Liver fibrosis and tissue architectural change measurement using fractal-rectified metrics and Hurst's exponent

AIM： To provide the accurate alternative metrical means of monitoring the effects of new antiviral drugs on the reversal of newly formed collagen. METHODS： Digitized histological biopsy sections taken from 209 patients with chronic C virus hepatitis with different grade of fibrosis or cirrhosis, were measured by means of a new, rapid, user-friendly, fully computeraided method based on the international system meter rectified using fractal principles. RESULTS： The following were described： geometric perimeter, area and wrinkledness of fibrosis; the collation of the Knodell, Sheuer, Ishak and METAVIR scores with fractal-rectified metric measurements; the meaning of the physical composition of fibrosis in relation to the magnitude of collagen islets; the intra- and inter-biopsy sample variability of these parameters; the ＂staging＂ of biopsy sections indicating the pathway covered by fibrosis formation towards its maximum known value; the quantitative liver tissue architectural changes with the Hurst exponent. CONCLUSION： Our model provides the first metrical evaluations of the geometric properties of fibrosis and the quantitative architectural changes of the liver tissue. The representativeness of histological sections of the whole liver is also discussed in the light of the results obtained with the Hurst coefficient.

Low-energy electron microscopy （LEEM） has been used to study the structure, initial growth orientation, growth progression, and the number of layers of atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride （h-BN） films. The h-BN films are grown on heteroepitaxial Co using chemical vapor deposition （CVD） at low pressure. Our findings from LEEM studies include the growth of monolayer film having two, oppositely oriented, triangular BN domains commensurate with the Co lattice. The growth of h-BN appears to be self-limiting at a monolayer, with thicker domains only appearing in patches, presumably initiated between domain boundaries. Reflectivity measurements of the thicker h-BN films show oscillations resulting from the resonant electron transmission through quantized electronic states of the h-BN films, with the number of minima scaling up with the number of h-BN layers. First principles density functional theory （DFT） calculations show that the positions of oscillations are related to the electronic band structure of h-BN.

Force Myography （FMG）, which monitors pressure or radial deformation of a limb, has recently been proposed as a po- tential alternative for naturally controlling bionic robotic prostheses. This paper presents an exploratory case study aimed at evaluating how FMG behaves when a person with amputation uses a hand prosthetic prototype. One volunteer （transradial amputation） participated in this study, which investigated two experimental cases： static and dynamic. The static case considered forearm muscle contractions in a fixed elbow and shoulder positions whereas the dynamic case included movements of the elbow and shoulder. When considering eleven different hand grips, static data showed an accuracy over 99%, and dynamic data over 86% （within-trial analysis）. The across-trial analysis, that takes into account multiple trials in the same data collection set, showed a meaningful accuracy respectively of 81% and 75% only for the reduced six grips setup. While further research is needed to increase these accuracies, the obtained results provided initial evidence that this technology could represent an in- teresting alternative that is worth exploring for controlling prosthesis.

Diagnosing insulation intrinsic ageing is essential for preventing insulation failure of submarine cables,and in case of failure,helping in any decision about maintenance *** this study,a novel aged cable diagnosis approach based on high-voltage frequency domain spectroscopy(HV-FDS)with broader frequency width is proposed to analyse the high-field polarisation characteristics and conductivity behaviour of 500 kV submarine polymeric cables insulation,aiming to support the evaluation of overall insulation *** measurement principle of HV-FDS and relaxation mechanism are stated,and then focus is on studying the extent of change of polarisation and conduction properties of submarine cables insulation as a function of ageing stress and ***,the high-field polarisation characteristics and conductivity behaviour are discussed in-depth based on the carrier transport and trap ***,the novel diagnostic indicator based on the high-field characteristics is extracted to quantify the thermal ageing state of submarine cables *** show that the high-field polarisation characteristics and conductivity behaviour seem to become sensitive diagnostic quantities if measured at reasonably high voltage,which are able to reveal mechanisms associated with thermo-oxidative ageing as that generated in the testing procedure considered in this *** is considerably higher than that experienced in typical dielectric spectroscopy approaches.

