Granite-gneiss rock outcrop inselbergs are ancient stable ecosystems with old,climaticallybuffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs).Although inselbergs provide key ecosystem services,little is done for their conservation and,so far,a lot of their unknown evolutionary history has already been lost by human *** a fine-scale approach,here we tested if habitat and environmental filtering(the inselberg’s harshness)affect the evolutionary diversity of an Atlantic Forest inselberg in *** recorded all trees with a diameter at breast height≥5cm in 20 plots in four habitat types(total sampled area of 0.8 hectares),from highest to lowest:island,hillside,foothill,and semideciduous forest(matrix).We also collected soil samples for chemical,textural and physical soil *** fitted linear models to test the effects of soil and habitat on plotlevel metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure,lineage diversity,phylogeneticβ-diversity,and evolutionary *** found that the upper inselberg habitats contain a distinct set of ancient,closely related,harsh-tolerant lineages,as well as a subset of lineages that persist under harsh conditions with a certain degree of water *** inferior inselberg habitats harbor higher lineage diversity than expected by *** strongly predicted evolutionary *** concluded that soil depth,slope,nutrients and texture(environmental filtering)and habitat types and topography(habitat filtering)shape the evolutionary history contained in fine-scale inselberg habitats,which should encourage the conservation of these ancient ecosystems.

Induction and Characterization of Embryogenic Callus in Cotyledons Leaves of Tabebuia roseo-alba

Seeds from Tabebuia roseo-alba lose viability very fast. Moreover, the seed germination rate is very low, reaching approximately 40%. This study aimed at the in vitro induction of embryogenic callus. This technology allows subsequent plant regeneration as an alternative for the production of T. roseo-alba seedlings. Seeds were germinated in vitro and after 20 days, cotyledonary leaves, hypocotyls and root segments excised from these seedlings were used as explants. They were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with sucrose (30 g/L), agar (5.0 g/L) and different auxins. The effect of 2,4-D, picloram and NAA at concentrations 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg/L was evaluated. For the analysis of callus with embryogenic characteristics, ultra-structural study by scanning electron microscopy and cytochemical test with carmine were performed. The results showed that the culture medium supplemented with 4 mg/L NAA presented induction of callus with embryogenic characteristics in all explants used, with cotyledonary leaves showing the highest percentage (70% of explants with embryogenic characteristics). The use of 2, 4-D and picloram was efficient for callus formation in different explants, but no embryogenic characteristics were observed. From the ultra-structural analysis of callus with embryogenic characteristics, it was found that cells from different explant sources had isodiametric format. This format is similar to somatic embryos in globular stage. The cytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of pro-embryogenic cells in callus mass. Callus induced from cotyledonary leaves presented 46% positive reaction to carmine acetic.

Mitigation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Tropical Soils Amended with Poultry Manure and Sugar Cane Straw Biochars

Increases in greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, upon changes in land use and agricultural management, lead to a search for techniques that enhance carbon residence time in soil. Pyrolysis increases the recalcitrance of organic materials and enhances their activities as physical, chemical and biological soil conditioners. Emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O quantified from a sandy soil that was treated with three rates (12.5, 25 e 50 Mg·ha-1) of either non-pyrolysed poultry manure and sugarcane straw or biochars, pyrolysed at two contrasting temperatures (350°C and 650°C). Subsequently, the flux of the three gases was converted and compared in a standard unit (CO2eq). The added biochars, significantly reduced GHG emissions, especially CO2, relative to the non-pyrolysed materials. The greatest differences between applied rates of poultry manure, relative sugarcane straw, both to biochar and raw material, and the positive response to the increase of pyrolysis temperture, confirm the importance of raw material choice for biochar production, with recalcitrance being an important initial characteristic. Greater emissions occurred with intermediate rate of biochars (25 Mg·ha-1) amendment to the soil. These intermediate rates had higher microbial biomass, provided by an intermediate C/N ratio derived from the original soil and the biochar, promoting combined levels of labile C and oxygen availability, leading to an optimal environment for microbiota.

