Temperature is a key factor that shapes the distribution of organisms.Having knowledge about how species respond to temperature is relevant to devise strategies for addressing the impacts of climate change.Aquatic insects are particularly vulnerable to climate change,yet there is still much to learn about their ecology and distribution.In the Yungas ecoregion of Northwestern Argentina,cold-and warm-adapted species of the orders Ephemeroptera,Plecoptera,and Trichoptera(EPT)are segregated by elevation.We modeled the ecological niche of South American EPT species in this region using available data and projected their potential distribution in geographic space.Species were grouped based on their ecogeographic similarity,and we analyzed their replacement pattern along elevation gradients,focusing on the ecotone where opposing thermal preferences converge.Along this interface,we identified critical points where the combined incidence of cold and warm assemblages maximizes,indicating a significant transition zone.We found that the Montane Cloud Forest holds the interface,with a particularly greater suitability at its lower boundary.The main axis of the interface runs in a N-S direction and falls between 14°C-16°C mean annual isotherms.The probability of a particular location within a basin being classified as part of the interface increases as Kira’s warmth index approaches a score around 150.Understanding the interface is critical for defining the thermal limits of species distribution and designing biomonitoring programs.Changes in the location of thermal constants related to mountainous ecotones may cause vertical displacement of aquatic insects and vegetation communities.We have recognized significant temperature thresholds that serve as indicators of suitability for the interface.As global warming is anticipated to shift these indicators,we suggest using them to monitor the imprints of climate change on mountain ecosystems.

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and SKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 fibroblasts.Methods Phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HPLC)spectrometry.Viability and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,respectively.Ferrostatin-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BAPTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this event.Cytosolic calcium measurements were made using Fura-2-AM.Results HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,SKBR-3 and K562 cells(P<0.05).The viability of HEAV-treated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(P<0.05).Treatment of K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(P<0.05).The use of Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(P<0.01).HEAV-induced Ca^(2+)release mainly from lysosomes in K562 cells(P<0.01).Furthermore,BAPTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(P<0.05).Conclusions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

The present study was to evaluate the effect of trace minerals(Zn, Mn, and Cu) from complexed amino acid minerals(ZMCAA) and bis-glycinate chelated minerals(ZMCGly) in laying hen diets on performance,internal and external egg quality, yolk mineral deposition, intestinal morphometry, and bone characteristics. From 78 to 98 weeks of age, 400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a randomized design with 4 treatments with 10 replicates per treatment. Treatments were distributed in a 2 ×2 factorial arrangement using either Zn, Mn, and Cu of ZMCAA or ZMCGly source at 2 levels: low(20, 20,and 3.5 mg/kg of Zn, Mn, and Cu, respectively) or high(40, 40, and 7 mg/kg of Zn, Mn, and Cu,respectively). The analysis of variance was performed, and in cases where differences were observed, the means were compared using Tukey?s test(P < 0.05). The source and level of trace mineral supplementation had a significant impact on the performance of laying hens. Hens fed ZMCAA had higher egg production(P = 0.01), egg weight(P = 0.02), egg mass(P = 0.01), and lower feed conversion ratio(P =0.05) compared to those fed ZMCGly. The ZMCAA supplementation showed higher albumen height(P =0.01), albumen weight(P = 0.01), and eggshell thickness(P < 0.01). The deposition of Zn(P < 0.01), Mn(P< 0.01), and Cu(P < 0.01) in the egg yolk was greater for hens received ZMCAA. Tibia weight(P = 0.04)and bone densitometry(P < 0.01) in the tibia were higher with ZMCAA supplementation. In the small intestine, ZMCAA resulted in longer villi(P = 0.02) and shorter crypt depth(P = 0.01) in the duodenum.Jejunum and ileum measurements were influenced by the level and source of trace minerals(P < 0.05).Laying hens fed ZMCAA exhibited superior performance, egg quality, deposition of trace minerals in the egg yolk, and bone density compared to hens fed ZMCGly. In this study, older laying hens supplemented with ZMCAA at lower levels demonstrated adequate levels of supplementation.

