Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary dynamics.Malaria and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species worldwide.However,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite unexplored.Here,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian ecoregions.Wedetected 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird species.We showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously recorded.Moreover,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian parasites.Our outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ecoregions.Furthermore,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite richness.Generalist parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian parasites.These outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified haemosporidianlineages.Further studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

Seronegative disseminated Bartonella spp. infection in an immunocompromised patient

An 11 year old, hispanic girl with a history of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia was admitted to the hospital for symptoms compatible with Bartonella henselae infection. The first molecularly diagnosed case of disseminated Bartonella henselae infection was reported in an immunocompromised patient in Lima, Peru. The analysis was confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and automated sequencing of a liver biopsy sample, even though the serologic tests were negative. In conclusion, Bartonella spp. infection should have a particular diagnostic consideration in immunocompromised patients with fever of unknown origin and further investigation regarding the patient's past exposures with cats should also be elicited.

We consider a class of modified quasilinear Schrodinger equations-△u+k/2u△u^(2)=λα(x)u^(-α)+b(x)u^(β) in Ω with u(x)=0 on■Ω,where Ω■R^(N)is a bounded domain with a regular boundary,N≥3,a and b are bounded mensurable functions,0<α<1<β<2*-1 and k,λ≥0 are two parameters.We establish the global existence and multiplicity results of positive solutions in H^(1)_(0)(Ω)∩L^(∞)(Ω)for appropriate classes of parameters k andλand coefficients a(x)and b(x).

Effects of precipitation changes on the dynamics of sparse elm woodland in Northeastern China

Elm(Ulmus pumila L.)is the dominant tree species in the sparse elm woodland,the original vegetation in the Horqin Sandy Land.The effects of changes in precipitation on U.pumila trees have not been fully studied.We determined a dynamic model by considering the five stages in the U.pumila life cycle,i.***.seed,seedling,and juvenile,mature and over-mature tree stages.The effects of changes in precipitation on population density and age structure were then evaluated.Population density,after averaging all study developmental morphology stages,ranged from 16.67 individuals/m2 to 25.01 individuals/m2 under a mean annual precipitation(MAP)of 80%to 120%,respectively.This suggests that population density could increase as MAP also increased.The proportion of seedlings,and juvenile,mature and over-mature trees were 95.23%,4.58%,0.19%and 0.01%,respectively,under all precipitation levels.This indicates that precipitation had little effects on the developmental stages of the studied U.pumila populations in the Horqin Sandy Land.Additional water supply might be provided in addition to the natural rainfall that occurs in the region,for contributing to maintain U.pumila population density in the Horqin Sandy Land.

A computer vision system for early detection of anthracnose in sugar mango(Mangifera indica)based on UV-A illumination

The present work describes the development of a computer vision system for the early detection of anthracnose in sugar mango based on Ultraviolet A illumination(UV-A).Anthracnose,a disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum sp,is commonly found in the fruit of sugar mango(Mangifera indica).It manifests as surface defects including black spots and is responsible for reducing the quality of the fruit.Consequently,it decreases its commercial value.In more detail,this study poses a system that begins with image acquisition under white and ultraviolet illumination.Furthermore,it proposes to analyze the Red,Green and Blue color information(R,G,B)of the pixels under two types of illumination,using four different methods:RGB-threshold,RGB-Linear Discriminant Analysis(RGBLDA),UV-LDA,and UV-threshold.This analysis produces an early semantic segmentation of healthy and diseased areas of the mango image.The results showed that the combination of the linear discriminant analysis(LDA)and UV-A light(called UV-LDA method)in sugar mango images allows early detection of anthracnose.Particularly,this method achieves the identification of the disease one day earlier than by an expert with respect to the scale of anthracnose severity implemented in this work.

