Performance of Forearm FMG and sEMG for Estimating Elbow, Forearm and Wrist Positions

The ability to track upper extremity movement during activity of daily living has the potential to facilitate the recovery of individuals with neurological or physical injuries. Hence, the use of Surface Electromyography （sEMG） signals to predict upper extremity movement is an area of interest in the research community. A less established technique, Force Myography （FMG）, which uses force sensors to detect forearm muscle contraction patterns, is also able to detect some movements of the arm. This paper investigates the comparative performance of sEMG and FMG when predicting wrist, forearm and elbow positions using signals extracted from the forearm only. Support Vector Machine （SVM） and Linear Discriminant Analysis （LDA） classifiers were used to evaluate the prediction performance of both FMG and sEMG data. Ten healthy volunteers participated in this study. Under a cross validation across a repetition evaluation scheme, the SVM classifier obtained averaged accuracies of 84.3%, 82.4% and 71.0%, respectively, for predicting elbow, forearm and wrist positions using FMG; while sEMG yielded 75.4%, 83.4% and 92.4% accuracies for predicting the same respective positions. The accuracies obtained using SVM are slightly, but statistical significantly, higher than the ones obtained using LDA. However, the trends on the classification performances between FMG and sEMG are consistent. These results also indicate that the forearm FMG pattern is highly influenced by the change of elbow position, while the forearm sEMG is less subjected to the change. Overall, both forearm FMG and sEMG techniques provide abundant information that can be utilized for tracking the upper extremity movements.

In this paper an asymptotic formula of Voronovskaja type for a multivariate extension of the Kantorovich generalized sampling series is given. Moreover a quantitative version in terms of some moduli of smoothness is established. Finally some particular examples of kernels are discussed, as the Bochner-Riesz kernel and the multivariate splines.

Two-dimensional materials are today a solid reality in condensed matter physics due to the disruptive discoveries about *** class of the X-enes,namely,graphene-like single element artificial crystals,is quickly emerging driven by the high-momentum generated by ***,in addition to the graphene properties,shows up incidentally at the end of Moore’s law debate in the electronic ***,silicene occurs as the crafted shrunk version of silicon long yearned by device manufacturers to improve the performances of their *** the periodic table kinship with graphene,silicene and the X-enes must deal with the twofold problem of their metastable nature,i.e.,the stabilization on a substrate and out of vacuum *** on different substrates and deep characterization through electronic and optical techniques of silicene in the early days have been now following by the tentative steps towards reliable integration of silicene into ***,we review three paradigmatic cases of silicene grown by molecular beam epitaxy showing three different possible applications,aiming at extending the exploitation of silicene out of the nanoelectronics field and thus keeping silicon a key player in nanotechnology,just in a thinner fashion.

Recovering Navier–Stokes Equations from Asymptotic Limits of the Boltzmann Gas Mixture Equation

This paper is devoted to the derivation of macroscopic fluid dynamics from the Boltzmann mesoscopic dynamics of a binary mixture of hard-sphere gas *** the hydrodynamics limit is performed by employing different time and space *** paper shows that,depending on the magnitude of the parameters which define the scaling,the macroscopic quantities(number density,mean velocity and local temperature)are solutions of the acoustic equation,the linear incompressible Euler equation and the incompressible Navier–Stokes *** derivation is formally tackled by the recent moment method proposed by[***,et al.,***.63(1991)323]and the results generalize the analysis performed in[***,et al.,*** ***.29(2015)240].

Bioinspired Dry Adhesive Materials and Their Application in Robotics： A Review

Dry adhesives inspired from climbing animals, such as geckos and spiders, rely on van der Waals forces to attach to the opposing surface. Biological fibrillar dry adhesives have a hierarchical structure closely resembling a tree： the surface of the skin on the animal＇s feet is covered in arrays of slender micro-fibrils, each of which supports arrays of fibrils in submicron dimensions. These nano-meter size fibrils can conform closely to the opposing surfaces to induce van der Waals interaction. Bioinspired dry adhesives have been developed in research laboratories for more than a decade. To mimic the biological fibrillar adhesives, fibrillar structures have been prepared using a variety of materials and geometrical arrangements. In this review article, the mechanism and selected fabrication methods of fibrillar adhesives are summarized for future reference in adhesive development. Robotic applications of these bioinspired adhesives are also introduced in this article. Various successful appli- cations of bioinspired fibrillar adhesives can shed light on developing smart adhesives for use in automation.