The manufacturing of nanomaterials by the electrospinning process requires accurate and meticulous inspection of related scanning electron microscope(SEM)images of the electrospun nanofiber,to ensure that no structural defects are *** presence of anomalies prevents practical application of the electrospun nanofibrous material in ***,the automatic monitoring and quality control of nanomaterials is a relevant challenge in the context of Industry *** this paper,a novel automatic classification system for homogenous(anomaly-free)and non-homogenous(with defects)nanofibers is *** inspection procedure aims at avoiding direct processing of the redundant full SEM ***,the image to be analyzed is first partitioned into subimages(nanopatches)that are then used as input to a hybrid unsupervised and supervised machine learning *** the first step,an autoencoder(AE)is trained with unsupervised learning to generate a code representing the input image with a vector of relevant ***,a multilayer perceptron(MLP),trained with supervised learning,uses the extracted features to classify non-homogenous nanofiber(NH-NF)and homogenous nanofiber(H-NF)*** resulting novel AE-MLP system is shown to outperform other standard machine learning models and other recent state-of-the-art techniques,reporting accuracy rate up to92.5%.In addition,the proposed approach leads to model complexity reduction with respect to other deep learning strategies such as convolutional neural networks(CNN).The encouraging performance achieved in this benchmark study can stimulate the application of the proposed scheme in other challenging industrial manufacturing tasks.

We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219,LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD B,V,Rcand Iccomplete light *** ultra-short period nature of these stars,as reported by Drake et al.,is confirmed and the system’s periods are *** light curves were modeled using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney *** necessary,cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light *** a result,we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary system belonging to W subclass with a mass ratio of q=1.61 and a shallow degree of contact of 14.8%where the primary component is hotter than the secondary one by 500 *** 1286561 and LINEAR2602707 are detached binary systems with mass ratios q=3.467 and q=0.987 *** detached systems are low-mass M-type eclipsing binaries with similar *** marginal contact,fill-out factor and temperature difference between components of CSS J112237.1+395219 suggest that this system may be at a key evolutionary state predicted by thermal relaxation oscillation(TRO)*** the estimated absolute parameters,we conclude that our systems share common properties with other ultrashort period binaries.

Background Acute osteomyelitis still represents a significant clinical challenge,with an increasing incidence in paediatric population.A careful assessment and a rapid diagnosis with proper timing and choice of empirical antimicrobial therapy are necessary to avoid *** initial treatment should consist of empirical antibiotic therapy,to cover the major responsible pathogens in each age *** sources We made a literature search with PubMed and Cochrane database from 2000 to 2019 in English,French,and Spanish languages using the key words"osteomyelitis,children,clinical,diagnosis,and treatment".Results The child's clinical features,age,and the microbiological profile of the geographic area should be evaluated for diagnosis and in the choice of antibiotic *** data suggest the administration of intravenous antibiotics for a short period,with subsequent oral therapy,according to the improvement of clinical status and inflammatory *** children older than 3 months,the shift to oral medications is already possible after a short course of intravenous therapy,until *** timing for the shift from cefazolin to cephalexin or cefuroxime,intravenous clindamycin to oral clindamycin,and intravenous ceftriaxone+oxacillin to oral equivalents will be decided according to the improvement of clinical status and inflammatory *** also present the approach to osteomyelitis due to difficult pathogens,such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)and Panton-Valentine leukocidin(PVL)-positive *** *** In this review,we present the current approach to the clinical diagnosis and management of osteomyelitis in childhood,with an update on recent recommendations,as a useful instrument to understand the rationale of antibiotic therapy.

Sphincteroplasty(SP)is the operation most frequently performed in patients suffering from moderate-to-severe anal incontinence(AI)who do not respond to conservative *** costly surgeries,such as artificial bowel sphincter(ABS)and electro-stimulated graciloplasty,have been more or less abandoned due to their high morbidity *** invasive procedures are widely used,such as sacral neuromodulation and injection of bulking agents,but both are costly and the latter may cure only mild *** early outcome of SP is usually good if the sphincters are not markedly denervated,but its effect diminishes over *** is more often performed for post-traumatic than for idiopathic *** may also be associated to the Altemeier procedure,aimed at reducing the recurrence rate of rectal prolapse,and may be useful when AI is due either to injury to the sphincter,or to a narrowed rectum following the procedure for prolapse and haemorrhoids(PPH)and stapled transanal rectal resection(STARR).The outcome of SP is likely to be improved with biological meshes and post-operative pelvic floor *** is more effective in males than in multiparous women,whose sphincters are often denervated,and its post-operative morbidity is *** conclusion,SP,being both low-cost and safe,remains a good option in the treatment of selected patients with AI.
