This review describes advances in understanding and forecasting tropical cyclone(TC)subseasonal variability during the past four years.A large effort by the scientiﬁc community has been in understanding the sources of predictability at subseasonal timescales beyond the well-known modulation of TC activity by the Madden-julian Oscillation(MjO).In particular,the strong modulation of TC activity over the western North Paciﬁc by the Boreal Summer Intra-Seasonal Oscillation(BSISO)has been *** has also been realized in understanding the role of tropical-extratropical interactions in improving subseasonal *** addition,several recent publications have shown that extratropical wave breaking may have a role in the genesis and development of *** of multi-model ensemble data sets such as the Subseasonal to Seasonal(S2S)and Subseasonal Experiment(SubX)have shown that the skill of S2S models in predicting the genesis of TCs varies strongly among models and regions but is often tied to their ability to simulate the MjO and its *** skill in select models has led to an increase over the past four years in the number of forecasting centers issuing subseasonal TC forecasts using various techniques(statistical,statistical-dynamical and dynamical).More extensive veriﬁcation studies have been published over the last four years,but often only for the North Atlantic and eastern North Paciﬁc.

Here we discuss recent progress in understanding tropical cyclone(TC)subseasonal variability and its *** has been a concerted effort to understand the sources of predictability at subseasonal time-scales,and this effort has continued to make progress in recent *** the Madden-julian Oscillation(MjO),other modes of variability affect TCs at these time-scales,in particular various equatorial ***,TC activity is also modulated by extratropical processes via Rossby wave *** has also been progress in the ability of models to simulate the MjO and its modulation of TC *** efforts have created multi-model ensemble datasets,which have made it possible to evaluate the forecast skill of the MjO and TCs on subseasonal time-scales in multiple forecasting *** there is positive skill in some cases,there is strong dependence on the ensemble system considered,the basin examined,and whether the storms have extratropical influences or ***,the definition of skill differs among *** centers are currently issuing subseasonal TC forecasts using various techniques(statistical,statistical-dynamical and dynamical).There is also a strong interest in the private sector for forecasts with 3-4 weeks lead time.

Out-of-core clustering of volumetric datasets

In this paper we present a novel method for dividing and clustering large volumetric scalar out-of-core datasets. This work is based on the Ordered Cluster Binary Tree (OCBT) structure created using a top-down or divisive clustering method. The OCBT structure allows fast and efficient sub volume queries to be made in combination with level of detail (LOD) queries of the tree. The initial partitioning of the large out-of-core dataset is done by using non-axis aligned planes calculated using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A hybrid OCBT structure is also proposed where an in-core cluster binary tree is combined with a large out-of-core file.

Photodynamic therapy in the treatment of intracranial gliomas:A review of current practice and considerations for future clinical directions

Invasive grade iii and IV maliguant gliomas remain difficult to treat with a typical survival time post-diagnosis hovering around 16 months with only minor extension thereof seen in the past decade,whereas some improvements have been obtained towards five-year survival rates for which completeness of resection is a *** techniques such as fluorescence guided resection(FGR)and photodynamic therapy(PDT)are promising adjuvant techniques to in-crease the tumor volume reduction *** has been used in combination with surgical resection or alternatively as standalone treat ment strategy with some sucoess in extending the median survival time of patients compared to surgery alone and the current standard of *** document reviews the outcome of past clinical trials and highlights the general shift in PDT therapeutic *** also looks at the current approaches for interstitial PDT and research options into increasing PDT's glioma treatment fficacy through exploiting both physical and biological based approaches to maximize PDT selectivity and therapeutic index,particularly in brain adjacent to tumor(BAT).Potential reasons for failing to demonstrate a significant survival advantage in prior PDT clinical trials will become evident in light of the improved understanding of glioma biology and PDT dosimetry.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE XZ TAURI SUPERSONIC ASTROPHYSICAL jET

Computational gas dynamical simulations using the WENO-LF method are applied to modeling the high Mach number astrophysical jet XZ Tauri, including the effects of radiative cooling. Mach 55 simulations of the pulsed proto-jet are presented and analyzed in terms of interacting nonlinear waves： terminal Mach disks, bow shocks, and Meshkov-Richtmyer instabilities of the leading jet contact boundary.

