Legged robots relying on dry adhesives for vertical climbing are required to preload their feet against the wall to increase contact surface area and consequently maximize adhesion force. Preloading a foot causes a redistribution of forces in the entire robot, including contact forces between the other feet and the wall. An inappropriate redistribution of these forces can cause irreparable detachment of the robot from the vertical surface. This paper investigates an optimal preloading and detaching strategy that minimizes energy consumption, while retaining safety, during locomotion on vertical surfaces. The gait of a six-legged robot is planned using a quasi-static model that takes into account both the structure of the robot and the character- istics of the adhesive material. The latter was modelled from experimental data collected for this paper. A constrained optimi- zation routine is used, and its output is a sequence of optimal posture and motor torque set-points.

The excellent climbing performance of the gecko is inspiring engineers and researchers for the design of artificial systems aimed at moving on vertical surfaces. Climbing robots could perform many useful tasks such as surveillance, inspection, repair, cleaning, and exploration. This paper presents and discusses the design, fabrication, and evaluation of two climbing robots which mimic the gait of the gecko. The first robot is designed considering macro-scale operations on Earth and in space. The second robot, whose motion is controlled using shape memory alloy actuators, is designed to be easily scaled down for micro-scale applications. Proposed bionic systems can climb up 65 degree slopes at a speed of 20 mm·s^-1.

AIM: To understand and analyze what young Italian males attending high school would like to ask andrologists but do not know how to or do not have the courage to do ***: As part of our "Androlife" campaign, we invited 1565 students attending the last year of high school to participate in our research. Firstly, they attended a lesson on general and andrological health and then, on a voluntary basis, they responded to a survey and were subjected to a preventive andrological visit. RESULTS: The data analysis showed that the main topics in which young people are interested are: sexual activity and sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, andrological health and fertility, and ***: This study highlights that young people are very interested in sexual health issues and that they have specific needs and interests with regard to sexual health information. Public education campaigns such as Androlife should be supported and further improved on the basis of the advice received by young participants. Sexual and reproductive health educationtargeting adolescents and young adults represent the basis both for wellness and for fertility preservation, and thus benefits of increased support to educational campaigns would be apparent not only in terms of individual health but also in terms of cost reduction in public spending.

Large Eddy Simulation of the By-pass Transition Process under Different Inlet Turbulence Conditions

The transition process of the boundary layer developing over a flat plate with elevated inlet Free Stream Turbulence Intensity(FSTI)has been studied by means of Large Eddy Simulation(LES).To this purpose,four cases with different inflow disturbances have been tested varying the magnitude and the length scale of *** has been performed by using the finite-volume ANSYS Fluent *** computational domain,which was constituted by a rectangular domain with a zero thickness plate,was based on an ERCOFTAC test case in order to provide a validation with a well-known set of data by comparing the boundary layer integral parameters and mean and fluctuating streamwise velocity *** four cases were discussed within the paper by looking at classical statistical properties as well as advanced post-processing *** was shown that the decrease in the free stream turbulence level postpones the transition location,whereas the variation of the integral length scale has a very low influence on the distribution of the time-mean flow *** Orthogonal Decomposition(POD)has been applied to the instantaneous LES flow fields in order to provide a statistical representation of the structures responsible for transition and their response to free-stream turbulence intensity and length *** presence of vortical filaments parallel to the wall,typically referred as boundary layer streaks,is clearly identified;their characteristic dimensions and how they change as a function of FSTI properties were analyzed within the paper.

A simple method,based on harmonic wavelet analysis is proposed for the decomposition of a given energy bounded signal into a periodic signal and a *** a denoising method,the first part signal it might represent a smooth periodic function while the pulse is a singular unpredicted perturbation (taken as a fault).It will be shown that,under some general conditions,by a simple projection into two disjoint space of functions we can easily separate the periodic component of the signal from the fault (represented by the singular pulse).

A traditional belief widespread across the biomedical community was that dietary habits and genetic predisposition were the basic factors causing colorectal *** more recent times,however,a growing evidence has shown that other determinants can be very important in increasing(or reducing) incidence of this *** hypothesis that environmental and occupational risk factors are associated with colorectal cancer is gaining ground,and high risks of colorectal cancer have been reported among workers in some industrial *** aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiologic relationship between colorectal cancer and occupational exposures to several industrial activities,by means of a scientific literature review and *** work pointed out increased risks of colorectal cancer for labourers occupied in industries with a wide use of chemical compounds,such as leather(RR = 1.70,95%CI:1.24-2.34),basic metals(RR = 1.32,95%CI:1.07-1.65),plastic and rubber manufacturing(RR = 1.30,95%CI:0.98-1.71 and RR = 1.27,95%CI:0.92-1.76,respectively),besides workers in the sector of repair and installation of machinery exposed to asbestos(RR = 1.40,95%CI:1.07-1.84).Based on our results,the estimated crude excess risk fraction attributable to occupational exposure ranged from about 11% to about 15%.However,homogeneous pattern of association between colorectal cancer and industrial branches did not emerge from this review.
