Power uprates pose a threat to electrical generators due to possible parasite effects that can develop potential failure sources with catastrophic consequences in most cases. In that sense, it is important to pay close attention to overheating, which results from excessive system losses and cooling system inefficiency. The end region of a stator is the most sensitive part to overheating. The calculation of magnetic fields, the evaluation of eddy-current losses and the determination of loss-derived temperature increases, are challenging problems requiring the use of simulation methods. The most usual methodology is the finite element method, or linear regression. In order to address this methodology, a calculation method was developed to determine temperature increases in the last stator package. The mathematical model developed was based on an artificial intelligence technique, more specifically neural networks. The model was successfully applied to estimate temperatures associated to 108% power and used to extrapolate temperature values for a power uprate to 113.48%. This last scenario was also useful to test extrapolation accuracy. The method is applied to determine core-end temperature when power is uprated to 117.78%. At that point, the temperature value will be compared to with the values obtained using finite elements method and multivariate regression.

On hillslopes and agricultural fields, discrete areas of intense, localized soil erosion commonly take place in the form of migrating headcuts. These erosional features significantly increase soil loss and landscape degradation, yet the unsteady, transient, and migratory habits of headcuts complicate their phenomenological and erosional characterization. Here a unique experimental facility was constructed to examine actively migrating headcuts typical of upland concentrated flows. Essential components of the facility include a deep soil cavity with external drainage, rainfall simulator, capacity for overland flow, and a video recording technique for data collection. Results from these experiments show that: (1) after a short period of adj.stment, headcut migration attained a steady-state condition, where the rate of migration, scour hole geometry, and sediment discharge remain constant with time; (2) boundary conditions of higher rates of overland flow, steeper bed slopes, and larger initial headcut heights produced systematically larger scour holes with higher rates of soil erosion; and (3) during migration, the turbulent flow structure within the scour hole remained unchanged, consisting of an overfall nappe at the brink transitioning into a reattached wall j.t with two recirculation eddies within the plunge pool. The systematic behavior of headcut development and migration enabled the application of modified j.t impingement theory to predict with good success the characteristics of the impinging j.t, the depth of maximum scour, the rate of headcut migration, and the rate of sediment erosion. These laboratory data and the analytical formulation can be used in conj.nction with soil erosion prediction technology to improve the management of agricultural areas impacted by headcut development and ephemeral gully erosion.

The industry is continuously searching for new methods to reduce the use of chemical preservatives while still produce safer foods for the consumer. Goat whey is a waste from the cheese industry which is primarily treated as a residue. It is rich in different nutrients and has the potential to be used as a matrix for lactic acid bacteria fermentation. This work aims to find a revalorization of whey for the production of a natural origin antifungal agent by a fermentation that can be used as food ingredient. First different whey culture mediums were developed and fermented. Quantification of different antifungal molecules in whey culture mediums in com-paration to a fermentation of De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) culture medium evidenced that the production of this antifungal metabolites was similar. The in vitro qualitative and quantitative assays evidenced that the whey-based mediums increased the antifungal activity of the CFS in comparation to the MRS. The fermented whey produced bigger inhibition halos (above 1 cm) in the agar diffusion test in comparation to the fermented MRS (bellow 0.6 cm). Alike, in the minimal fungicidal concentration test the lowest antifungal concentrations were detected on the fermented whey mediums, averaging antifungal concentrations lower than 130 g/L. Finally, a multivariable data analysis determined that more antifungal metabolites yet to be detected were affecting in the antifungal activity from the whey samples. The fermented whey has the potential to be a tool in reducing the use of chemical preservatives in foods.

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) suggests the use of machine learning algorithms with the aim of understanding specific behaviors in a structural system. This work introduces a pattern recognition methodology for operational condition clustering in a structure sample using the well known Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with noise(DBSCAn) *** methodology was validated using a data set from an experiment with 32 Fiber Bragg Gratings bonded to an aluminum beam placed in cantilever and submitted to cyclic bending loads under 13 different operational conditions(pitch angles). Further, the computational cost and precision of the machine learning pipeline called FA + GA-DBSCAn(which employs a combination of machine learning techniques including factor analysis for dimensionality reduction and a genetic algorithm for the automatic selection of initial parameters of DBSCAn) was measured. The obtained results have shown a good performance, detecting 12 of 13 operational conditions, with an overall precision over 90%.

Purpose: This study aims to compare adolescents' cardiometabolic risk score through an integrative classification of physical activity(PA),which involves the combination of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) and sedentary behavior(SB).Methods: A cross-sectional study derived from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by nutrition in Adolescence Cross-Sectional Study database(2006-2008) was conducted in adolescents(n = 548; boys, 47.3%; 14.7 ± 1.2 years) from 10 European cities. MVPA and SB were obj.ctively measured using accelerometry. Adolescents were divided into 4 categories according to MVPA(meeting or not meeting the international recommendations) and the median of SB time(above or below sex-and age-specific median) as follows: High-SB & Inactive, Low-SB & Inactive,High-SB & Active, and Low-SB & Active. A clustered cardiometabolic risk score was computed using the homeostatic model assessment, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, sum 4 skinfolds, and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF).Analyses of covariance were performed to discern differences on cardiometabolic risk scores among PA categories and each health ***: The cardiometabolic risk score was lower in adolescents meeting the MVPA recommendation and with less time spent in SB in comparison to the high-SB & Inactive group(p no difference in cardiometabolic risk score was established between High-SB or Low-SB groups in inactive adolescents. It is important to note that CRF was the only variable that showed a significant modification(higher)when children were compared from the category of physically inactive with "active" but not from high-to ***: Being physically active is the most significant and protective outcome in adolescents to reduce cardiometabolic risk. Lower SB does not exhibit a significant and extra beneficial difference.

nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD) is a complex disorder that has evolved in recent years as the leading global cause of chronic liver damage. The main obstacle to better disease management pertains to the lack of approved pharmacological interventions for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(nASH) and nASH-fibrosis-the severe histological forms. Over the past decade,tremendous advances have been made in nAFLD research, resulting in the discovery of disease mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets. Hence, a large number of pharmacological agents are currently being tested for safety and efficacy. These drugs are in the initial pharmacological phases(phase 1 and 2),which involve testing tolerability, therapeutic action, and pharmacological *** is thus reasonable to assume that the next generation of nASH drugs will not be available for clinical use for foreseeable future. The expected delay can be mitigated by drug repurposing or repositioning, which essentially relies on identifying and developing new uses for existing drugs. Here, we propose a drug candidate selection method based on the integration of molecular pathways of disease pathogenesis into network analysis tools that use OMICs data as well as multiples sources, including text mining from the medical literature.

This review intends to uncover how information from large-scale genetic profiling(whole genome sequencing, and whole exome sequencing) of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD), as well as information from circulating transcriptomics(cell-free mi RnAs) and metabolomics, contributes to the understanding of nAFLD pathogenesis. A further aim is to address the question of whether OMICs information is ready to be implemented in the clinics. The available evidence suggests that any new knowledge pertaining to molecular signatures associated with nAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis should be promptly translated into the clinical setting. nevertheless, rigorous steps that must include validation and replication are mandatory before utilizing OMICs biomarkers in diagnostics to identify patients at risk of advanced disease, including liver cancer.