城市中心人口减少以及城市面积向外部扩张严重影响了城市的自然生态环境,这是目前世界许多大城市如加拿大蒙特利尔面临的共同问题。限制城市向外部的扩展需要从城市中心的吸引力来平衡。本文采用数理统计和综合归纳方法,在蒙特利尔城市中心最受欢迎的社区之一Sainte-Marie进行了两次现场调查,以定量分析城市中心目前的吸引力。结果表明,目前本地住宅/服务业的中高档需求有所提高,对代表城市特征的一些变量进行相关性分析,认为人们在城市中心的吸引力和阻力的权衡中,不仅仅以"自由居住意志"为唯一选择依据,而是继续生活在Sainte-Marie。本文结论还认为,目前通过城市邻里的吸引力水平限制城市扩张仍然面临很大的挑战。

Effect of Exogenous Melatonin on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth in Melon(Cucumis melo L.) Under Salt Stress

An investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of different application forms and concentrations of melatonin on germination and initial growth of melon plants in several different salinity conditions. We evaluated germination percentage and growth of seedlings and measured total chlorophyll content, relative electrolyte leakage, peroxidase activity, root viability, proline concentration, relative water content,Na^+/K^+ratio in green parts and K^+leakage from roots. Seed germination percentage under salt stress increased with treatments of 10 and50 μmol·L^(-1) melatonin. Seed treatment and plant watering with melatonin at 50 μmol·L^(-1) improved growth parameters and plants showed higher chlorophyll content as well as better biochemical parameters than non-treated plants. Results suggest that melatonin can alleviate the effect of salt stress during seed germination and first stages of plant development.

The peptide fraction of Bothrops jararaca snake venom induces toxicological effects on the male reproductive system after local envenomation in mice

Bothrops envenomation is complex and provokes prominent local tissue damage and systemic disturbances,but little is known about their effects on the male reproductive system.After intratesticular injection,the bioactive peptide fraction(Bj-PF)obtained from Bothrops jararaca snake venom changes the structure of different stages of the seminiferous epithelium cycle in adult mice.For the first time,we investigated whether local envenomation of Bj-PF induces toxicological effects on the male reproductive system,particularly on the seminiferous epithelium and Sertoli cells.Male adult mice were treated with 0.24 mg.kg^(-1) by intramuscular(i.m.)injection for 24 h.The testes samples were collected for morphological and morphometric evaluation.The toxicological effects of Bj-PF were also analyzed on mitochondrial metabolism and nitrite(NO2)production in 15P-1 Sertoli cell culture.Bj-PF changed the structure and function of the seminiferous epithelium,particularly the disruption of the epithelium and the presence of degenerated germ cells in the adluminal compartment,but there were no alterations in the basal compartment.Bj-PF increased the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium and decreased the lumen diameter of the tubule.Semiquantitative histological assessment of the degree of tubule degeneration revealed that Bj-PF also increased the number of hypospermatogenic tubules compared to control.Bj-PF reduced NO2 levels in 15P-1 Sertoli cells without changing the mitochondrial metabolism.Overall,the fact that Bj-PF alters the structure and function of the seminiferous epithelium suggests that bioactive peptides found in B.jararaca snake venom can have toxicological effects on the reproductive systems of affected male mice,providing new insight into the biological characteristics of snake venom and therapeutic strategies for envenomation inflammation.

The Spatial-Temporal Heterogeneity of Understory Light Availability in a Temperate Forest of North China

The spatial-temporal variation of understory light availability has important influences on species diversity and community assembly.However,the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of understory light availability have not been fully elucidated,especially in temperate deciduous,broad-leaved forests.In this study,the understory light availability was monitored monthly(May–October)in a temperate deciduous,broad-leaved forest in Henan Province,China.Differences in the light availability among different months and habitat types were statistically analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis method,respectively.Partial least squares path modeling(PLS-PM)was used to explore the direct and/or indirect effects of stand structure,dominant species and topographic factors on the light environment.Results showed that there were differences in light environments among the four habitat types and during the studied six months.The PLS-PM results showed that the stand structure and the dominant species were negatively correlated with the light environment,and the path coefficient values were−0.089(P=0.042)and−0.130(P=0.004),respectively.Our result indicated that the understory light availability exhibit a distinct spatial and temporal heterogeneity in temperate deciduous,broad-leaved forest of north China.The characteristics of woody plant community,especially the abundance of one of the dominant plant species,were the important factors affecting the understory light availability.
