Structural and functional differences in the brains of patients with MCI with and without depressive symptoms and their relations with Alzheimer's disease:an MRI study

Background:The mild cognitive impairment(MCI)stage among elderly individuals is very complex,and the level of diagnostic accu-racy is far from *** studies have tried to improve the’MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease(AD)’classification by further stratifying these patients into ***-related symptoms may play an important role in helping to better define the MCI stage in elderly ***:In this work,we explored functional and structural differences in the brains of patients with nondepressed MCI(nDMCI)and patients with MCI with depressive symptoms(DMCI),and we examined how these groups relate to AD atrophy patterns and cognitive ***:Sixty-five participants underwent MRI exams and were divided into four groups:cognitively normal,nDMCI,DMCI,and *** compared the regional brain volumes,cortical thickness,and white matter microstructure measures using diffusion tensor imaging among ***,we evaluated changes in functional connectivity using fMRI ***:In comparison to the nDMCI group,the DMCI patients had more pronounced atrophy in the hippocampus and ***,DMCI patients had asymmetric damage in the limbic-frontal white matter ***,two medial pos-terior regions,the isthmus of cingulate gyrus and especially the lingual gyrus,had high importance in the structural and functional differentiation between the two ***:It is possible to differentiate nDMCI from DMCI patients using MRI techniques,which may contribute to a better charac-terization of subtypes of the MCI stage.

Comparison between Different ESI Methods on Refractory Epilepsy Patients Shows a High Sensitivity for Bayesian Model Averaging

Electrical Source Imaging (ESI) is a non-invasive technique of reconstructing brain activities using EEg data. This technique has been applied to evaluate epilepsy patients being evaluated for epilepsy surgery, showing encouraging results for mapping interictal epileptiform discharges (IED). However, ESI is underused in planning epilepsy surgery. This is basically due to the wide availability of methods for solving the electromagnetism inverse problem (e-IP) associated to few studies using EEg setups similar to those most commonly used in clinical setting. In this study, we applied six different methods of solving the e-IP based on IEDs of 20 focal epilepsy patients that presented abnormalities in their MRI. We compared the ESI maps obtained by each method with the location of the abnormality, calculating the Euclidian distances from the center of the lesion to the closest border of the method solution (CL-BM) and also to the solution’s maxima (CL-MM). We also applied a score system in order to allow us to evaluate the sensitivity of each method for temporal and extra temporal patients. In our patients, the Bayesian Model Averaging method had a sensitivity of 86% and the shortest CL-MM. This method also had more restricted solutions that were more representative of epileptogenic activities than those obtained by the other methods.

Water Quality Assessment of a Trout Farming Effluent,Bocaina,Brazil

The concern in mitigating the negative impact generated by the discharge of nutrients in the receiving water body is a challenge for the sustainable development of Brazilian fish farms. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the water quality and environmental impact caused by trout farming system effluent with focus on discharge of phosphorus. Sampling was performed on a weekly basis in triplicate from September to November 2010. Sample sites were distributed according to the water flow: upstream from trout farming system, water supply, effluent, artificial wetland, mixing zone and downstream (60 m from effluent). In the field, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, water temperature and turbidity were measured. In laboratory, nitrogen and phosphorus series, chlorophyll a, total solids suspended and their organic and inorganic fractions were analyzed. For the good growth of trout in production system, the abiotic factors described in the water quality monitoring demonstrated acceptable values. Environmentally, after passing through the production system and artificial wetland, there was an increase in concentrations of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, orthophosphate, ammonium, chlorophyll a, total solids suspended and their organic and inorganic fractions (P g management and the inefficiency of the artificial wetland. Therefore, it is necessary to use best quality feed to meet the nutritional requirements of trout, maintaining an optimal feed conversion and reducing pollution generated by effluent.