Remoras are commensal fish of various marine species,such as sharks,swordfishes,turtles,dolphins,manta rays and *** specimen of marlin sucker Remora osteochir was evaluated using computed tomography for skeletal digital reconstruction,digital radiology for general evaluation and bone counting,and the double contrast technique to distinguish coelomic *** radiographic images,it was possible to observe otoliths in the center of the neurocranium,to count 27 vertebrae,nine pairs of ribs,and to detect the presence of the hipural and epural bones near of the caudal *** double contrast images,it was possible to visualize the swim bladder,gills,heart,liver,stomach and *** the tomographic images and reconstructions,it was possible to identify the intercalar bones of the cephalic disc;the spine with vertebral bodies composed of neural arches and ventral ribs;and the pectoral girdle formed by posttemporal,cleithrum and scapulocoracoid *** was concluded that digital radiology and computed tomography were able to describe anatomical structures of marlin sucker *** without the need for dissection.

Vertical Loads Effects Applied on the Pavement Considering the Variation on Tire Pressure

The main objective of this paper is to analyse the vertical loads effects applied on the pavement, considering the variation of tire pressure, from a truck"s front suspension. For the measurements, a durability test track located in Brazil has been used. The tire pressure was increased by 10 psi from 90 psi to 130 psi with a constant load of 6 t on the front suspension, the maximum allowed load for front axle according to Brazilian legislation. By applying relative damage concept, it is possible to conclude that the variation on the tire pressure will not affect significantly the load applied on the pavement. However, it is recommended to repeat the same methodology in order to analyse the influence on the variation of the other quarter car model variants.

Aims Understanding succession in tropical forest is an important aspect of vegetation science,but to date,successional processes in sea-sonally dry tropical forests(SDtFs)have received much less atten-tion than evergreen humid tropical *** aim to fill this knowledge *** We investigated vegetation succession in SDtF areas consisting of three different successional stages(early,intermediate,late),and a SDtF-savanna ecotone in the municipal district of Juramento,north of Minas Gerais State,*** twelve 400 m2 plots in each area,we compared vegetation parameters and structural variables(absolute density and basal area)and examined the floristic composition of the tree component to find gradients of *** Findings We found evidence of species turnover along a successional gradi-ent,with the intermediate stage showing the highest species rich-ness and *** was accompanied with a significant increase in the number of tree individuals and basal area from the early to intermediate successional ***,the intermediate and late SDtF successional stages were more similar in structure and *** ecotone was the most species rich and was similar to the intermediate SDtF and early successional stage in species richness and floristic composition *** results will have implications for guiding SDtF management and recovery programs.

The current study is developed based on one of the types of subgrade rupture risk suggested by Selig and Waters (1994). It aims to evaluate subgrade stability railroad, which consists of the slope stability analysis of a railway yard embankment subjected to a wagon load type gondola parked on this track. This proposed analysis was taken into consideration because there are Brazilian railroads in high deterioration level. In some of these lines the tracks are submitted to increasing amount of load every year. The adopted model slope stability to the studied railroad embankments considers the rupture on circular line. It was applied the Geoslope-Slope/W software, version 6, to the evaluation of the platform-slope system. Several situations are adopted to reach the minimum safety slope, permitting to analyze the platform stability to keep railroad traffic under adequate safety level.

Studying the interaction of components is basic for a railroad project, which is also very important for creating maintenance procedures based on predictions from a model that assumes adequate performance. To determine these interactions, which can have a great number of combinations, the use of a computational model is of vital importance, in this case, the program FERROVIA 1.0 (RAILROAD 1.0) was used. A critical study developed the program FERROVIA 1.0, and its variables were characterized based on values observed in the literature. After initial characterization was carried out, a comparative study was performed on the sensitivity between these variables and the indications of significant behavior for a railway deformed by the known load of a wheel. A statistical program was used to correlate the elements. The intention was to launch the program FERROVIA 1.0 and later use it for 2,187 combinations. The data used in these correlations corresponded to the normal values for the elements used in railroad engineering practice. Our main goal is to understand the behavior of the track vertical deflection according to the variation of the scaling of the various elements of the railway.
