0.11， 95%CI=-0.19;-0.03， P-for trend=0.013) and HDL-c (β=-2.16， 95%CI=-3.78;-0.53， P-for trend=0.046) were lower in the highest quintile of flavonoid intake compared to the lowest quintile. The metabolic syndrome(mS), which includes obesity,dyslipidaemia, hypertension and hyperglycaemia according to the most widely accepted definitions now used, is one of the most common post-transplant complications, with a prevalence of 44%-58%. The mS, together with the immunosuppression, is considered the main risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease(CVD) in transplant recipients, which in turn accounts for 19%-42% of all deaths unrelated to the graft. The presence of mS represents a relative risk for the development of CVD and death of 1.78. on the other hand, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD), considered as the manifestation of the mS in the liver, is now the second leading reason for liver transplantation in the United States after hepatitis C and alcohol. nAFLD has a high rate of recurrence in the liver graft and a direct relation with the worsening of other metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance or diabetes mellitus. Consequently, it is vitally important to identify and treat as soon as possible such modifiable factors as hypertension, overweight, hyperlipidaemia or diabetes in transplanted patients to thus minimise the impact on patient survival. Additionally, steroid-free regimens are favoured, with minimal immunosuppression to limit the possible effects on the development of the mS.

Background:There are few data regarding endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)usefulness in children and *** reviewed the long-term experience with diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP in a tertiary single center in Southern ***:A retrospective chart review of patients aged 0-18 years who had undergone ERCPs from January 2000 to June 2012 was *** on demographics,indications,diagnosis,treatments,and complications were ***:Seventy-five ERCPs were performed in 60 *** median age of the patients at the procedure was 13.9 years(range:1.2-17.9).of the 60 patients,47(78.3%)were *** all ERCPs,48(64.0%)were performed in patients above 10 years and 35(72.9%)of them were in *** was indicated for patients with bile duct obstruction(49.3%),sclerosing cholangitis(18.7%),post-surgery complication(12%),biliary stent(10.7%),choledochal cyst(5.3%),and pancreatitis(4%).The complication rate of ERCP was 9.7%involving mild bleeding,pancreatitis and *** who had therapeutic procedures were older(13.7±3.9 vs.9.9±4.9 years;P=0.001)and had more extrahepatic biliary abnormalities(82%vs.50%;P=0.015)than those who had diagnostic ERCPs.A marked change in the indications of ERCPs was found,i.e.,from 2001 to 2004,indications were more diagnostic and from 2005 therapeutic procedures were ***:Diagnostic ERCPs are being replaced by magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and also by endoscopic *** these procedures are complementary and ERCP still has a role for therapeutic purposes.
