Extreme Rainfall Events over the Amazon Basin Produce significant Quantities of Rain Relative to the Rainfall Climatology

Although much effort has been made to characterize and understand extreme rainfall’s causes and effects, little is known about their frequency and intensity. Moreover, knowledge about their contribution to the total rainfall climatology is still minimal, especially over the Amazon where rainfall data are very scarce. In this paper we propose to classify extreme rainfall events by type and analyze their frequency and intensity over south America with a focus on the Amazon basin. Gridded daily data from the MERGE/CPTEC product over a period of 15 years (1998–2013) was used. An adaptation of Rx5d climate index was applied to select different kinds of extreme rainfall for the purpose of quantifying their frequency and intensity as well as their contribution to the accumulated rainfall climatology. According to the results, all kinds of extreme rainfall events can be observed over the studied area. However, the quantity of rainfall produced by each type is different, and consequently their percent contributions to the total accumulated rainfall climatology also differ. For example: in the Amazon region EET-I is responsible for 15% - 40% of the total accumulated rainfall. Moreover, in the Brazilian northeast there are regions where EET-I exceeds 40% of the total rainfall. In northeast Brazil EET-II is responsible up to 30% of the total accumulated rainfall. EET-III is responsible for 5% - 15% in the Amazon basin, 25% - 45% in northeast Brazil and 10% - 45% over Roraima state. Area-mean time variation shows that the quantity of rainfall extremes over the Amazon basin was reduced during the El Nino years of 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010, while during the La Ni?a episodes of 1999, 2008 and 2011 the quantity of rainfall related to the extremes increased.

将掺渣蜡油乳化后作为催化裂化原料,在微爆作用下可显著改善原料油雾化状况,降低结焦和干气收率.研究了掺渣蜡油的乳化过程以及乳化油的物性测定,包括乳化剂的选择和乳化工艺条件的确定;不同温度下原料油乳化前后表面张力、界面张力和粘度等物性数据的变化,并分析了引起这些变化的原因.结果表明以烷基酚聚氧乙烯醚M-2为主的三元复配乳化剂具有比较良好的乳化性能;在60～90°C范围内,乳化原料油油水界面张力比原料油表面张力下降67.04%～87.77%.

α,β-amyrin, a natural triterpenoid ameliorates L-arginine-induced acute pancreatitis in rats

AIM: To study the benef icial effects of triterpene α,β-amyrin and the underlying mechanisms in an experimental pancreatitis model. METHODs: Acute pancreatitis was induced in five groups of rats (n = 8) by L-arginine (2 × 2.5 g/kg, intraperitoneal, 1 h apart) and 1 h later, they received a single oral dose of α,β-amyrin (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg),methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg) and vehicle (3% Tween 80). A saline (0.9% NaCl) treated group served as a normal control. Efficacy was assessed at 24 h by determination of serum levels of amylase, lipase and proinflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6], pancreatic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, lipid peroxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs)], nitrate/nitrite levels, and the wet weight/body weight ratio. Tissue histology and the immunoreactivity for TNF-α and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOs) were performed. REsULTs: α,β-amyrin and methylprednisolone treatments significantly (P ses in pancreatic wet weight/body weight ratio, and decreased the serum levels of amylase and lipase, and TNF-α and IL-6, as compared to the vehicle control. Also, pancreatic levels of MPO activity, TBARs, and nitrate/nitrite were signifi cantly lower. Histological f indings and TNF-α and iNOs immunostaining further confirmed the amelioration of pancreatic injury by α,β-amyrin. CONCLUsION: α,β-amyrin has the potential to combat acute pancreatitis by acting as an anti-in? ammatory and antioxidant agent.

Ca-alginate spheres behavior in presence of some solvents and water-solvent mixtures

Immobilization systems more frequently used are calcium alginate spheres. These biocatalysts have many potential applications in the immobilization of enzymes, prokaryotic cells, vegetal and animal cells, algae, organelles and mixtures of these living components. Other applications of immobilized cells imply the use of non aqueous systems. some bioconversions are carried out in the presence of solvents such as hexane acetone or acetonitrile, or mixtures water-solvents. The aim of this work was to investigate the behaviour of Ca-alginate spheres when put in contact with different solvents (water, diesel, ethanol, methanol, acetone, n-hexane, isopropyl alcohol, THF, acetonitrile, and toluene), or solvent-water mixtures (i.e., ethanol-water), regarding the resistance of the alginate spheres after days of contact. Calcium alginate particles suffered different damages, depending on the solvent they were put in contact. Water did not damaged the Ca-alginate structure with or without Ca present. On the other hand different solvents lost a proportion of volume, i.e., n-hexane (16%), methanol (19%), ethanol (19.5%), toluene (22%), diesel (34%), acetone (765), isopropyl alcohol (80%), THF and acetonitrile (total loss, total destruction). Nor the dielectric constant nor the polarity indexes were capable of explaining the difference on the volume loss or total sphere destruction, except for water-ethanol mixtures.

The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology for optimizing the geometry of the LED （light emitting diode） secondary lens. The research objective is to uniform the illumination distribution on a target plane for nonimaging application. In order to achieve this, a software that simulates ray tracing is used, in conjunction with a heuristic process for enhancing the optimized parameters that form the geometry of the LED secondary lens. spherical lenses was opted for optimization due to its lower manufacture complexity.

The inflammatory pattern during Helicobacter pylori(***)infection is changeable and *** childhood,it is possible to observe a predominantly regulatory response,evidenced by high concentrations of key cytokines for the maintenance of Treg responses such as TGF-β1 and IL-10,in addition to high expression of the transcription factor *** the other hand,there is a predominance of cytokines associated with the Th1 and Th17 responses among ***-positive *** the last few years,the participation of the Th17 response in the gastric inflammation against *** infection has been highlighted due to the high levels of TGF-β1 and IL-17 found in this infectious scenario,and growing evidence has supported a close relationship between this immune response profile and unfavorable outcomes related to the ***,this cytokine profile might play a pivotal role in the effectiveness of *** *** is evident that age is one of the main factors influencing the gastric inflammatory pattern during the infection with ***,and understanding the immune response against the bacterium can assist in the development of alternative prophylactic and therapeutic strategies against the infection as well as in the comprehension of the pathogenesis of the outcomes related to that microorganism.

This paper records the first occurrence of Epistylis sp. on the body surface of Argulus sp. parasitizing Hoplias aimara from the upper Araguari River, in the eastern Amazon region, in the north of Brazil. Of the 16 specimens of H. aimara examined, 93.7% had their pelvic, caudal and pectoral fins and tegument infested by Argulus sp. (n = 73), which in turn were infested by Epistylis sp. The specimens of Epistylis sp. from the body surface of Argulus sp. were analyzed using scanning Electron Microscopy (sEM). The present study also identified a widening of the geographic distribution of these two species of ectoparasites to the eastern Amazon region of Brazil.
