Exploring lanthanide doped materials and their high-pressure optical properties is important from the perspective of designing pressure sensors, piezoelectric materials, scintillators, and optoelectronic devices, just to mention a few. Understanding the high-pressure optical properties of polymeric fibrous mats provides significant advantages in terms of flexibility, tunability, facile processability, and malleability. In this work, we have developed flexible polyvinylidene difluoride(PVDF) fibrous mats doped with an Eu^(3+) source of Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O(EN-PF) or Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)(ES-PF) by a Forcespinning■ method. Microstructural analysis of these two systems indicates that Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O and Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3) are homogeneously distributed and dispersed into the PVDF matrix. Fiber formation promotes a β-phase PVDF. Eu^(3+) doping increases the β-phase. Its fraction is larger for the ES-PF mats. To understand their high-pressure optical properties, their photoluminescence spectra have been taken at various pressures up to 58 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. High-pressure luminescence illustrates a clear change in asymmetry ratio, peak intensity, peak breadth, color coordinate, and color temperature of Eu^(3+) ions from both EN-PF and ES-PF with a different extent of changes. Specifically, Eu^(3+) ions in the ES-PF mats switch from asymmetric to symmetric environment as pressure increases. Those in the EN-PF mats present symmetric environment for all tested pressures. Both of the Eu^(3+) doped PVDF systems present irreversible changes. Therefore,the EN-PF fibrous mats present an opportunity to make pressure induced red-orange-yellow tunable phosphors for multifunctional applications.

BACKGROUND The estimation of left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF)by 2D echocardiography(2D-ECHO)is the most used tool to assess LV systolic function(LVSF).Global longitudinal strain(GLS)has recently been suggested as a superior method for several evaluations.This study explored the association and prevalence of LV systolic dysfunction(LVSD)by using these methods in patients with end-stage renal disease(ESRD)and severe hyperparathyroidism(SHPTH);both associated with cardiovascular events(CEs).AIM To evaluate the myocardial function in patients with ESRD and SHPTH by using the GLS and LVEF measured through conventional 2D-ECHO.METHODS In 62 patients with ESRD and SHPTH,asymptomatic,and without a history of CEs,LVSF was evaluated by 2D-ECHO,obtaining the EF,by the Simpson biplane method,and GLS by speckle tracking.RESULTS The total patients with ESRD had a preserved LVEF(>50%)but abnormal GLS(<13.55%).Additionally,multivariate analysis showed an independent association of GLS and serum parathyroid hormone(PTH),LV mass index,and hemoglobin.Also,PTH was independently associated with lateral e'wave and tricuspid regurgitation velocity.CONCLUSION In patients with SHPTH linked to ESRD,the use of GLS by 2D-ECHO is a more sensitive tool than LVEF for detecting LVSD.

Laser sintering of Cu nanoparticles on PET polymer substrate for printed electronics at different wavelengths and process conditions

This study explores the feasibility of different laser systems to sinter screen-printed lines from nonconductive copper nanoparticles(Cu NPs)on polyethylene terephthalate polymer film.These materials are commonly used in manufacturing functional printed electronics for large-area applications.Here,optical and thermal characterization of the materials is conducted to identify suitable laser sources and process conditions.Direct diode(808 nm),Nd:YAG(1064 nm and second harmonic of 532 nm),and ytterbium fiber(1070 nm)lasers are explored.Optimal parameters for sintering the Cu NPs are identified for each laser system,which targets low resistivity and high processing speed.Finally,the quality of the sintered tracks is quantified,and the laser sintering mechanisms observed under different wavelengths are analyzed.Practical considerations are discussed to improve the laser sintering process of Cu NPs.

