An in vitro experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of grain type on in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVdMd) and pH using ruminal fluid and a buffer reagent. Five beef cows were used for ruminal fluid collection and ruminal fluid was pooled prior to use. The cows used for ruminal fluid collection were maintained on a forage-based diet (60:40 forage to concentrate) for 28 d prior to ruminal fluid collection. Three grain types were evaluated: 1) dry corn (89% dry matter;dRC), 2) high-moisture corn (72% dry matter;HMC) and 3) rye (89% dry matter;RYE). data were analyzed as a completely randomized design. A total of twenty-one replications of each grain type were used for statistical analysis (n = 63 tubes total). IVdMd was greater (P ≤ 0.05) by 97.1% and 46.4% for RYE compared to dRC and HMC, respectively. Additionally, IVdMd was greater (P = 0.05) by 34.6% for HMC compared to dRC. Final pH was decreased (P ≤ 0.05) for RYE by 12.3% and 2.8% for RYE compared to dRC and HMC, respectively. Also, final pH was decreased (P = 0.05) by 9.8% for HMC compared to dRC. These data indicate that corn harvest method (dry vs. high-moisture) influences IVdMd and final pH and that rye has a greater disappearance of dry matter and lower final pH than corn under in vitro conditions.

death-mediating proteases such as caspases and caspase-3 in particular, have been implicated in neurodegenerative processes, aging and Alzheimer＇s disease. However, emerging evidence suggests that in addition to their classical role in cell death, caspases play a key role in modulating synaptic function. It is remarkable that active caspases-3, which can trigger widespread damage and degeneration, aggregates in structures as delicate as synapses and persists in neurons without causing acute cell death. Here, we evaluate this dichotomy, and discuss the hypothesis that caspase-3 may be a bifurcation point in cellular signaling, able to orient the neuronal response to stress down either pathological/apoptotic pathways or towards physiological cellular remodeling. We propose that temporal, spatial and other regulators of caspase activity are key determinants of the ultimate effect of caspase-3 activation in neurons. This concept has implications for differential roles of caspase-3 activation across the lifespan. Specifically, we propose that limited caspase-3 activation is critical for synaptic function in the healthy adult brain while chronic activation is involved in degenerative processes in the aging brain.

In the Bayesian mixture modeling framework it is possible to infer the necessary number of components to model the data and therefore it is unnecessary to explicitly restrict the number of components. Nonparametric mixture models sidestep the problem of finding the ＂correct＂ number of mixture components by assuming infinitely many components. In this paper dirichlet process mixture （dPM） models are cast as infinite mixture models and inference using Markov chain Monte carlo is described. The specification of the priors on the model parameters is often guided by mathematical and practical convenience. The primary goal of this paper is to compare the choice of conjugate and non-conjugate base distributions on a particular class of dPM models which is widely used in applications, the dirichlet process Gaussian mixture model （dPGMM）. We compare computational efficiency and modeling performance of dPGMM defined using a conjugate and a conditionally conjugate base distribution. We show that better density models can result from using a wider class of priors with no or only a modest increase in computational effort.

This study presents a re-examination of historical specimens(dG136 and dG167)from the Monashee complex in the southeastern Canadian Cordillera that are critical to the current understanding of rare earth element(REE)distribution between garnet and monazite(and other accessory minerals)during ***-hundred and fifty-one new monazite petrochronology spot analyses on 29 different grains across two specimens outline detailed(re)crystallization *** element data collected from the same ablated volume,interpreted in the context of new phase equilibria modelling that includes monazite,xenotime and apatite,link ages to specific portions of the pressure-temperature(P-T)paths followed by the *** linkages are further informed by garnet Lu-Hf geochronology and xenotime *** clockwise P-T paths indicate prograde metamorphism was ongoing by ca.80 Ma in both *** structurally deeper specimen,dG136,records peak P-T conditions of~755-770℃and 8.8-10.4 kbar,interpreted to coincide with(re-)crystallization of low Y monazite at~75-70 ***-rim garnet isopleths from dG167 cross in the observed peak assemblage field at~680℃ and 9.3 *** conditions are interpreted to correspond with low Y monazite(re-)crystallisation at~65 *** specimens record decompression along their retrograde path coincident with high Y 70-55 Ma and 65-55 Ma monazite populations in dG136 and dG167,*** findings broadly agree with those initially reported~20 years ago and confirm early interpretations using trace elements in monazite as generally reliable markers of metamorphic *** phase equilibria modelling and in situ petrochronological analysis,however,provide additional insight into monazite behaviour during anatexis and the effects of potential trace element buffering by REE-bearing phases such as apatite.