High–Speed electron beam curing of thick electrode for high energy density Li-ion batteries

Electron beam curing is demonstrated as a promising method for high speed,low cost and environmentally friendly battery electrode *** work reports transfer of this process to pilot scale equipment and evaluation of electrochemical performance in prototype 1.5 Ah pouch *** LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2(NMC532)composite electrodes with an areal loading of 25 mg cm^-2(~4 mAh cm^-2)are successfully cured at a line speed of 500 feet per minute at 275 *** to the NMC532 cathode processed via a conventional coating method,the electron beam cured electrodes show higher capacity fade in the first 100 cycles,but similar fade rate *** improvement strategies are proposed and *** work demonstrates that electron beam curing is a promising method for manufacturing thick battery electrodes at high speeds and low capital/operation cost.

Contemporary biomechanical theory of traumatic brain injury has its foundation in Holbourn’s thesis on shear strain and Ommaya’s primate experimentation demonstrating the role of rotation in a variety of lesions including subdural hematoma(SDH)and diffuse axonal *** human observations have since confirmed,for the most part,the early *** concerns regarding primate research,however,have prompted in vitro models,which in turn has led to challenges with respect to the correlation between in vitro observations and the clinical *** these challenges,medicolegal proceedings may call upon biomechanical engineers to reconstruct complex injury scenarios and offer opinions on the scientific plausibility of clinical disease states,such as SDH,hemorrhagic retinopathy,and cerebral edema,associated with hypothetical or proffered action sequences during the course of an unwitnessed *** is important to note,however,that in vitro models by their nature are low‑evidence quality studies that attempt to advance hypotheses but do not address cause and *** a whole,biomechanical models,as they pertain specifically to the brain and spine,are mathematically ***,endpoints of limited relevance are relied upon(e.g.,skull fracture thresholds),which predictably overestimate the in vivo risk of significant *** the increasing role of biomechanical engineering in the interpretation of fatal pediatric head trauma,a heightened awareness of the limitations warranted.

Scaling granular material with polygonal particles in discrete element modeling

Despite advancements in computational resources,the discrete element method(DEM)still requires considerable computational time to solve detailed problems,especially when it comes to the large-scale *** addition to the geometry scale of the problem,the particle shape has a dramatic effect on the computational cost of ***,many studies have been performed with simplified spherical particles or *** scaling is an approach to increase the particle size to reduce the number of particles in the *** several particle scaling methods have been introduced,there are still some disagreements regarding their applicability to certain aspects of *** this study,the effect of particle scalping on the shear behavior of granular material is *** granular particles were scanned and imported as polygonal particles in the direct shear *** effect of particle size distri-bution,particle angularity,and the amount of scalping were *** results show that particle scalping can simulate the correct shear behavior of the model with significant improvement in computational ***,the accuracy of the scalping method depends on the particle angularity and particle size range.

Homicidal Abuse of Young Children:A Historical Perspective

The past 50 years has seen a heightened awareness of abusive injury patterns and increased concern for the plight of children victimized by their *** of the young,however,has been embedded in society since the beginning of recorded ***,nature provides abundant examples of infanticide in lower animals,raising the question of whether exploitation,apathy,and violence toward children are on some level evolutionarily *** human antiquity,selective killing of females,the illegitimate,and the malformed,killing by ritualistic sacrifice or to conserve resources was carried out with *** middle ages and later saw a decline in these practices albeit *** hundred years into the industrial revolution,with harsh child labor in public view,legal remedies were sought to protect children but with little *** domestic abuse of children was not addressed until a pivotal 19^(th)-century case,in which the rights of animals were invoked to intervene on behalf of a *** the 20th century,physicians began to look closely at anatomical findings;patterns due to trauma,especially inflicted trauma,began to emerge.“Battered child syndrome”was followed by“shaken baby syndrome”,the latter prompted by the recurrent findings of subdural hematoma,retinal hemorrhages,and brain injury with the absence of impact injuries and no plausible accidental or natural disease *** the 21st century,high-quality studies and an emphasis on evidenced-based medicine substantiated the existence ofiiijury patterns resulting from homicidal ***,progress has been uneven.A case of child abuse that reached the US Supreme Court resulted in an ill-cited dissent that seems to have amplified an already toxic medicolegal environment,perhaps *** difficulties in balancing the welfare of society with that of caregivers in the aftermath of homicidal abuse will no doubt continue.