The development of polymeric optical materials with a higher refractive index,transparency in the visible spectrum region and easier processability is increasingly desirable for advanced optical applications such as microlenses,image sensors,and organic light-emitting diodes.Most acrylates have a low refractive index(around 1.50)which does not meet the high perfo rmance requirements of advanced optical materials.In this research,three novel acrylates were synthesized via a facile one-step approach and used to fabricate optical transparent polymers.All of the polymers reveal good optical properties including high transparency(≥90%)in the visible spectrum region and high refractive index values(1.6363)at 550 nm.Moreover,nanostructures of these acrylate polymers with various feature sizes including nanogratings and photonic crystals were successfully fabricated using nanoimprint lithography.These results indicate that these acrylates can be used in a wide range of optical and optoelectronic devices where nanopatterned films with high refractive index and transparency are required.

Contrasted Impact of Land Abandonment on Soil Erosion in Mediterranean Agriculture Fields

Abandonment of agricultural land results in on-and off-site consequences for the ecosystem. In this study, 105 rainfall simulations were carried out in agriculture lands of the Mediterranean belt in Spain(vineyards in Málaga, almond orchards in Murcia, and orange and olive orchards in Valencia) and in paired abandoned lands to assess the impact of land abandonment on soil and water losses. After abandonment, soil detachment decreased drastically in the olive and orange orchards, while vineyards did not show any difference and almond orchards registered higher erosion rates after the abandonment. Terraced orchards of oranges and olives recovered a dense vegetation cover after the abandonment, while the sloping terrain of almond orchards and vineyards enhanced the development of crusts and rills and a negligible vegetation cover resulted in high erosion rates. The contrasted responses to land abandonment in Mediterranean agricultural lands suggest that land abandonment should be programmed and managed with soil erosion control strategies for some years to avoid land degradation.

One of the main constraints for reducing the temporal duration of attosecond pulses is the attochirp inherent to the process of high-order harmonic generation(HHG).Though the attochirp can be compensated in the extreme-ultraviolet using dispersive materials,this is unfeasible toward x-rays,where the shortest attosecond or even sub-attosecond pulses could be obtained.We theoretically demonstrate that HHG driven by a circularly polarized infrared pulse while assisted by an strong oscillating ultrafast intense magnetic field enables the generation of few-cycle Fourier-limited few attosecond pulses.In such a novel scenario,the magnetic field transversally confines the ionized electron during the HHG process,analogously to a nanowire trapping.Once the electron is ionized,the transverse electron dynamics is excited by the magnetic field,acting as a high-energy reservoir to be released in the form of phase-locked spectrally wide high-frequency harmonic radiation during the electron recollision with the parent ion.In addition,the transverse breathing dynamics of the electron wavepacket,introduced by the magnetic trapping,strongly modulates the recollision efficiency of the electronic trajectories,thus the attosecond pulse emissions.The aftermath is the possibility of producing high-frequency(hundreds of eV)attosecond isolated few-cycle pulses,almost Fourier limited.The isolated intense magnetic fields considered in our simulations,of tens of kT,can be produced in finite spatial volumes considering structured beams or stationary configurations of counter-propagating state-of-the-art multi-terawatt/petawatt lasers.

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their impacts.In January 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected Spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central Spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a fortnight.Using bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood Pigeon(Columba palumbus),Eurasian Magpie(Pica pica)and Red-legged Partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by Filomena.Results suggest that in response to Filomena,Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home ranges.Our results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

In a recent paper published in Science,Ng et al.provide seminal insights into the process through which neutrophils are reprogrammed by the tumor environment,leading to a convergent transition from different neutrophil states towards a unique end-stage differentiated pro-tumor phenotype.1 These findings have major translational implications as they provide potential neutrophil-related targets for tumor immunotherapy.

In this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023;14:784-790.It is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant(LT)may need to have a total hip arthroplasty(THA)or total knee arthroplasty(TKA)implanted.Ahmed et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general population.However,there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA than in the general population(individuals without LT).Therefore,in this Editorial I would like to point out that there is controversy in the literature regarding whether LT patients undergoing THA/TKA have higher mortality than the general population.Therefore,future research should attempt to resolve this controversy.
