The aim of this study was to investigate whether a brief neuropsychological battery consisting of a limited number of cognitive tests and an evaluation of the behavioural domains intended to discriminate between frontotemporal dementia (fv-FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), constitutes a useful instrument for making.a.differential clinical diagnosis between these two pathologies. Nineteen fv-FTD and 39 AD patients were compared on cognitive tasks (assessing memory, executive functions, lang.a.e and constructional praxis) and on the NPI behavioural assessment. A stepwise discriminant analysis was performed to identify the linear combination of cognitive and behavioural measures able to best discriminate between the two groups. One test for each of the investigated cognitive domains (Delayed Prose Recall, FAS verbal fluency, Boston naming test, Rey's Figure A Copy) and the four subscales of the Neuropsychiatry Inventory (NPI) which best differentiated between fv-FTD and AD patients (apathy, disinhi bition, euphoria, aberrant motor behaviour) were used. The analysis selected Rey's Figure A Copy, FAS verbal fluency and NPI apathy subscale as the best discri minants between fv-FTD and AD patients. The final equation assigned 73.7%of th e fv-FTD patients and 94.7%of the AD patients to the correct diagnostic group. A validation study conducted on a new independent sample of 11 fv-FTD and 22 A D patients confirmed the high sensitivity (82.6 %) and specificity (81.8%) of the diagnostic equation in assigning fv-FTD and AD patients to the correct deme ntia group. Although both cognitive and behavioural differences exist between FT D and AD, previous studies have aimed at differentiating the two pathologies by considering the two aspects separately and discriminant analyses were focused on ly on neuropsychological or neuropsychiatric evaluations. Effectiveness of 0.1% topical salicylic acid on blepharoconjunctivitis affecting g.a.coma patients treated with topical prostag.a.din analogues:a prospective randomized trial

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of 0.1% topical salicylic acid（TSA） to treat iatrogenic chronic blepharoconjunctivitis in patients with primary open angle g.a.coma（POAg）, treated with topical prostag.a.din analogues（TPAs）.METHODS: Totally 60 patients were randomly distributed into 3 equal size groups, two of which treated with 0.1% TSA（OMKASA;） and 0.1% topical clobetasone butyrate（TCB; VISUCLOBEN;） respectively, and one consisting of untreated controls. The parameters taken into account at baseline（T0） and after 30 d（T1） of therapy were: conjunctival hyperemia, lacrimal function tests [Schirmer I test and break up time（BUT）] and intraocular pressure（IOP）.RESULTS: Conjunctival hyperemia showed a substantial improvement in both treated groups（Pg controls. Similarly, lacrimal function tests displayed an improvement of Schirmer I test in both treated groups（Pgroup treated with 0.1% TSA（Pgnificant only in those patients treated with 0.1% TCB（Pg g.a.coma patients on therapy with TPAs, leading to a sizeable decrease of inflammation as well as both quantitative and qualitative improvement of tear film. Furthermore, differently from 0.1% TCB, it does not induce any significant IOP increase.

Nd: Yag laser iridotomy in Shaffer-Etienne g.a.e 1 and 2: angle widening in our case studies

·AIM: To obtain widening of a potentially occludable angle, in according to Kanski’s indications, through preventive Nd:Yag laser iridotomy. The observational study was performed by using gonioscopy for the selection and follow-up of 1165 treated eyes and exploiting Shaffer-Etienne gonioscopic classification as a quality/quantity test of the angle recession.·METHODS: Between September 2000 and July 2012,586 patients were selected at the Outpatients’ Ophthalmological Clinic of the Policlinico Umberto I of Rome in order to undergo Nd: Yag laser iridotomy. A goldmann type contact lens, Q-switched mode, 2-3defocus, and 7-9 m J intensity with 2-3 impulse discharges were used for surgery.·RESULTS: From as early as the first week, a whole360° angle widening were evident in the patients, thus showing the success of Nd:Yag laser iridotomy in solving relative pupil block. The angle remained narrow by 270° in 14 eyes only, despite repetitions of further treatment with laser iridotomy in a different part of the iris, twice in 10 eyes and three times in 4 eyes.·CONCLUSION: Nd:Yag laser iridotomy revealed itself as being.a.safe and effective treatment in widening those critical Shaffer-Etienne g.a.e 1 and 2 potentially occludable angles.