Needle chlorosis(NC)in Pinus taeda L.systems in Brazil becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation cycles.In a study to identify factors contributing to yellowing needle chorosis(YNC),trees were grown in soils originating from contrasting parent materials,and soils and needles(whole,green and chlorotic portions)from 1-and 2-year-old branches and the first and second needle flush release at four sites with YNC on P.taeda were analyzed for various elements and properties.All soils had very low base levels(Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+)and K^(+))and P,suggesting a possible lack of multiple elements.YNC symptoms started at needle tips,then extended toward the needle base with time.First flush needles had longer portions with YNC than second flush needles did.Needles from the lower crown also had more symptoms along their length than those higher in the canopy.Symptoms were similar to those reported for Mg.In chlorotic portions,Mg and Ca concentrations were well below critical values;in particular,Mg levels were only one third of the critical value of 0.3 g kg^(-1).Collectively,results suggest that Mg deficiency is the primary reason for NC of P.taeda in various parent soils in Brazil.

The eastern side of Alta Floresta Mineral Province(AFMP)(União do Norte region)comprises an effusive/-subvolcanic phase,explosive phase,and epiclastic rocks.The effusive/subvolcanic phase comprises massive porphyritic rhyolite with different degrees of crystallinity,porphyritic rhyolite with flow structure,and microcrystalline rhyolite.The explosive phase is characterized by welded lapilli tuff,lapilli tuff with flow structure,stratified lapilli tuff,and tuff with accretionary lapilli.Sandstones and siltstones characterize epiclastic rocks.There are porphyritic rhyolite dikes that cut the volcanic sequence.The rocks of the Colíder Group are rhyolites(>70%SiO2)with calcic-alkaline to alkaline-calcic affinity.A rhyolitic rock is predominantly ferroan and metaluminous,while a pyroclastic rock is predominantly magnesian to ferroan and meta-to peraluminous in composition.The rocks have a high LREE content,and slight fractionation of HREE suggests they have hybrid geochemical characteristics of high potassium calc-alkaline,shoshonitic,and suggestive affinities of A-type magmas,probably produced in a post-collisional orogenic environment.These rocks have a relatively high level of Ba and Rb and a negative anomaly for Sr,P,Nb,Ta,and Ti,suggesting an intra-plate mantle source with contributions from a metasomatized mantle edge.The rocks do not have adakitic characteristics nor fertility for Cu-Au(Sr/Y<1.9 and LaN/YbN<38.0)as in other regions of the AFMP.The welded lapilli tuff rocks show U-Pb age of 1838±17 Ma and 1817±2 Ma and are the older explosive phases.The effusive/subvolcanic phase has U-Pb ages of 1800±3 Ma and 1792±3 Ma obtained in the massive porphyritic rhyolite.The age interval of approximately 46 Ma(1838–1792 Ma)suggests the presence of two or more volcanic cycles or distinct volcanic events.Based on the interpretation of volcanic and epiclastic deposits and remote sensing products,the paleoenvironmental reconstruction includes subaerial with effusive/subvolcanic and explosive stages in a probable eroded volc