Palaeolimnological studies should ideally be based upon continuous, undisturbed sediment sequences with reliable chronologies. However for some lake cores, these conditions are not met and palaeolimnologists are often faced with dating puzzles caused by sediment disturbances in the past. This study chooses Esthwaite Water from England to illustrate how to identify sedimentation discontinuities in lake cores and how chronologies can be established for imperfect cores by correlation of key sediment signatures in parallel core records and with long-term monitoring data （1945-2003）. Replicated short cores （ESTH1, ESTH7, and ESTH8） were collected and subjected to loss-on-ignition, radiometric dating （210Pb, 137Cs, and 14C）, particle size, trace metal, and fossil diatom analysis. Both a slumping and a hiatus event were detected in ESTH7 based on comparisons made between the cores and the long-term diatom data. Ordination analysis suggested that the slumped material in ESTH7 originated from sediment deposited around 1805-1880 Ad. Further, it was inferred that the hiatus resulted in a loss of sediment deposited from 1870 to 1970 Ad. Given the existence of three superior 14C dates in ESTH7, ESTH 1 and ESTH7 were temporally correlated by multiple palaeolimnological proxies for age-depth model development. High variability in sedimentation rates was evident, but good agreement across the various palaeo- limnological proxies indicated coherence in sediment processes within the coring area. differences in sedimenta- tion rates most likely resulted from the natural morphology of the lake basin. Our study suggests that caution is required in selecting suitable coring sites for palaeolimno-logical studies of small, relatively deep lakes and that proximity to steep slopes should be avoided wherever possible. Nevertheless, in some cases, comparisons between a range of contemporary and palaeolimnological records can be employed to diagnose sediment distur- bances and establish a chron

Sampling errors of the global mean sea level derived from TOPEX/Poseidon （T/P） altimetry are explored using 31/ 4a of eddy-resolving numerical model outputs for sea level. By definition, the sampling errors would not exist if data were available everywhere at all times. Four problems with increasing and progressively added complexities are examined to understand the causes of the sampling errors. The first problem （P1） explores the error incurred because T/P with turning latitudes near 66° latitudes does not cover the entire globe. The second problem （P2） examines, in addition, the spatial sampling issue because samples are only available along T/P ground tracks. The third problem （P3） adds the additional complexity that sea level at any along track location is sampled only once every 10 d versus every 3 d for the model （i.e., the temporal sampling issue）. The fourth problem （P4） incorporates the full complexity with the addition of real T/P data outages. The numerical model （Los Alamos POP model Run 11） conserves the total water volume, thus generating no global mean sea level variation. Yet when the model sea level is sampled in the four problems （with P4 using the real T/P sampling）, variations occur as manifestations of the sampling errors. The results show root-mean-squares （rms） sampling errors for P1 of 0.67 （0.75） mm for 10 d （3 d） global mean sea level, 0.78 （0.86） mm for P2, 0.79 mm for P3, and 1.07 mm for P4, whereas the amplitudes of the sampling errors can be as large as 2.0 （2.7） mm for P1, 2.1 （2.7） mm for P2, 2.2 mm for P3, and 2.5 mm for P4. The results clearly show the largest source of the sampling errors to be the lack of global coverage （i.e., P1）, which the model has actually underestimated due to its own less-than-global coverage （between latitudes about 77° latitudes）. We have extrapolated that a truly global model would show the rms sampling error to be 1.14 （1.28） mm for P1, thus implying a substantially larger sampling error for P4.