Fabrication and Testing of Self Cleaning Dry Adhesives Utilizing Hydrophobicity Gradient

In this paper we present a method to create a hydrophobicity gradient on the surface of a Polydimethylsiloxane （PDMS） dry adhesive. The method consists of the partial silanization of the surface of the dry adhesive by Chemical Vapour Deposition （CVD） of octadecyltrichlorosilane （OTS）. The partial silanization of the surface of the sample results in a hydrophobic to hy- drophilic gradient across the surface of the dry adhesive. The resulting change in hydrophobicity across the surface of the dry adhesive results in the uphill motion of a droplet of water, which appears to be directly proportional to the area of contact between the droplet and the adhesive. Normal adhesion testing is performed to quantify the effect of the hydrophobic gradient across the surface of the sample. While a variation in adhesion are only minimally affected by the silanization, and the motion strength across the sample is measured, the adhesive properties of the droplet of water doesn＇t cause any loss of adhesion.

An Integrated Approach for Optimal Design of Micro Gas Turbine Combustors

The present work presents an approach for the optimized design of small gas turbine combustors, that integrates a0-D code, CFD analyses and an advanced game theory multi-objective optimization algorithm. The output of the0-D code is a baseline design of the combustor, given the required fuel characteristics, the basic geometry (tubularor annular) and the combustion concept (i.e. lean premixed primary zone or diffusive processes). For the optimizationof the baseline design a simplified parametric CAD/mesher model is then defined and submitted to a CFDcode. Free parameters of the optimization process are position and size of the liner hole arrays, their total area andthe shape of the exit duct, while different objectives are the minimization of NOx emissions, pressure losses andcombustor exit Pattern Factor. A 3D simulation of the optimized geometry completes the design procedure. As afirst demonstrative example, the integrated design process was applied to a tubular combustion chamber with alean premixed primary zone for a recuperative methane-fuelled small gas turbine of the 100 kW class.

Investigation on Walking and Pacing Stability of German Shepherd Dog for Different Locomotion Speeds

The motion of three German Shepherd Dogs on a treadmill was recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system. The locomotion speed of the dog was respectively set at 4km·h^-1, 5.5km·h^-1, 7 km·h^-1 and 8.5 km·h^-1. By processing the acquired data, the joint trajectories of the dogs＇ hind limbs were computed and a time series analysis was conducted. Joint angle-angle diagrams were obtained and the Lyapunov exponents were computed. Results show that the stability decreased when speed increased, which can be attributed to the decrease in the stance phase respect to the swing phase when speed is increased. Results also show that the dogs changed gait during the tests, namely walking in the range of 4 km·h^-1 to 7 km·h^-1 and pacing at 8.5 km·h^-1 A significant drop in stability was observed from walking to pacing.

A new approach to the design of surface subsystems of polymeric insulators for HV and MV apparatus under AC voltage

The design of high voltage and medium voltage AC and DC standoff insulators,and,in general,of insulation systems where surface and interface properties are predominant factors,is based on specifications and standards that rely upon long-term experiences and lab *** insulating properties depend on electrical and thermal stresses,besides environmental factors,and the inception of extrinsic ageing phenomena,such as partial discharges,can be already a cause of reduced reliability and premature failure(for organic insulating materials).An innovative approach,based on field simulation,discharge modelling,and partial discharge inception measurements is presented by the authors,which can establish a solid basis to optimise insulation design for any type of supply voltage *** method,the three-leg approach,is applied here to a cable system under AC sinusoidal voltage,but it can work for any type of insulation system,such as bushings,switch gears,transformers,rotating machines,and power electronics boards.