Ensuring a sufficient oxygen supply is pivotal for the success of bioprinting applications since it fosters tissue integration and natural regeneration.Variation in oxygen concentration among diverse tissues necessitates the precise recreation of tissue-specific oxygen levels in imprinted constructs to support the survival of targeted cells.Although oxygen-releasing biomaterials,such as oxygen-generating microparticles(OMPs),have shown promise for enhancing the oxygen supply of microenvironments in injured tissues,whether this approach is scalable for large tissues and whether tissue-specific bioinks with varying OMP concentrations remain printable remain unknown.This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an innovative class of engineered oxygenated bioinks that combine colloidal-based microgels with OMPs.We report that incorporating nanosized calcium peroxide(nCaO_(2))and manganese oxide nanosheets(nMnO_(2))into hydrophobic polymeric microparticles enables precise modulation of oxygen release while controlling hydrogen peroxide release.Moreover,the fabrication of oxygenating and cytocompatible colloidal gels is achieved using an aqueous two-phase system.This study thoroughly evaluates the fundamental characteristics of the resulting bioink,including its rheological behaviors,printability,shape fidelity,mechanical properties,and oxygen release properties.Moreover,this study demonstrates the macroscopic scalability and cytocompatibility of printed constructs produced via cell-laden oxygenating colloidal bioinks.By showcasing the effectiveness of extrusion-based bioprinting,this study underscores how it can be used to fabricate biomimetic tissues,indicating its potential for new applications.The findings presented here advance the bioprinting field by achieving scalability with both high cell viability and the possibility of mimicking specifically oxygenated tissues.This work thereby offers a promising avenue for the development of functional tissues with enhanced physiological relevance.

Background:The mild cognitive impairment(MCI)stage among elderly individuals is very complex,and the level of diagnostic accu-racy is far from ideal.Some studies have tried to improve the’MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease(AD)’classification by further stratifying these patients into subgroups.Depression-related symptoms may play an important role in helping to better define the MCI stage in elderly individuals.Objective:In this work,we explored functional and structural differences in the brains of patients with nondepressed MCI(nDMCI)and patients with MCI with depressive symptoms(DMCI),and we examined how these groups relate to AD atrophy patterns and cognitive functioning.Methods:Sixty-five participants underwent MRI exams and were divided into four groups:cognitively normal,nDMCI,DMCI,and AD.We compared the regional brain volumes,cortical thickness,and white matter microstructure measures using diffusion tensor imaging among groups.Additionally,we evaluated changes in functional connectivity using fMRI data.Results:In comparison to the nDMCI group,the DMCI patients had more pronounced atrophy in the hippocampus and amygdala.Additionally,DMCI patients had asymmetric damage in the limbic-frontal white matter connection.Furthermore,two medial pos-terior regions,the isthmus of cingulate gyrus and especially the lingual gyrus,had high importance in the structural and functional differentiation between the two groups.Conclusion:It is possible to differentiate nDMCI from DMCI patients using MRI techniques,which may contribute to a better charac-terization of subtypes of the MCI stage.

The brown mussel Perna perna(Linnaeus,1758)is a valuable resource for aquaculture in tropical and subtropical coastal regions.It presents desirable characteristics for biomonitoring,including being sessile,widely distributed and abundant,and is a filter-feeder able to accumulate several classes of pollutants(e.g.,metals,hydrocarbons,among others).Mussels’biological responses to pollution exposure can be measured as biomarkers,which include alterations ranging from molecular to physiological levels,to estimate the degree of environmental contamination and its effects on biota.This full review compiles two decades(2000–2020)of literature concerning biological effects on P.perna mussel caused by environmental pollutants(i.e.,metals,hydrocarbons,and emerging pollutants),considering environmental and farm-based biomonitoring.Biochemical markers related to mussels’oxidative status were efficient for the biomonitoring of metals(i.e.,antioxidant enzymes associated with oxidative damage in biomolecules).Genotoxicity and cytotoxicity indicators(i.e.,comet,micronucleus,and neutral red assays)provided a depiction of hydrocarbon contamination.The neutral red assay gave a time-concentration cytotoxic response to a wide range of pollutants,including emerging pollutants(e.g.,pharmaceuticals and biocides)and hydrocarbons.Perna perna hemocyte parameters provided a useful approach for biocide biomonitoring.This paper summarizes useful biomarkers from molecular to physiological levels in this mussel species used to identify and quantify the degree of coastal pollution.An integrated biomarker analysis may provide a way to overcome possible biomarker variations and assess multi-polluted sites.Nevertheless,it is necessary to investigate biomarker variations according to natural factors(e.g.,season and gonad maturation stage)to standardize them for trustworthy biomonitoring.
