Fabrication and Testing of Self Cleaning Dry Adhesives Utilizing Hydrophobicity Gradient

In this paper we present a method to create a hydrophobicity gradient on the surface of a Polydimethylsiloxane （PDMS） dry adhesive. The method consists of the partial silanization of the surface of the dry adhesive by Chemical Vapour Deposition （CVD） of octadecyltrichlorosilane （OTS）. The partial silanization of the surface of the sample results in a hydrophobic to hy- drophilic gradient across the surface of the dry adhesive. The resulting change in hydrophobicity across the surface of the dry adhesive results in the uphill motion of a droplet of water, which appears to be directly proportional to the area of contact between the droplet and the adhesive. Normal adhesion testing is performed to quantify the effect of the hydrophobic gradient across the surface of the sample. While a variation in adhesion are only minimally affected by the silanization, and the motion strength across the sample is measured, the adhesive properties of the droplet of water doesn＇t cause any loss of adhesion.

The design of high voltage and medium voltage AC and DC standoff insulators,and,in general,of insulation systems where surface and interface properties are predominant factors,is based on specifications and standards that rely upon long-term experiences and lab *** insulating properties depend on electrical and thermal stresses,besides environmental factors,and the inception of extrinsic ageing phenomena,such as partial discharges,can be already a cause of reduced reliability and premature failure(for organic insulating materials).An innovative approach,based on field simulation,discharge modelling,and partial discharge inception measurements is presented by the authors,which can establish a solid basis to optimise insulation design for any type of supply voltage *** method,the three-leg approach,is applied here to a cable system under AC sinusoidal voltage,but it can work for any type of insulation system,such as bushings,switch gears,transformers,rotating machines,and power electronics boards.

The present work presents an approach for the optimized design of small gas turbine combustors, that integrates a0-D code, CFD analyses and an advanced game theory multi-objective optimization algorithm. The output of the0-D code is a baseline design of the combustor, given the required fuel characteristics, the basic geometry (tubularor annular) and the combustion concept (i.e. lean premixed primary zone or diffusive processes). For the optimizationof the baseline design a simplified parametric CAD/mesher model is then defined and submitted to a CFDcode. Free parameters of the optimization process are position and size of the liner hole arrays, their total area andthe shape of the exit duct, while different objectives are the minimization of NOx emissions, pressure losses andcombustor exit Pattern Factor. A 3D simulation of the optimized geometry completes the design procedure. As afirst demonstrative example, the integrated design process was applied to a tubular combustion chamber with alean premixed primary zone for a recuperative methane-fuelled small gas turbine of the 100 kW class.

Investigation on Walking and Pacing Stability of German Shepherd Dog for Different Locomotion Speeds

The motion of three German Shepherd Dogs on a treadmill was recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system. The locomotion speed of the dog was respectively set at 4km·h^-1, 5.5km·h^-1, 7 km·h^-1 and 8.5 km·h^-1. By processing the acquired data, the joint trajectories of the dogs＇ hind limbs were computed and a time series analysis was conducted. Joint angle-angle diagrams were obtained and the Lyapunov exponents were computed. Results show that the stability decreased when speed increased, which can be attributed to the decrease in the stance phase respect to the swing phase when speed is increased. Results also show that the dogs changed gait during the tests, namely walking in the range of 4 km·h^-1 to 7 km·h^-1 and pacing at 8.5 km·h^-1 A significant drop in stability was observed from walking to pacing.

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) devices can be used to analyze the mechanisms underlying several vascular phenomena, such as hyperaemia. Commercial devices have limited dynamics and do not allow the delivery of customizable compressive pressure patterns, making the analysis of such phenomena difficult, which may require the application of long stimulations with low amplitude as well as fast compressions with higher pressure level. To overcome these issues, a novel pneumotronic device aimed to the investigation of the physiological effects induced by limb compressions is conceived and presented in this work. The design requirements of the system, capable of delivering customizable compressive patterns in the range 0 mmHg-200 mmHg, are outlined. The final prototype architecture is described, and a mathematical model of the entire system, also including the interaction between the device and the limb tissues, is proposed. The performance of the device was evaluated in several conditions by means of simulations, whose results were compared to the data collected from experimental trials in order to validate the model. The outcomes of both experimentation and simulation trials proved the effectiveness of the solution proposed. A possible employment of this device for the investigation of the rapid compression-induced hyperaemia is presented. Other potential applications concern the wide range of intermittent-pneumatic compression treatments.

Glaucoma, the leading cause of visual impairment and irreversible blindness worldwide, is a multifactorial, progressive optic neuropathy characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells, alterations of the optic nerve head, and specific visual field defects. Clinical evidence shows that intraocular pressure is the major risk factor of the treatable disease. However, in some patients, glaucoma develops and continues to progress despite normal intraocular pressure values, suggesting that other risk factors are involved in the disease. Consequently, neuroprotective treatments, focused on preventing retinal ganglion cells death by acting on different therapeutic strategies but not focused on intraocular pressure reduction, has therefore become of great interest. In this contest, coenzyme Q10, showing evidence in slowing or reversing pathological changes typical of the disease, has been proposed as a potential neuroprotective agent in glaucoma. In this review, we describe the possible mechanisms of action of coenzyme Q10 and the recent evidence in literature regarding the neuroprotective activity of the molecule.

Measuring partial discharges in DC insulation systems is an issue due to the lack of a reference relating the voltage waveform to the physics of discharge ***,DC is not always steady state,due to voltage and load transients that generate electric field profile variations inside an insulation system,which can affect partial discharge inception likelihood and *** discharge measurement technology must be able to separate discharge pulses from noise and identify the type of sources generating partial discharge,which is related to condition assessment and ***,measurement and analysis should be automatic and unsupervised,in order to get rid,partially or totally,of expert *** study addresses a new approach to partial discharge measurements in DC insulation systems,presenting algorithms for separation,recognition and identification,which are effective both in DC steady state and during voltage(and load)*** algorithms are automatic and do not require expert *** cases of algorithm application on test objects consisting of multilayer polymeric specimens with an internal cavity and defective cable models are presented and *** effectiveness is proved,at least at a laboratory level,with effective noise separation and identification of discharge typology.
