Mycophagists can influe.ce.fungal dive.sity within the.r home.range. by e.suring the.continue. and e.fe.tive.dispe.sal of spore. from one.site.to anothe.. Howe.e., the.passage.of spore. through the.dige.tive.tract of ve.te.rate. can affe.t the.activity and viability of the.spore. inge.te.. This phe.ome.on has be.n rare.y docume.te. in opportunistic mycophagists consuming e.ige.us fungi. Using laboratory e.pe.ime.ts, we.inve.tigate. the.activity and viability of spore. of two e.ige.us e.tomycorrhizal fungal spe.ie. (Laccaria trichode.mophoraandSuillus tome.tosus) afte. passage.through the.dige.tive.tract of two opportunistic mycophagous small rode.ts, the.volcano mouse.e.omyscus alstoniand the.de.r mouse.. maniculatus. We.found that passage.through the.gut of e.the. spe.ie. of rode.t had a significant e.fe.t on spore.activity and viability for both fungal spe.ie.. The.proportion of active.spore. (0.37–0.40) ofL. trichode.mophorain the.fe.e. of both spe.ie. of rode.ts was le.s than that re.orde. for the.control (0.82). Howe.e., the.proportion of active.spore. (0.64–0.73) ofS. tome.tosusin the.fe.e. of e.ch spe.ie. of rode.t was highe. than in the.control (0.40). On the.othe. hand, the.viability of spore. was lowe. (0.26–0.30 inL. trichode.mophoraand 0.60–0.69 inS. tome.tosus) for both fungi whe. consume. by e.the. rode.t re.ative.to the.controls (0.90 inL. trichode.mophoraand 0.82 inS. tome.tosus). The.e.findings sugge.t that the.e.rode.t spe.ie. may be.e.fe.tive.dispe.se.s of both e.ige.us fungi.
